Shultz, Sturt (inj), Matera/Colyer
Blakely, Serong, Hill

I thought we named too many short small forwards vs Port - it seemed like we had no real confidence in just 2 doing the job, so we picked 3. Bolster the midfield and give Walters (who is the best small forward) more time there. Mundy starts as the 3rd tall. Shultz tries hard, more that anything else, his transition play when he went up the ground was poor.
You make some great points.

Mundy while wasn’t quick before, he seem to lose a step. As a third tall forward seems like a better spot for him.

Walters to the forward line makes sense to me, if no small forward is up to it.

Yep I can remember WANFL footy back in the 1970s with 25 minute quarters than would run to 35 minutes with time on.

But today, with shorter quarters and longer breaks, there is even more need prioritise talent over sheer physical fitness.
Again.... shows how much Aussie rules has changed in the last 30-40 or so years.

Yep, I realise that King and Luksious are key talls (although Luksious is playing the 3rd tall defender these days).

But nonetheless they are talented footballers who have been given jobs based on their ability to impact the game in spite of their lack of their seniority .

Ultimately its not about "playing youth" or "playing experience" is about playing guys who can actually achieve some on-field impact. That has less to do with having a tank than being able to football. If we have 22 guys on our list who can football better than Colyer than they should play ahead of him, regardless of how many pre-seasons they have done.
I love it how everyone is bagging out coyler.

Everyone bags out Ross Lyon not playing enough youth in our 2012-15 finals years. He cant get all the Blame. I hated the sub rule era under that 2012-15 period. Because you can sub someone out in the 3rd or 4th quarter then get an injury and be down to 2 fit players on the bench.

Hence now we dont have that anymore.

If this season was 20 games. I would of Rotated 1 sub spot for a rookie. Let 4 rookies play 5 games each or let 5 rookies play for 4 games each, give them a taste of senoir dockers footy while tryng to build up their fitness.

Saying that Happy young and Sam sturt got a debut game already.

Pardon the intrusion but I'm shocked you guys are all writing off Colyer. Must say apart from the big 2 he was the most dangerous player you had on the field. We had no answer for his pace and hustle everytime he appeared near the ball he found a way to split or win the contest. I didn't know much about him at all but thought he was one you'd persist with for sure. Sounds like it's a future plan thing though so fair enough.

Meanwhile given we're teaming up for a scratch match, how many players did you guys take to GC. We have got in reserve...

FF: Georgiadies, Williams
HF: Bergman,
C: Farrell, Mayes, Sutcliffe
HB: Watts,
FB: Lienert

R: Ladhams , Mead

One of those from Center-forward will replace Duursma. So we only have 9 players for a.scratch match. Will be fascinating to see how the player sharing works. Im presuming you guys only have similar numbers with Sturt probably out injured?

In and outs but with some Structural chances.

In: Blakely - goes to Rowell as a tagger
Out: Matera - Walters, Mundy and Fyfe to play more forward

Out: Schultz
In: Serong - to play high forward

Out: Bewley
In: Hill to play part midfield and back

As long as you guys share that Sutcliffe bloke with us we ll be happy.
Reckon he’d go good in the purple

I don’t hate Colyer. I just don’t think his superior fitness justifies his getting a game. All his speed and running power aren’t helping the team if he is not really impacting the play. He is no orphan though: Matera, Schultz and Brayshaw have all had a pretty lacklustre start to the season.

Kids don’t deserve a game because they are young. Older players don’t deserve a game because they are fit.

Watching the game I thought it was quite noticeable that Lobb was getting battered around in the ruck duels. Considering that Lobb is more of a "leaping" ruck I feel that it's imperative that Meek plays as well as Lobb. I really don't know quite what Meek can offer us but at least he will bring some physicality to the competition and save Lobb from spending whatever may be left of this season being sore/injured a lot.
Lobb of course to stay in the side as a ruck/forward.
If Meek was playing against Port, I would have used Lobb in a defensive role as Peg suggests.

same. I think Freo have seen enough of blokes like Pearced, Langdon and Colyer streaming down a wing only to see the ball go anywhere but the outstretched arms or chest of a leading forward. We know what we are missing because we've seen what the Hill brothers can do. We will never use our tall forwards effectively while we continue forward with wingers who can't consistently hit a target while running at speed. Aish, Shill, Acres?, Wilson, Young, Monaro? or GTFO.

I like this bit. Got to shut down Rowell. And if not him, then perhaps Banfield or Brayshaw can tag him.

it looked like Brayshaw had the job on Boak early on the weekend, didn’t work out so well for us unfortunately.

A tagging job for Blakely might be good idea because he hasn't had any match simulation for a while. Sturt and Wilson that came in both seemed to have difficulties adjusting to the tempo after being out of match practice.

It is going to be difficult to make more than 2-3 changes given there was no game for the players who missed and no contact training this week.

Why wouldn't we just use Banfield? He was rated very highly in the tagging role last year and is built like a brick outhouse.
I wouldn't bring Banfield in to tag but would advocate if he was playing.

Also, Ross was asked about Banfield's tagging at some point and it was pretty clear he didn't rate him as highly as most of us and the media did.

Most of us?
There's a noisy minority that rate Banfield
Most of us think he's meh or worse

I rated him as a tagger when that was his only role, but I think that's about where it begins and end for him. If we are going to "waste" a player tagging I'd rather a limited player like him than a Brayshaw / Tucker.

B: Luke Ryan, Griffin Logue, Ethan Hughes

HB: Nathan Wilson, Brennan Cox, Hayden Young

C: James Aish, Nat Fyfe, Stephen Hill

HF: Cameron McCarthy, Jesse Hogan, Michael Walters

FF: Caleb Serong, Matt Taberner, Brandon Matera

FOLL: Rory Lobb, Darcy Tucker, Adam Cerra

INT: Andrew Brayshaw, David Mundy, Blake Acres, Reece Conca

EMER:
Connor Blakely, Brett Bewley, Bailey Banfield, Travis Coyler

Out: Brett Bewley (omit), Travis Coyler (omit), Lachie Schultz (omit), Sam Sturt (ankle)

In: Stephen Hill, Caleb Serong, Cameron McCarthy, Blake Acres (Blakely if he doesn't come up)

With just two on the bench, and only one umpire to abuse (and even that lone one would more often than not be more effective than the 4 numpties we have officiating the game each week now).
