Opinion Changes for Round 2 vs The Blues

I'd be happy enough with us just playing English, Keath and Naughton as our talls with Dunkley and Hannan chopping out in the ruck. I don't think Gardner, Schache or Cordy are worth picking because we are losing the aerial battle regardless. Dale and Williams (when he's in form) both compete reasonably well in the air for their size. Carlton are guaranteed to have the edge when it comes to talls so we might as well try to have a skill/speed advantage. Bring in Duryea, Arthur Jones etc. to replace the Spud Tall Brigade (STB). We should also establish a new rule for our tall players: if you are over 192cm tall, you need to be able to take the occasional mark, otherwise you don't play.

I reckon could Patrick Lipinski would be a good in. lol

The games I have watched this round has been all about the ability to hit targets and to be clean resulting in less turn overs . Our ability to hit targets when we go forward is a concern. Ok we have Astro for the long kick but he needs help. We need to be able hit targets on the shorter kicks. I think this a 2 way street the accuracy of the kicker and the forwards not leading to right spot. On Wednesday night we created enough opportunities but our disposal and lack of clean hands let us down big time. I expect a big focus on this at training this week and big improvement. If we do we win the game.

As we have for quite a few seasons we have gone into round 1 with an unbalanced team, partly due to injury, partly due to apparently not utilising practice matches to work on structure.

Hopefully there were some promising performances in the VFL as there were numerous players who should be under pressure including all nominated by Proffessor plus Cordy.

Still am trying to understand why not once since Bruce has been out have we at least tried Sweet as another deep marking forward swapping with English say 30/70. We tried Martin in this role who has never been able to play it.

Therefore have no idea who comes in or goes out but I sincerely hope the match committee dp have this under control or we could easily be looking at a 0 4 start to the season

That's a touch of exaggeration there

How thin must your argument be when your justification is 'he's not giving away silly free kicks anymore or really bad skill errors'.

Gardner's game still has a long way to go before he is considered an automatic selection. Let's not forget he is a tall guy who seldom takes a contested mark, and currently doesn't present a marking target/option unless we are switching play and there is no opponent in his general vicinity.

He shouldn't get games just because he is slightly bigger than Cordy, who is currently a superior football player in a number of ways. There is a reason he has played over 80 more games than Gardner despite being only 6 months his senior.

What areas is Cordy superior in your opinion

That last sentence is a really poor argument. Example: Jack Martin has played 124 games, mature age recruit Tim Kelly has played 88 games. That doesn't stop Tim Kelly from being a much better player than Jack Martin.

Marlion Pickett has played 38 games at 30 years old, doesn't mean he is a worse player currently than Shaun Atley who played 233 games of putrid football by 29.

The over the top "could be 0-4"

Not much analysis is needed to go into that. Simply won't happen
You seriously think we bring that structure and that intensity with the error riddled game we delivered at we will not be 0 and 4, enjoy your happy little bubble.

Carlton we have struggled to match up with for 4 years, Sydney beat us at home last year and a depleted Tigers team also beat us last year, so good on you for being so optimistic but a serious improvement is needed based on as recently as last year or we will actually be 0 and 4

WHAT ABOUT THE -17 METRES GAINED
WHAT ABOUT THE -17 METRES GAINED
Further on Statistics, Cordy failed to have a touch in 3 quarters of the game, 2nd quarter he had 1 kick, 2 handballs with meters gained -17, which I have never seen before, he would not get a game in any other team in the competition, he missed the first 6 games last season, which we won, he should not pay senior football again

It is not just an opinion. Cordy rates in front of Gardner in almost all statistical categories.
It is an interesting comparison, but statistics for a defender are often misleading at best.

I prefer Gardner to Cordy with quicker closing speed putting him in a position to defend more often, the primary part of a defenders role.

In saying that I really do not rate either of them and hope OBrien can continue with his tail end form at Hawthorn as our options are not really strong in this area

It's round one and you're throwing the toys out of the cot. Most teams have looked like trash.

Richmond don't even have a midfield without Prestia and it showed after quarter time

Seriously it is an opinion forum. Stating the bleeding obvious that if things don't change immediately we can be 0 and 4 with our upcoming fixture is not throwing the toys out with the cot.

It is stating we were not prepared for round 1 and need to get our act together asap or we could be in real trouble.

Would hate to actually post something really negative

1v1 defending I'd prefer Gardner too. But yeah it's not going to change a lot with one in ahead of the other.

This will never happen but I can dream:

O’Brien for Gardener
Sweet for Cordy
Marra for Hannan
AJ for JJ

Still leaves us with Schache as a swing man, three talls up front, and plenty of speed forward of the ball in VDM, Weightman and Jones.

God forbid English or Naughts goes down we still have the necessary cattle to structure up.
