Really like Hammer but not convinced he's done enough form wise to come into the side. 13 disposals in a side that controlled the game wasn't the impact he could have had. I though he had a solid game against Sturt but still behind Garner in terms of form.
Broady would have to come out, surely couldn't drop Bonner after his performance or he could go full Ken and drop a forward for a defender.

Agree. I'm.with you. Hartlett was average. Garner should never have been dropped and has continued his excellent form despite this.

Who is up for a good Thursday melt on selections?
View attachment 691316

I can understand the cautious approach with Dixon but there's no reason Wines shouldn't be gearing up for the Freo game. I will be melting this evening.

My preference would be for both Wines and Dixon to play AFL this weekend. I bet if the game wasn't in Perth, they probably would be playing AFL.

You want him to return from an ankle injury on a ground that has regularly been causing a host of lower leg issues for players?

If it wasn't in Perth I'd agree with you, but we can't have him or dixon return on that ground

It's been raining non stop the last 6 days in Perth, over 100 mm of rain already for June. Surely the ground has been softened up.

I will be thrilled if they are both out. Nothing against the players I love them both.

It will signal that we are finally putting some faith in our depth.

That we are going to select fit and in form playere regardless of their names and make every player fight for their spot.

If Garner holds out Hammer and Drew holds out Wines all of a sudden our depth and younger guys are going to be champing at the bit knowing places are available and they have an even chance to win them and all our senior players will be on notice.

This is what winning clubs do.

I agree with this philosophy in principle, I just don't think it has been adopted by our coaches at all. We're far more likely to persist with Broadbent and Hammer in our team, than select Garner over them based on merit. With this in mind, I would view holding Dixon and Wines back less as being due to our depth keeping them out and more to do our selectors leaving far too much money in the SANFL.

I think we will play a good game against Freo ..
Am watching the replay there against the Eagles .. Can't help myself lol loved that game ..

I can't see that happening either. The good thing with Dixon being out is we have had to experiment and try players up there, it hasn't always worked but we probably have learnt a few things. Ken will go back to what Ken knows as soon as he can - and I bet for the same result.

apparently the ground drains too well

Both Broady and Hammer in the team didn’t work too well last time, I hope it’s either/ or, even though I like Broady.

Incidentally, in a classic "only Ports" set of stats, we find it much harder to beat Freo in Perth than WCE.

We've lost our last 8 H&A games against Freo in Perth dating back 11 years.

In the same time period we've won 4 from 6 against the Eagles.

🤷‍♂️

If it’s Hammer in and Broady out, I’m cool with that.
The team is settled and for some spooky reason I feel surprisingly confident of a win!!
As I said in a previous post if there is a win in Perth and the “stars” do alright for the Maggie’s or even better than alright I don’t envy the selector’s job next week
But it’s all supposition at the moment!!

its a bad move bringing hartlett in, the justifiaction for it seems to be his name is 'Hartlett' and thats about it. Even at his best Hartlett is a only a top 15 player in our squad and there has been no evidence of form to suggest he should come in. Id be happy to say Motlop out and Hartlett in but in all seriousness Motlop has most probably performed better than Hartlett at the lower levels?

The idea might be to put Houston more on the ball which im ok with

The moment the more experienced players are fit/ready they seem to come in.

Broady is unlikely to be replaced by Hartlett.

I cant wait for us to have all our most experienced players out there, even if it's at the detriment of the team...

I think that at the moment we’ve got a delicate balance between fast vs slow, and good vs bad ball use.

We can’t afford to get any slower or any worse with ball use without it having an adverse effect on overall performance.

One of the reasons that we look a whole lot better this season than most of us thought we would is that Rozee, Duursma & Butters (as well as the improvement from Amon) have added both pace and smart ball use,

Last game we pushed this even further by having both Houston and Robbie as mids. Our midfield gets slower and less efficient if we move one or both of them out of midfield for Rocky and Wines.

The problem is that we’ve got a full store of big slow mids with iffy disposal - Boak, Wines, Rocky, SPP, Ebo, even Westy - plus two slow small defenders in Hammer & Broady, plus two tall forwards and two rucks. If we play any more than 4 (or maybe even 3) of our buffalo mids, we become Melbourne.

I think we are positioned to make the finals, however it doesn't look as if we are positioned to give the premiership a shake.

Given that it would be good if we made the finals whilst getting games into our younger KPFs.
IMO that is all that it would take to make most if not nearly all supporters happy with the direction the club has taken.

Happy to make the finals without looking like a serious contender? Yeah, nah, kind of.

Happy to make the finals without looking like a serious contender whilst looking at the long term? Shit yeah.
