Coburg's Willie Wheeler wins the ANZAC medal for his best afield performance today.

Why didn't we give this guy a shot again?

i thought arnot had a impressive 4qtr game. few more games of getting used to the pace and should get a senior game

@RichardEnglish2 @VFLnews @CoburgFC good game from gus(24 disposals), a.maric (32), masters, mcguane also providing good options

the fact thats he's something like 165cm and<70kg might have something to do with it, maric has more chance of making it, that said wheeler would have been a more inspired choice than a couple of irishmen that went off like prawns in the sun

Don't agree Bo , Wheeler is a midfielder who wins his own ball , can go forward and hasn't yet had the advantage of being a full time footballer . The choice between these two is a no brainer .

Griffiths and Webberley only played the first half
First half was really scrappy due to the cross wind but the second half was much better.
Thought our best were Graham, Wheeler, Post (in the first half was very good) Maric (but some of his disposal was ordinary) Arnott (love his defensive game).
Wright and Darrou improving nicely. Actually their disposal caught my eye...alot better than last I saw...and defensively sound. Darrou wasn't afraid to use his strength off the ball (which I loved). Thought Graham was outstanding (pretty unlucky I thought not to get BOG). He was dominant in the ruck, chased well, disposal was sound and marked nearly everything that came his way.
But just my opinion

Wheeler is 176cm and 75kg
Maric is 176cm and 77kg.

If you think Maric has more chance of making it than Wheeler, then height and weight won't be the factor.

Nahas is 176cm and 70kg, by the way.

Would it be a long shot to suggest Arnot is coming along well and could pass someone like Hellbig if he continues or is there a clear gap between those 2. I ask because it sounds like he's coming on well, or is he progressing at the pace you would expect a first year player??

Try 176cm and 75kg. He wins his own ball, uses it very well and constantly outshines our taller, heavier AFL listed players

How old are carnell and wheeler?? Is there still a chance the RFC could give them a go next year ?? They seem to be consistently in the best performers both this year and last (Wheeler). Anyone ??

Wheeler is 19. Might have only just turned 20.
Carnell is 25, so probably too old by now, but given that clubs are not shying away from drafting mature age players, you never know.

I was at the game today with my son and daughter. Too bad this ground is in the location it is. Beautiful surface and really good facilities. That wind just roars in from the West though so playing conditions are a bit tough. Bit of a hike from Bentleigh too.

The Richmond brains trust was there. Hardwick, Lade, Leppitch, Daly, Cameron. Quite a few players as well. Grigg, Deledio, Martin, Elton, Riewoldt, Edwards and one or two others. Good to see some of the top liners there supporting the Reserves. Skinny jeans are obviously the standard issue. Elton had a bandaged ankle.

I left with about 10 minutes to go when Coburg looked like they had it in the bag. The kids were getting a bit scratchy as well

Overall, I think the team played reasonably well. Like the senior side they fall down across half forward as well. Really miss that lead up half forward (Nathan Brown prototype). In terms of specific players

Arnott - got a good sense of this guy's leadership on field. Even at this stage of his career he is taking control at stoppages. And gee he is a unit, clean hands and pretty good by foot. Similar type of player to Ben Cousins. Not overly blessed with pace but hard at it and will win the contested ball. Selection in the firsts can be too far away.

Webberly
- he just runs all day and gets to positions to create space. He would often be on the end of that kick out of defence, spreads well and is pretty good by foot. Didn't play the whole game. I think he would be worthwhile persisting with - you can see when they drafted him and Nason, they were looking for 2 outside players, and Webberly obviously won. Looks a reasonable size as well. Probably just needs to add goal kicking to his repertoire.

A Maric - if this go could only take his VFL form to AFL level we would have a great player on our hands. Just so clean by foot and hand, creative and a hard runner. Would have a lot of score involvements, brings others into the game. I suppose it will be up to him if he makes it at AFL level.

Piva Wright - Good rookie selection. Plays the Matt Dea type of role, good solid rebounding defender, didn't miss too many targets and doesn't get thrown around. Worth persisting with. If he could get a bigger tank could probably play midfield.

Griffiths - uses the ball really well. Took some nice marks and kept pretty close to his man. Like Webberly finished the game early. Looks like they are grooming him for CHB, not a bad option. Would have the speed and size to go with someone like Cloke or Josh Kennedy. Just hope he can stay fit.

Post - is an interesting one. Did some nice things but can also get caught it with a bit. Generally good by foot and hand, but can make some howlers. With other developing talls on the list (Griffiths, Astbury et al) he may struggle come list review time at the end of the year.

Dericx - Took some very good contested marks in the forward line. Leads well and creates a contest. On a tough day for tall marking forwards, he did quite well. Think he kicked a couple, at least one goal.

Brown - liked his game today. I thought he got first hand to the ball a lot in the ruck. Seemed to have developed a better jump at the centre bounces. Reasonably effective around the ground and took some nice marks.

Graham
- in the same boat as Brown, however, let himself down with a couple of missed targets by foot and hand. Got tackled to the ground a couple of times, which I can't work out because he is a unit.

Connors - didn't play the whole game so obviously he is still building match conditioning. If this guy could only extract that digit from his bottom he could play that mid sized half-forward role we so desperately need in the seniors. Took a nice contested mark on the lead in the 1st quarter. Presented well.

McGuane - Took some nice contested marks playing forward. Kicked a couple of really good goals in blowy conditions. Still makes mistakes (and all players make mistakes) but at crucial times. Competes well, he is a good honest player.

The other Coburg players, Carnell, Wheeler, Maric etc all seemed quite good today. The game plan seems to be working. I remember going to a game a couple of years ago at Coburg and it was just a schmozzle. Today, you could at least tell they had a plan - Adam Potter "has the players", I heard his 3/4 time address and they want to play for him - obviously, they won today and are playing better than they did two years ago.

Sorry to disappoint those who just to bag the shit out of players week in, week out. I tend to look for the team effort and adherance to the plan. One particularly pleasing moment was in the last quarter, and Coburg had just kicked a point. The zone was still in place. That's impressive because it is usually in the last quarter structures fall away.

Any questions fire away.

The only disappointment was running out of hot dogs by 1/4 time. These places could make so much more money if they were just a bit more organised.

Have I missed something and was Dan Connors injured during the pre-season?
Why the **** cant he play 4 quarters of football at round 6 in the VFL?

Thanks tt for a balanced report, a pleasant change from the usual drivel we read on vfl games:rolleyes:

I'm a bit surprised at Wheeler being that young. I checked the Coburg site and it did'nt have birthdates etc. From all the positives I heard about Wheeler last year the extra year at Coburg won't do his chances any harm at all & it sounds like he's playing with real purpose Cheers tugga :thumbsu:
