Well you'd hope something changes cause it's not a once off. We keep making the same mistake with our first round pick trades. Our trades for "elite" players that we overpay for like Treloar, Beams, Schultz have all been thoroughly underwhelming. We're still yet to attract a genuine elite FA.

Our best trades have been from spotting unproven talents that we trade for with very little like Crisp, Cameron, Hill.

Hindsight is wonderful but at the time I said I thought we should’ve traded Grundy when his contract demands were so excessive. We could’ve easily got 2 first round picks and maybe strengthened our 2nd round and even though he was a proven player there was a big history of second string ruckman who change clubs and become good players so replacing him on the money he was on shouldn’t have been a huge concern. Cameron for us, Nankervis, McEvoy, Boyd have all played in flags after changing clubs.

That’s pretty dire straights right there.

I wouldn’t describe the draft as a lottery. Obviously the top 20 picks are more likely to make it, but getting decent players beyond that is not just down to luck.

I agree though that clubs are less reliant on the draft these days, and are finding multiple avenues to bring in talent that can impact straight away.

I guess a balance is required.

I realise you can't know what would happen in the future.

I thought at the time a ruck/forward was more a requirement than another average midfielder (ie Bytel) Particularly with Cox's age, Cameron's form the year before, the lack of development of Begg & Steene, the injury to Dan & the reliance on Checkers.

To me it seemed like a no brainer. At the time.

I think this year Teakle would have been a better opinion than Bytel for us. But I'm no recruiter so I trust the people who do the job and got us a premiership last year.

Well we have no choice but to trust them, but Bytel playing in the VFL isn't currently helping us much at the moment.

Teakle, on the other hand would have been very handy these past weeks without Cox, Checkers, McStay.

Furthermore, it is not as if Hine has gone rogue. The match committee outline the types of roles we are after and Hine tries to find the players. The problem with winning in 2010 we have tried to find a Leigh Brown that could play multiple roles. We ruined Dawes. He was a good 2nd forward. We tried to have him play chop out in the ruck and when that didn't work we moved him on. Tried it with the Big Q. That failed. Tried it with Jesse White. That didn't work. We couldn't go after big names as our salary cap was reportedly under strain from 2011 Furthermore as you highlighted we haven't had the endless supply of draft picks Carlton, Essendon and Melbourne have enjoyed

Not having access to top talent is a repercussion of being up there for a few years and winning a flag. Can’t do much about it without FA. You have rises and falls.

We cannot afford not to be contending every year - that would be doing Nick Daicos a disservice and wasting his talents.

We are leaning towards the Geelong pathway except we can't land the big free agents like they did with Dangerfield and Cameron. Both elite.

I'm struggling to see who we can recruit to fill those voids.

Sheezel, Reid, Gulden, would be a pipe dream but it is the calibre partner in crime that Nick deserves.

As for the forward well there isn't another Jezza. JUH might be the closest imo.

Chad Rintoul could have been a force in our midfield back in the day, had he been able to play longer.
