I'm pretty sure you could find a missed throw or three for every team in every game. I mean if Keaths effort from a few weeks ago wasn't paid, this is nothing.
Heaps in packs. This was a strange one, so open and obvious. No idea why he didnt squeeze out a little handball.

Anyway. It was a cracking game, shame umpiring is the talking point again. If you guys had have won more of these close ones, which will come with experience, you'd be top 4.

He got whacked in the mouth - pretty confident that's a free every day of the week.

It was a hard one to see though - at least on the telecast it was - I'm usually wincing at all the close shaves - but didn't even notice that until he went up to the umpire.

On the tv you are only viewing from one spot, there are four field umpires out there and each at a different angle.

If four umpires can’t see this then lets go back to three rather than reduce the umpire quality.

Just a slightly different take after considering things.

We all know that first half was really poor in terms of not taking our chances and letting Collingwood own the corridor especially in the 2nd. That we corrected and got right on top until the last 1/4 where we kicked ourselves out of it and copped some disgracefully biased umpiring to ensure Collingwood got away with the win masks something. That Collingwood side were without DeGoey and Sidebottom - 2 guys that traditionally hurt us badly. We played a strong game contested wise and outscored them in terms of scoring shots, but maybe we are a bit further off them than what that game showed had they also been at full strength

Put a line through Keays & Sholl for a team that performs when the heat is on.
yep based on yesterday. Murphy and Sloane also poor. Sloanes fumbles reminded me of his 2017 GF performance,

Sholl is the most obvious weak link however and isnt up to the pressure and physical side of things. Keays had most clearances or similar but just lacks skills and awareness. Murphy decent most of the year but not y/day

And we lost Murray before half time. Might have affected the outcome?

yes true..but so did McHenry coming on - he was good

However, McHenry would not have normally replaced Murray so structurally that hurt us
Particularly allowing Cox to get a smaller forward & kicking 2 goals in the last.

These days they let you propel it with both hands, Dacois did the same thing over his right shoulder streaming forward in the last.
Just think if they didn’t let these go the bulldogs wouldn’t have survived and Beverage would be just a run of the mill failed coach.

It's an interesting one. It hurt you in the last, but the bounce you got from the shorter defence tore us to shreds in the third and we had to sub out a tall for a pressure forward.

Umpires could have created phantom frees for Cox whether Murray was on or not.

Do you think they should go back to 2 umps and bring in a video review system where each captain can call for a review during the game say 2 per game?, sick of crucial moments not being seen or called by the umps.

No to reviews....they can't get a ball going the right side of the goal line, good luck them reviewing HTB.

The simple answer if for umpires to become better at what they do by being more accountable. There were 44 footballers on the field at the same time who are held to a very high level of accountability, why not the officials?

Ar this stage we would be better off with an AI computer adjudicating the game with a speaker on a drone. At least it would take out the human mistakes.

Trouble is A1 forms it's initial learnings from history or someone teaching fundamentals.

Either way we would still be screwed.

I think the overarching problem here is the umpires, all 4 of them, struggled with the pace of the game.

Errors both sides.

Dawson's is highlighted because it could have easily have changed the outcome.

But I bet we could go through the game and find 10 errors for both sides.

The standard of umpires this year is terrible. Diluted the talent base with the extra unnecessary umpire.

The AFL has long stated the head is sacrosanct*, you can even get suspended when you don't hit the head but there was a potential for injury.
*Except if the head belongs to an AFC player in the last 10 seconds of a match 30m from goal.

Since they went to 4 the umpiring has gone down hill. More umpires doesn't mean better umpiring.

Means we are using poorer quality umpires.

Also, I have seen plenty of non-decisions where the umpires are confused as to who is officiating.

Most importantly it has led to more inconsistency.

Keays should get 2 weeks for ripping Cox's glasses off. Its a vital part of his playing equipment and was just not warranted. Unsportsmanlike conduct at least
Keays publicly stated that it was a complete and total accident. He doesn't even know how the glasses ended up in his hand. He was pushed just as he reached Cox.

The images back up his words.
IMG_1614 Large.jpeg
Ben's hand is splayed across Cox's head, not attempting to grip the glasses. And importantly, #31 is pushing Ben's arm away, so Ben has limited say in what happens next.

IMG_1615 Large.jpeg
Ben is not even looking at Cox and is being strongly pushed away by #31. He can't see what his hand is closing on. Probably just hoping to 'grab Cox' eg jumper.

IMG_1616 Large.jpeg
Ben is now stumbling towards the ground, leg in the air, and is paying no attention to what his hand is doing.

Ben's statement that it was a complete accident looks well and truly validated. No reason in these images to disbelieve Ben, nor would it have been in character for him to do it deliberately.

Nonetheless he has apologised to Cox that it happened at all. Well done Ben.

A $1000 misconduct fine has been imposed. link
