Stuffed if I know. He's now contending with Dawes as well as Cloke, so is getting less opportunity, and isn't getting a consistent run in the 1's either meaning he's probably not getting a chance to settle into things.

Can't fathom why people are writing him off. Did they miss his 50 goals last year??

no ones expecting him to kick another 50 this year and never were. he is just so undisciplined though in the few games he has had this year, im not sure why eitheir. reminds me a lot of fev in that area, just plays selfish footy at times.

Is there something I'm missing for those calling for Goldsack dropped?? I thought he played better last night than his previous 2 weeks which were also very solid. Was probably equal best in defence with O'brien... And almost kicked that goal in the first on the run that was electrifyingly good!

I agree, Goldy was excellent last night.

He won't be dropped, in fact he may have gone as far to secure his spot for a few weeks after his performance last night.

I can't see any of the defenders getting dropped, Toovey was the "worst", but he has a lot of credits "in the bank", and will clearly be given the chance to atone for that first quarter on Ebert.

I wouldn't be surprised if only the players suspended are replaced this week, meaning only 2 changes.

If this happens, my changes would be;

Out: Cloke, Anthony
In: Fraser, Maxwell

If Leon is fit, I'm finding it hard to get a 3rd player dropped, maybe Lockyer, but he is holding up his end most weeks.

I wouldn't expect too many changes next week either way.

Whatever happens regarding Cloke and Jack, I just hope we don't muck around and put on another debutant against the likes of saints, cats and hawks .... we have plenty of youngsters as it is...Don't get me wrong I can't wait for Roundsy to get a game, I just believe it must not be against the big teams in the big games, experience wins almost every time so just stick to an even balance as best we can...Go Pies !! A Big Scalp awaits !!

Change for next week? a different approach to actually have a shot at winning!
Personel is the least of our worries IMO, the biggest worry is how the way they have dismantled our game plan the last few games is identical every time.

The Saints do not get scored against heavily, they grind games out ala the Italian soccer team and it all comes down to defense, in all likelihood our forwards are not going to dominate so it comes down to how we approach our forward 50 entries.

St Kilda love a long searching kick into their defensive 50, they are experts at cutting off high balls and mopping up spillages and murder teams on the rebound, we rely on turnovers in the fwd 50 for a fair amount of our scoring chances but they wont allow this because their numbers are so great in this area.

Teams like Carlton and Freo did well against them because they ran the ball right to the 50 and spotted up clever little passes because their forwards were prepared to spread the saints defenders and find either space or at least make it a one on one contest at ground level.

The Safe possesion based game we play works against most teams but fails against St Kilda because they get too many numbers back and we dont move it quickly enough to be able to counter this and also they always force us to turn it over around HF and then launch their own attack by running in waves.

I hope to god we try something a bit different because im sick of playing these guys and knowing how the game will unfold after one quarter of play.
Quite frankly if we do what we do best and they do what they do best, they win most times so its not the time to change jockeys but worry about training the horse properly to suit the race.

I think Clokey had other plans for the next 3-4 weeks, why else would you be so stupid. So with Cloke gone (4 weeks, l think he'll get) and Anthony (1 week), in's / out's -

In : Davis, Fraser, Maxwell
Out : Cloke, Anthony (Susp), Goldsack (unlucky)

If Rounds has a good game in the VFL, then could be a chance, partcularly if Davis is stll unfit.

In: Medhurst/Dick/Rounds/Davis - pick two
Out: Anthony (susp), Cloke (susp)

Give Maxy another week off... It's a shame he is captain, both Goldy and Tooves have been playing alright (better than Maxwell's form pre-injury).

I agree totally, we need more pace against the saints, If we bring in Fraser we will lose, with a clogged up forward line he will struggle as he cannot take a contested mark

The idea of dropping Anthony if not suspended is laughable. We need another tall option to help Dawes. Sure Jolly and L.Brown can rotate forward but L.Brown may be needed in defence to help combat Riewoldt and Kosi.

