I think Reef has probably shown enough to say that he’s going to be a player. Macrae is way premature though.
Really?
Macrae would be a regular at another team??????????? Tassie maybe but that's about it!
How come he had suitors who were interested in him before he said he wasn't going to seek a trade? If he was at West Coast, he'd have regular games. He's at a side with a stacked midfield.

If we got Moyle I'd be happy to trade Cameron out for a profit to a club that needs a ruck (Sydney or Port?) but that would probably be a bit harsh after the first year of his three year contract extension.

p.s. Yes I know Grundy is going to Sydney it was just a hypothetical because we're not getting Moyle anyway.

It would likely be Begg who would get chopped if we were bringing in another ruck, rather than an established senior ruck. I’d love Ned Moyle back at the Pies but I’m equally content to see how Steene and Begg develop.

You don’t actually know if he had suitors, all that was reported was that clubs were keeping an eye on him. Whether that translated to genuine interest is anyone’s guess.
Saying “if he was at the worst side in the comp he’d get games” doesn’t really mean much. Rupert Wills wasn’t AFL standard and he was playing in a preliminary final in 2019. Id argue our midfield isn’t particularly stacked either. We have a lot of handy players that can run through there, but really only Nick and Jordy are genuine stars going through. Mitchell, Adams, and Lipinski among a couple of others are ripe for the picking but Macrae has been judged an inferior option to this point.

2020 was a good draft year for us.

RookieMe: Finlay Macrae

RookieMe: Jack Ginnivan.

Macrae had a projected 12-25 range, another 25-50 range. If he'd played in the midfield for the then NAB League, he probably would have gone higher. He didn't and faced COVID challenges which probably impacted development. He played half-forward flank, not midfield during that campaign. Ultimately, I think his 2km time trial time was what helped draft him (6:17). Ginnivan went in underrated and off the back of a humble 2019 NAB League season but he did average more fantasy points than Macrae and had enough raw skills.

Phantoms
RookieMe: 2020 Draft Central Phantom Draft: First Round prediction (11 Macrae)
AFL: Cal Twomey's 2020 Phantom Draft: Top 30, late picks, your club's whispers (20 Macrae).

Macrae, McInnes, McCreery and Ginnivan all look like they're at or near AFL level. Four hits from a draft is good. Very good. I rate Ginnivan in the top five of his class, McCreery top 10. Macrae and McInnes have the potential to be top 20, top 10 in a few years.

We hit Henry and Poulter, too. Both left but they weren't misses.
""Talent Manager Steve Sharp described Ginnivan as having traits similar to Joel Selwood in the way he was able to draw free kicks at the stoppages.'"

I disagree here. If Macrae wanted to leave the Pies, he wouldn't be playing footy at a non-AFL club in 2024. I think fans here are quick to write off his ability or that he's not playing. Macrae is the sort of player who, if he was on another list, people would be championing to trade in. Cherry picking Wills as an example does not reflect the current match committee or reflect the injuries we had at the time. Our midfield has enough mature bodies keeping Macrae out. Next season, I expect Macrae to play early and not look back.

Because clubs are prepared to give 2nd chances sometimes in the hope they get a soldier on the cheap.

Unfortunately for Fin he has had a slow career start and is up against it a bit. He is a chance to become a soldier in a best 22 but probably needs to start playing a lot next year. Chance of becoming a starting main mid in a better class AFL team is almost gone.

Being traded to another club doesn’t necessarily equate to automatic games. I have no doubt another club would take a punt on him if he was available because he’s still relatively young and was an early pick, but that means little in context of his actual ability at this point. Plenty of young players get traded to new clubs only to be out of the system completely in 1-2 years.

And cherry picking Wills? I could name plenty of low level players like him who got games but ultimately weren’t up to it and never cracked 50 afl games, but I don’t have all day. You’re talking nonsense if you think Macrae is proven yet, period.

We are getting a lot of contradictory information about this. At first Tom Browne said this was true, then others reported that it wasn't, as the deal is between Collingwood and Grundy. It does seem more likely that the deal relies on Collingwood's consent so it would be awesome to be off the hook for this one.
