Preview Changes/Preview, (post #449) Port Adelaide

My reserved seat at Marvel this year is apparently next to the Collingwood cheer squad, so I'm not too sure what to expect in this game. Does profanity and half-chewed food still spill from the mouths of its members in equal measure, like the olden days?

Anyway, looking forward to this one. As PicaBoo pointed out in another thread, this should be the first game in which WHE, Elliott and Stephenson play in the same team. I'm a bit excited by that. Shame that Robbie Gray won't be around, because I do enjoy watching him work, but I'm relieved that Robbie Gray won't be around...

Pies by 28 points.

Match preview: Collingwood v Port Adelaide

The teams are split 15 wins apiece, but Port Adelaide has never beaten Collingwood at Marvel Stadium

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Friday May 3, 7.50pm AEST

Last time they met: MCG, round 22, 2018: Collingwood 17.13 (115) defeated Port Adelaide 10.4 (64)
The Magpies cemented their first finals berth in four years while the Power slipped outside the eight and ultimately missed the finals. After leading by just four points midway through the third term, the Pies piled on 8.5 to 1.0 to break a four-game losing streak against Port.

What it means for Collingwood: In the first of just three appearances at Marvel Stadium this season, the Pies will fancy their chances of posting their fourth successive win in a period in which they could build serious momentum.

What it means for Port Adelaide: On a fast track under the roof, Ken Hinkley's boys have a golden opportunity to strengthen their credentials against one of the flag favourites.

How Collingwood wins: Jamie Elliott's return will allow the Pies to assemble their full complement of forwards for the first time and possibly enable superstar Jordan De Goey to spend more time in the midfield, where his explosiveness could be critical.

How Port Adelaide wins: The Power have unleashed some exciting speedsters – among them the supremely talented Connor Rozee and fellow NAB AFL Rising Star nominee Xavier Duursma – who have the ability to unsettle the Magpies' team defence.

The stat: The Power have never beaten Collingwood at Marvel Stadium, losing their previous four games at the venue to the Pies by an average of 43 points. The teams haven't met there since 2012.

The match-up: Brodie Grundy v Scott Lycett and Paddy Ryder
It all starts at the source, and Power pair Lycett (ranked No.94 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) and Ryder (No.22) will look to nullify the AFL's premier ruckman Grundy (No.4), just as Lycett and Nathan Vardy did in West Coast's Grand Final triumph seven months ago.

It’s a big week for: Tom Rockliff
The prolific onballer amassed 43 touches in Brisbane's win over the Pies at the MCG in round 21, 2014, but in his two games against them since then, both at the MCG, he has managed just 18 (after being injured in the third quarter in his first game as Lions' captain in round one, 2015) and 17 in Port's round 22 loss last year.
Big call: Port comes agonisingly close to toppling both 2018 Grand Finalists

Some Stats:
Question mark? Will Cox play? Will Elliot and Aish be included? Who will be the outs?

Teams to be posted Thursday

Prediction: Magpies by 10 points (From AFL Site and their prediction)

Mine? Pies by 34 Points

I'm looking forward to a good game against an in form team who have given us plenty of grief in recent years. It will be a tough test for us. I think Gray, Dixon and Jonas out will really help us as will the home ground advantage

Some match ups i'm keen to watch include the Grundy vs Lycett rematch. I reckon Grundy will be fired up for this. Also reckon Moore on Westhoff will be a big one. Westhoff very underated and a very good footballer. A big challenge for Moore but one I reckon he is good for.

Their midfield has been really strong with Boak, Rockliff and Wines. But I also reckon the size and depth offered by Powell-Pepper and Burton helps them. It's shown in their clearance and inside 50 numbers which are really strong. A big test for our midfield who I reckon will be up for the fight.

I love it that we have a proper preview thread this week. I like the changes thread but it's not quite the same. Great effort Maggie5! I'm selfishly hoping this becomes a weekly thing.

Thanks Quicky, happy to share this with you as might need some help and ideas.

Port have been brilliant this year, but if we wanna be considered supposed premiership favs, we should take care of them minus Dixon, Gray and Jonas, arguably 3 of their best 5 players.

Will be good to see how we respond to this kind of expectation. Hoping for a much improved effort in the contest and for us to even up the clearances.

Port will come with a similar gameplan as they did in R1 against the Dees - bully the ruck. Grundy needs to keep a cool head but remain strong, and we need our mids to actually stick up for Grundy if he gets knocked about unlike what happened with Gawn.

Having the main session two days out from match day in a long week is very odd!
It's the way they schedule it. Usually monday is a light session, and then 2 days from a game being the main session. I'm planning on going down in the morning. Unless those thursday games where I would think they would train once being a short week.

Hopefully we can back the big fella in for another 20 & 30.

Agree but we all still expected WHE to have a run or two in the VFL before senior selection.
But WHE didn't have a foot injury that has forced him to sit out 9 months. I think they are being cautious with Wells given the serious of his injury last year, plus his age and history. They are thinking of the long term of this season rather than the short term

They had Reid playing relief ruck in the VFL. If he comes in I expect he’ll do the same in the AFL.
I'd probably go with Moore or Roughhead to do the relief rucking as I think they'd do the job significantly better. I know it's unconventional to use a defender as it is felt that it disrupts the defensive unit, but they seem to cope fine when one of them takes a spell on the bench, which is just as disruptive.

Great preview. The midfield battle will be huge. We have the contested bodies but Collingwood have the class to hit targets and so much depth. Jonas big out as we have a very inexperienced backline. Dougal on Cox but the DeGoey match up so difficult, perhaps Clurey. Rozee, Butters and Duursma have been fantastic this year but you going to expect inconsistent games. But the 3 don't flinch at hitting a contest hard. Biggest unknown are match ups to our fwd line. No Dixon or Gray. Goals each week coming from different sources - Hoff 5 one week, Rozee 5, S Gray 4 etc. Hope it's a cracker game as it has all the hallmarks to be just that! A real opportunity to get a true gauge on where we are in 2019. Wish I could be at game.

It would be more disruptive. They'd go from spending ~10% out of defence to ~20-25%. Also Roughead would get killed in there. Moore is probably more important to keep in defence. I just really hope Cox gets up.
