24 hours after the game and I'm still shitty that Matty Campbell on the outer wing burst clear and kicked the ball straight to Fletcher in the last minute or two of the match.

Azza did great to make a contest but with a bit of composure Matty could have kicked the ball straight to Azza for a shot at goal.

Sooner or later glaring skill errors when not under much pressure have to be punished or I fear we will never improve.

So for me it's out: Tarrant, Campbell.
Some people have short memories.
Yes that kick wasn't his best, but what about his brilliant pass to LT in the third quarter that sent Lindsay leading and marking towards the top of the goal square resulting in a confidence-boosting goal.
For the most part, Campbell provided good linkage during his brief time on the ground. Was definitely not our worst on the night. Should keep his spot.

So we're going to be looking at our 3rd straight year of "apprenticeships"? I can't have that. Milkys marking and kicking looks to have improved, he has been good all pre season and he needs to be rewarded if the opportunity arises.

If we are picking key forwards on the basis of their ability to swing in to the backline to cover for a lack of height overlooked at the selection table, then something very, very wrong is going on.

I want forwards picked on the basis that they can give us something forward. If we need height in defence, then we should be bloody well picking a tall defender.

My comments are based for matching Essendon:-

their set up was to have Fletcher on Taz, and then have him peel off taz to go 3rd man in a marking contest(petrie).

If you read what i stated , i do mention to have Taz in the team to focus being what he is ......a forward. But he has to do it whilst Petrie is there, not when petrie retires. I like milky hes honest, hard working etc but what he brings to the table (physical presence, football nous/abilty) is covered by Edwards. Ben Warren's limit from goals is at 45 mtrs not what you want for forward trying to be a leading forward dragging out their respective attacking 3rd tall. So I agree with you said regarding forwards being picked as a forward. But we were light on tall backmen going into this game and the only available one wasnt picked (keys)and our only available "swingman" wasnt either(pedo).

Accepting a 50/50 pass mark will guarantee us another 9th place finish.

What was wrong with expecting him to kick the ball to Azza's advantage and possibly win the game?

really don't know what we should do in this instance, was a deplorable game that we lost by only 3. A side of me thinks that we should make no change this week although it's not winning out.

A thought:

Out: Thomas

not specifically because of his yips, but for team balance. When we have H resting forward we need a dangerous crumber (Thomas too much like a leading forward IMO) and i think a Campbell would fill that role better.

Drop one of Mullett, Anthony or Macmillan and Taz will be out injured.

Bring in Pedo to cover for Taz and a tall full back in Delaney so that we can maintain some semblance of a structure that doesn't require one of our rucks to play KPD. Pedro can also play like a flanker so when we push H forward he can become a high half forward.

Out: Anthony - Tarrant (inj)
In: L. Delaney - Pedersen

B: McMahon - L. Delaney - Firrito
HB: Atley - S. Thompson - Wright
C: Wells - Swallow - Bastinac
HF: Harper - Pedersen - Adams
F: Thomas - Petrie - Edwards
R: Goldy - Cunnington - Harvey
Int: McIntosh - Campbell - Mullett
Sub: Macmillan

This could possible be a bit tall, so unless we can find a way for H and Goldy to work together I don't expect we will see them in the same team for too much longer. Goldy is really struggling for form at the minute but could just need a proper run in the guts for an extended period.

VFL is where you need to develop, once you stick the jumper on we should expect some minimum standards.

Guys who didn't do enough:
Cunnington
Bastinac
Macmillan
Campbell
McIntosh/Goldstein
Anthony
Mullett
Tarrant

You can't have 9 of 22 being sub-par, and i could have probably found another 5 or 6 who reached the lofty height of passable or average performance.

Our best 3 where Adams, Wells and Harper. They were creative, effective with the ball and they did something.

Those calling for spud's head based on that performance i don't understand. I am probably ahead of the queue questioning his longevity but he would be in the bottom quartile of players I would drop based on the game last week.

Too many of our mids lack any real hurt factor and aren't containing their direct opponents, you either have to inflict hurt or stop your opponent, we aren't doing much of either.

However, we only lost by a small margin, we just need a lift across the board with some four quarter efforts but if THIS is our style of play the only one that needs dropping is the midfield coach because we have no system whatesoever. Either they get the squad playing with some purpose or they should be replaced. We look like a headless chook for more of the game than not.

We need to rely less on individual efforts from Petrie, Harvey, Wells, etc and rely on generating more goals from efficient field play, good set plays. This bombing shit was obsolete 10 years ago and isn't coming back into fashion.

So 18 touches, 7 score involvements, 5 shots at goal, 6 inside 50s and his defensive pressure is going to be replaced by who exactly?

Thomas played higher up at half forward late last year and in 2 or the last 3 games got about 20 touches, 10 inside 50s and 4 or 5 shots at goal.

Yes Thomas can really butcher it but there is not too many smalls in the AFL that can produce what he does.

He did exactly what his role requires him to do, which is link midfield and deep forward. If only most of his team mates could be relied to play their roles as effectively.

Unless the balance you are going for is similar to mine after an all night bender then I think this is a horrible idea.

The cunnington bashing is absolute unadulterated crap! My word there will be many people in this thread made to look fools come seasons end! This thread is always a laugh though.

Out- Taz (inj) Anthony (pea heart)

In - Black (let him feast on the young giants defence) Cruize (excellent at the stoppages)

The only bloke from Werribbe that should get near the seniors this week would be Warren.

Sounds like NB weren't alot better which is disappointing. The brothers Delaney were mentioned as being ok.

I'd go with..

Out Tarrant inj Wright susp
in L Delaney Warren

I wish this was the case but the sad fact is that Cunnington is going to be a mediocore player at best. Not saying he was woeful on the weekend, but he just isn't the player we were hoping for.

Thats what they said about Swallow, anything could happen.

I have a few contenders but this is the worst post of the year thus far.

This is seriously igby goes down material, not big lebowski.

Cunnington = least of our concerns.

As for the changes.

I dont think he should be written off yet (and I hope he improves dramatically as much as any Roos supporter!), but its time to start showing some talent.

The previous poster was right about questioning where he will end up. When Harper/Atley already look far better players, it says everything about Cunnignton's development, or lack of.

Needs to be much fitter, stronger, skilful and read the game better (without wanting to be too harsh on him, as being a high draft pick is an unfair curse on many players......).

I dont think he should be in the senior list until he deserves a game - and he hasn't for mine at any stage since he was drafted to the club.

Why?

The guy has not shown that he can impact on games.

He constantly gets caught holding the ball.

Please explain how you KNOW he will be elite and not just mediocore. I find your blind optimism a little silly.

It's sort of like how people all pre season were telling me Tarrant would make and that he was the answer to our prayers despite having never shown anything.

But i digress. Arjen, please tell me why questioning whether Cunnington will ever be better than average is the worst post of the year, given what he has shown to date.
