What do you think teams done pre pies screwing the pooch trade year?

When they poached a gun player STILL in some prime years at 28 they paid not only his asking price but they duly paid in picks too.

They have confidence in enough to sell him the dream, take his contract on at 5 years and for the lot if we accept unders or at a 700kish price point. That there should tell you THEY think he is worth it.

You are underselling him and buying into the need to move him on leaving them with the whip hand.

We shall see when all the cards are on the table. But I wouldn’t swap hands with you. I think your argument is a bust.

(But I will be very happy to be wrong and for you to loudly tell me so!)

We are paying a stupidity tax for the initial Grundy contract. Doesn't matter which way it's presented or how we try to get out of it, the bill will have to be paid. The sooner we all come to grips with this, the sooner we can move on.

Agreed.

My thoughts we are paying a 300k stupid tax no matter what. Hence is it better to keep Grundy at effectively 700, thats my logic

Thanks LuckyLee for responding, because my question is really about me trying to understand this Grundy debuckle.

I agree $700 sounds about right to me for discussion sake.

So we are paying $300k premium for at a minimum a solid/good ruck.

I love Cox. The Cox/Cameron thing doing OK, but really I dont think its the sustainable solution.

Say Cameron is on say $300k, would it be better to keep grundy on the million, get Cameron of the books?

Give Grundy a marketing role post retirement on inflated salary?

I dont know, its just not making sense to me

I think also we’re trying to establish a wages hierarchy.

If we keep a misfiring Grundy and pay him $1 million per year, it really compromises our attempts to re-sign say DeGoey on $800K pa. And what about when N Daicos is due for an upgrade? Using the Grundy pay scale, we’d probably have to pay Nick $2 million pa!

By getting rid of Grundy’s bloated contract, we’re restoring some sort or wages fairness/balance and setting benchmarks for all other contract renewals.

Ok, that I can understand... bigger and long term picture perspective... thanks

We're in a bad spot but the best way to deal with it is by ripping the band aid off.

So true if everything thing in life. There a price to pay for everything- it’s just a question of who pays

I disagree. Rucks are over-rated. They’re crash-and-bash, work-horses. They should never be a club’s highest paid player or even close to it. The mega deals should be reserved for key forwards and Brownlow-worthy midfielders and nobody else. We stuffed up and are now regretting it.

Look at the Swans. Their GF ruck is four-club journeyman, Tom Hickey.

The Dees could just as easily succeed with someone like Rory Lobb, who is also gettable and much cheaper.

I reckon there are exceptions.
Paul Salmon, Simon Madden, Peter Moore… all players that you could select as key forwards in their own rights.
….or a freak like Adam Goodes who played ruck, rover, wing or key forward…
Or Ryder who played key back, key forward or ruck.
(Ps. That’s why I like that Keeler kid. He looks as though he could play anywhere).

He’s a winger isn’t he?

Sidebottom doesn’t look like he’s slowing down much and even if he does that role is coverable.

I think so. There were comments about him being in on-baller earlier. Graham won't help our clearances.

J Daicos and Quaynor were protected picks. As were Moore and N Daicos. In terms of “free market” key picks in the main draft in recent times, we have the likes of:

Scharenberg - bust
Freeman - bust
Grundy - big win but we ruined it
Maynard - big win
DeGoey - big win but drama!
Murphy - win
Stephenson - bust
Henry - going, going,…..
Rantall - bust
McInness - maybe
Macrae - maybe
Bianco - maybe
Poulter - maybe

A pretty underwhelming record.

Amazes my that Hine continues to be lauded as a drafting guru. His glory days of Pendles, Daisy, Beams, Sidebottom, Swanny, Tarrant, Welingham, etc were a LOOOONG time ago.

I never understand this rhetoric particularly since you only paint part of the picture. A recruiter can’t be held accountable for injuries and bad luck…we traded out most of our top picks in recent years…not saying we didn’t have busts, but no club picks them 100% of the time.

I have Hine behind Wells in terms of recruiting, Hawks do alright as well.

We’ve been one of the better performing sides over the past couple of decades…give it a rest.

Henry direct swap for Parfitt. Get it done!
Don’t worry about Tom Mitchell, their clearance stats very similar.
Parfitt much better age demographic.

What’s going on with Parfitt? This is his sixth AFL season and it’s the first time he’s averaged over 20 possessions. Can he find the ball?

Yep. Or Logue this year.
Will be interesting to see what happens with the players who have requested trades to Norf after todays revelations, if nothing else…

In my opinion Grundy’s issues started when teams started playing 2 specialist rucks. His big strength used to be running opponents into the ground with his aerobic capacity.
He can’t do that now and he has come back to the pack. His marking has always been average for a bloke his size but he is looking more cumbersome the last 2 years as well.
The game has changed a lot and the club is banking on the fact Brodie is just going to be a good ruck not a great one anymore. I agree with the club getting rid of him but I can’t fathom some of the guys coming in. Loading up on fringe players is never a good thing, we still have too many. I don’t trust Hill or McStay to be honest. I think the real improvement comes from a Tom Mitchell or Parfitt from Geelong. Fiorini I don’t mind as I think he’s been under utilised at GC.

I mean I love the faith, but I reckon Graham Wright has rocks in his head.

We are getting worse this off season imo. Losing Henry and Grundy and picking up extremely unproven talent like Frampton and Hill and players with severe limitations like McStay and Fiorini.

I think our brilliant performance on field has stopped you all from seeing the horrific decisions being made.

As for our salary cap, apparently we are the only team in the comp with one. We have very valuable players like Moore, DeGoey and Grundy, then a huge gap to players like Crisp, Adams and Maynard. Who the hell else is getting the money? Carlton legit have 6 players ( Walsh, Cripps, Weitering, Curnow, McKay and maybe Cerra) who should be on the same as our highest priced. Melbourne would have Gawn, Petracca, Oliver, May, Lever and Brayshaw on big money yet somehow have enough for Grundy. It makes no mathematical sense.

You should take your resume to the club, show them this post and then tell Graham to pack his stuff.

He's underwhelmed so far so they ain't getting a low pic for him.
Agree, I reckon his value sits between 20 and 30 in an open draft.
His consistency is really poor and his best and worst is a massive difference. Has the ability for sure and does remind me of Petracca in style. CP did also take a while too so he’s not a lost cause.
Raynor is a funny one because his defensive game is very strong but it’s almost like he still struggles with the pace of the game when he should be adjusted by now.

Yes, but if I'm Melbourne I'm absolutely taking the risk that he'll be able to help us win a flag over the next year or two.

He's worth much more to them than he is to us. They can't afford to miss out on him.
It’s interesting because who is Melbourne‘s other ruck option to trade in?

How about Jack Bowes from Gold Coast? Could either stay on the HBF allowing Maynard and Crisp more midfield time or we play him on ball? He’s the right age and has asked for a trade!

Crazy to think Geel will end up with Bruhn, Henry and obviously already have Holmes who is a gun. 3 picks in the top 20.

Yes they have a lot of old players, but geez, they know how to keep picking off players from other clubs and keep going.

Would 100% take Parfitt in a swap however.
Leagues ahead of us in list management and recruiting, Sydney, Brisbane and Richmond as well. This is why I expect us to drop down the ladder for the next year or two, we can't compete with these clubs in consecutive seasons until things change.