Fraser will probably come in and I dont like the idea of relying on him on being a KPF.

I actually agree, if Jack gets a miracle reprieve, he must play, but it ain't going to happen, JACK IS GONE.

It's now a matter of who performs at their best today at VFL level, and who is available out of Maxwell, Davis and Dick.

We will know more by about 5pm tonight.:thumbsu:

Leigh Brown would play permanent 2nd tall and Fraser and Jolly will ruck forward.
Sorry Anthony is just too terrible to keep in the side. Dumb dumb footballer

In thinking of changes for Stk, i'm also thinking positional. Does anyone think Harry O, THE BIG H, could be the most exciting outstanding, small- medium forward in the game. Depending on match ups we can cope down back with Goldy and our numbers of defensive type mids. in an ideal world...I know where i want my best players..

Not the game to test your theory... Though it would be a good experiment.

Harry O to Milne

I would have it no other way.

Maybe not this week, thinking ahead, to knock off potentially HAwthorn, Geelong and Stkilda in 3 out of 4 weeks during Spring will require some daring and innovation. Our playing list is at for the first time on 20 or 30 years dripping with these qualities.

As much as we would all like it to happen, Josh wil NOT work as a KPF, especially against a defensive unit like Stkilda. I think a smaller more mobile forward squad is needed. Leon is a certainty to come in, Medhurst also is he shows form today.

Re Jack, i cannot see him suceeding against Stkilda, suspension or not, he wont play next week.

Big game from Fraser,Caff or Rounds in the VFL could see them come in.

Cloke is gone,Anthony might get lucky. Thomas & Pendlebury nothing in theirs that is worth suspension.

Changes.

OUT:Cloke(susp),Anthony(susp)?,Goldsack,Blair/Tarks
IN: Meddars, Leon,Maxwell, Fraser

Would love to see Rounds get a game but doubt mick will bring him in this week.

I'm only the only one that thought Jack played a decent game.

Ok, beside a few rash decisions when he was kicking into the 50, he provided a contest and his second efforts were very good. With Cloke out I have faith that he could provide a real good target along with Dawes.

Out: Cloke, Goldsack or Toovey, Blair or Lockyer
In: Maxwell, Leon, Medhurst (or Rounds, or even both)

If McCarthy has a good game in the twos today he will get picked becuase he always seems to get picked for the stkillda games then dropped for the following week.

Medders having a blinder in the magoos.

Out: Anthony (susp), Cloke (susp)
In: Medhurst, Davis/Dick/Rounds - pick one

I don't think we'll need Leory in defence next week, especially if Maxwell comes in.

JA's efforts in the forwardline so far this season hasn't been good enough to warrant selection based on structure alone, prefer to see him dropped.

Second-efforts have been very poor, yet people seem to think this has been one of his redeeming qualities.

He played well against West Coast, but most did.

I'd go one step further:-

OUT: Cloke, Anthony, Toovey
IN: Maxwell, Rounds, Macaffer

Caff's ability to take a contested mark and also apply strong forward pressure would see him effectively replace Jack. Although slightly smaller, could work in our favour against Saints back line.

Maxwell for Toovey is a no-brainer

Rounds is no drop-in replacement for Cloke, but he has the pace and ferocity we'd need to take on the St Kilda back line.

Yep. We need another one paced, mid sized player who chokes in front of goal so badly he makes Cloke look like Nuts Coventry.
Toovey is there to stay. Why do people keep mentioning his name as an exclusion? Do you actually watch our team each week?

Jack has never played well against a zoned defense, his good games have only come when teams have held traditional positions. We only need 1 tall to be honest, with possibly Leigh Brown as a second option.
Think at the 'G without Trav we should play small and more hit up targets. Actually might be a good game for Swan to play half forward for more of the game if he gets the Clint Jones tag.
