Stop ****ing excluding Clarke, he top scored in our inning ffs

Clarke had the opportunity to dig in and build a decent innings when the pressure was building and wickets were falling around him (Hussey and Watson have done it plenty of times this series) before prodding at a nothing delivery and throwing his wicket away. He deserves as much blame as anybody if not more

Assuming we lose this Test:

Watson
Marsh
Khawaja
Ferguson
M. Hussey
White (c)
Paine
O'Keefe/Hauritz
Johnson
Harris
Copeland

So thats:
In - Marsh, Khawaja, Ferguson, White, Paine, O'Keefe/Hauritz, Copeland
Out: Hughes, Ponting, Clarke, Smith, Haddin, Siddle, Hilfenhaus

I'd rather O'Keefe than Hauritz because O'Keefe is the future but Hauritz's form is demanding of a spot in the XI so it'd harsh not to play him.

  1. Shane Watson
  2. Mark Cosgrove
  3. Ricky Ponting
  4. Michael Clarke
  5. Mike Hussey
  6. Usman Khawaja
  7. Brad Haddin
  8. Nathan Hauritz
  9. Ryan Harris
  10. Trent Copeland
  11. Doug Bollinger

Looks alright but there's no way they'd drop Johnson for Dougy again.

I see no reason why top-scoring by getting 20 when the total was 98 means you are above criticism. Clarke is having a shocker, there is not two ways about it and his average for the year is now below 40. In other words, he is doing no better than Punter. Or North. Or Huss before he redonned his Superman outfit for the Ashes. Our middle order mostly doesn't work and hasn't for a long time and now that Katich is out, neither does the opening pair.

Sydney:
Katich (farewell game)
Cosgrove
Ponting (farewell game)
Hussey
Clarke (dropped if he fails again)
Watson
Haddin
Johnson
O'Keefe
Harris
Copeland
Hilfenhaus 12th man

Next Series:
Cosgrove
Marsh
Khawaja
White (c)
Hussey
Watson (vc)
Haddin
Johnson
O'Keefe
Harris
Copeland

Shane Watson
Shaun Marsh
Mark Cosgrove
Usman Khawaja
Michael Hussey*
David Hussey
Brad Haddin+
Nathan Hauritz
Ryan Harris
Trent Copeland
Hilfenhaus/Johnson

OUT: Hughes, Ponting, Clarke, Smith, Johnson/Hilfenhaus & Siddle
IN: Marsh, Cosgrove, Khawaja, Hussey, Hauritz & Copeland

Hauritz has done more than enough to earn his spot back. I also hope Johnson doesn't think one good performance every six months keeps him in the side. Hilfenhaus keeps his spot over Mitch if he can't redeem himself after yesterday's efforts. Hussey (Dave) can provide some overs too.

As far as I'm concerned, Ponting has cooked it, both as a batsman and a captain. Give him the Sydney test and be done with it; as brilliant as the man's been for his country, it seems he's been on a downward spiral for the last 18 months. Let's not delay the development of a younger player any longer.

Hughes has one good series in Sth Africa, next thing he's taken Clarke's mantle as the golden boy of Australian cricket. This kid's got to learn he can't slash at everything outside off stump and expect to score a ton everytime. Shaun Marsh actually has a defensive game and has domestic form this season; bring him in!

And while we're on Clarke, I think it's time the selectors gave him a little reminder that the test captaincy, let alone his spot in the national side, is an honour he must earn, and isn't something given away lightly. Seemed to work for Johnson (for a test anyway).

Siddle; top bloke by all reports, but an ineffective fast bowler; I'm still scratching my head at that hat-trick in Brisbane. Time to give Copeland the nod, especially at his home ground.

Watson
Cosgrove (very unlikely, but aside from Wes Robinson / Shaun Marsh / promote Hussey up the order there's no-one else - plus WA are playing poorly at the moment so neither player's selection could be justified)
Ponting (c) (fair well game)
M Hussey
Khawaja
Haddin (move up to 6)
Hauritz
Johnson
Butterworth
Harris
Siddle / Hilfenhaus

In: Cosgrove, Khawaja, Hauritz, Butterworth
Out: Clarke, Hughes, Smith, Siddle/Hilfenhaus

I would be happy with that side. Cue 2/3 of the 4 players I dropped to bat reasonably in the 2nd innings and hold their spot.

Throw most of the team out and start preparing for the future...

Maddinson
Hill
Khawaja
Watson
Clarke (unfortunately M.Marsh is injured)
White
Paine
Smith
Cameron
Harris
Hogan

There are good quality young quicks but it's pointless to throw them in whilst injury prone.

Don't like the calls for Haddin to bat at 6. Gilchrist didn't even do that, and he was a better batsman. We need to pick the top 6 batsmen, and not have some part time spinner bat at 6. I don't care who comes in, but batting North/Smith at 6 means we have too few batsmen, yet paradoxically are still a (spin) bowler short.

Pick 6 batsmen, keeper at 7, one spinner, and 3 quicks.

When we go into the dead rubber at Sydney, that should be the catalyst for change and to pick a team for the future.

If the game is a dead rubber:

Watson
Katich (Marsh if Katich is not fit. Tough love with Hughes from here, no mixed messages)
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Khawaja
Haddin
Smith
Johnson
Harris
Siddle

Katich and Ponting have their farewell tests. It makes sense to persevere with Smith. Clarke playing for his spot in Bangladesh. Khawaja auditioning for the #3 position.

If the series is still alive:

Watson
Katich
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Khawaja
Haddin
Johnson
Warne (if not....Hauritz..)
Harris
Siddle

1. Watson
2. Cosgrove
3. Ponting (c)
4. Mike Hussey
5. Clarke
6. Smith
7. Haddin (wk)
8. Johnson
9. Harris
10. Siddle
11. Hilfenhaus

In: Cosgrove
Out: Hughes

Ponting's last test - Khawaja comes in at three to take over Ponting in the next series. Johnson's last chance. The fat man is the in-form opener in Sheffield Shield cricket. Clarke is not a test no. 4, so needs to go back to no. 5 where he has made the majority of his test runs.

I would like to strengthen the batting, but it's hard to do that whilst not weakening the bowling, unless we drop Smith and replace him with a proper no. 6 batsman.
