Loving this heat and Carey and in particular King are spot on. Noble needs to realise this job isn’t a free ride because we are young and developing - an obvious game plan and style, addressing deficincies (players who can ****ing kick) and clear improvement is all we want. Not expecting finals, not expecting miracles, just give us something. Preseson and the first three games of this season have been awful.

There was enough ****ing talent on that park to be at least competitive. I did not expect to win, I did not expect to be within 8-10 goals to be quite honest. These ****ers are AFL players.. its not the players. Its the coaching and direction

Every. Damn. Time.

Terms like ‘irrelevant’, ‘small market’ and ‘long term viability’ get trotted out.

AFL Brisbane v North Melbourne 2022: Roos CEO Ben Amarfio says the club is committed to staying the course and developing its young talent

North Melbourne’s senior and VFL teams were both beaten by more than 100 points over the weekend. But CEO Ben Amarfio has reaffirmed the club’s long-term plan.

North Melbourne chief executive Ben Amarfio says the club is committed to staying the course and developing its young talent despite an early-season “bumpy ride”.

Coach David Noble’s Roos are 1-2 but were battered by Brisbane on a weekend that both its senior and VFL teams lost by more than 100 points.

The Lions completely outclassed a North Melbourne outfit that was missing midfielders Luke Davies-Uniacke (concussion), Tarryn Thomas (internal bruising) and Ben Cunnington (cancer recovery).

But Amarfio said the club was unflinching in its planning about a bright future.

“We knew when we embarked upon this strategy it would take some time and there would be some pain,” he said.

“We all went in with eyes wide open that at times it would be a bumpy ride and wouldn’t be a smooth journey.

“There was a lot of growth in the back half of last year and the expectation was we would just carry on from there but life and the universe doesn’t work like that.

“We are not getting spooked. We know what we have signed up for. It doesn’t mean we won’t challenge ourselves and question what we are doing.

“We question if what we are doing is enough, we constantly tinker, we constantly try to make our messaging simpler and the roles easier to understand.

“We just need to keep getting games into our kids. Their growth will come. We just have to be patient.”

Cunnington is not expected back until the last third of the season — if at all — as he recovers from testicular cancer, while Jed Anderson continues to build match fitness after a late start to the season.

Adding to the selection dilemma, high-priced recruit Callum Coleman-Jones managed just nine possessions and kicked a point at VFL level, while Flynn Perez amassed 21 possessions and Jacob Edwards kicked 1.1.

Noble agreed the AFL loss was embarrassing, while club legend Wayne Carey said the club was light years from being competitive.

“I think the coaches are putting a high demand on what we require and we need our players to toe the line,” Noble said.

“If you don’t bring your energy, you get that result. We have got to go back and have a bloody good look at ourselves. That’s the bottom line.”

If we are committed to developing young talent, then why the hell is polec in the side? Why is JZ having to be hid in the back line as a liability just so he can take the field as captain? Our backline is a disgrace, which is a mix of poor structure, leaving others out to dry to protect individual "leaders" and nom existent talent coming through. I mean no other team's back line structure collapses at the loss of 1 KPD which has happened as soon as McKay went down in 2 matches

be nice if they said something directly to their supporters.

I can’t really comment on Polec, but I do understand why they are hiding Ziebell in the backline. He is undeniably the best leader at the club (which I get isn’t tangible).

In a side that is seriously lacking leadership, arguably the worst in the comp, we don’t really have a choice from my perspective. Until our young guys are able to carry that load of leadership, our hands are tied IMO.

Yes I get he is a defensive liability. Unfortunately with all the leadership we’ve lost, it’s just something we need to accept for the next 18 months. When the young blokes are ready, Jack will move on.

Interesting comment on radio - not sure who it was. He said the biggest sign of how a club is travelling is how they turn up the week after a 100 point belting.
Scott's team usually responded very well to thrashings. How did that work out long term?

Nobody from the VFL is pushing for selection. Heck the VFL squad couldn't even run out 4 quarters on the weekend.

Amarfio can waffle on all he likes about "staying the course" - where the **** are our kpp?

McKay goes down = back line ****ed
Larkey goes down = forward line ****ed

We are in a world of hurt at present.

God forbid the midfielders we have drafted don't come on, then we are totally ****ed.

Brady and Luff are well below average at this point in time and the 1s and 2s being destroyed to the tune of 200 points backs that assumption up.

Where the North Melbourne of the second half of last year gone? This year's side from halfway through the second qtr against hawthorn has being worse than last year's start.

Why is Coleman Jones in the seconds? He played some brilliant games last year as a second tall fwd that pinch hits in the ruck. Instead you play 2 ruck, where neither is a second target up forward. It's either xerri or Goldy as ruck. Why is polec playing? Why has Stephenson started so poorly?

Where Is the growth in the talented young players, that showed so much last year?

CCJ didn't have a full pre season and then was the weakest of the three rucks when we tried to play them all in the same side (literally for the first time in round 1 even though we had been trying to all pre season). By all reports Polec had a good pre season but a leopard (a species of cat) doesn't change it's spots so easily. Stephenson's form is a question for the ages.

Growth of talented young players? Phillips had COVID then glandular fever, Powell had OP then put on much needed muscle in the preseason and can't run for shit, LDU got his brain case caved in so is out injured, Tarryn Thomas had half his organs bruised after a mistimed smother. Which other youngsters do you want to know about? Mahony is doing well fwiw.

Simple answer to the question of why we're so shit is that our midfield is utterly decimated right now and we keep having our KPP cop small injuries (Mackay, CCJ, Comben, Walker) and right now there is no synergy or cohesion on any single line because of that... also we're just shit? IDK. Fitness was a huge issue for us apparently and we may have over corrected for that in the preseason and so our gameplan has turned to utter shizen when you add in the other factors.

A leader shouldnt need to be hidden in the back pocket or be instructed to collect cheap uncontested possessions chipping the ball around the backline off its the intangibles that's keeping him as a leader, he can do it on the training track if his form and ability doesn't warrant selection. Hiding the captain in a back pocket with 0 responsibility isn't exactly on field leadership in my eyes. LMac (in his proper rebounding role) offers much more and is probably the stop gap until JHF is ready

LDU comes in for JZ. Turner moves to his shut down back pocket role to replace JZ instead of tagging a mid, and LDU slots in to the midfield rotation. Atu also an option to replace JZ if we are dropping a mid for LDU

Last year, you could identify some kind of corridor game plan with 45 kicks from half back into the centre with over laps.. is that now gone? I cannot recall one 45 kick?
I really want a definitive answer on this one, assuming we could trust what they say. Did we just not practise it enough in the preseason for some reason(focus on fitness for example)? Are we not capable of fully implementing (We're just not good enough to put it together, we are following it but they're not good enough at it yet to make it recognisable, personnel availability issues)? Are we just ****ing winging it for some reason?

I didn't see last weekend's game but it was a clear issue in the previous two, and when it's an issue against a team with a dozen first choice players out and a few call ups from a lower league filling in... then it's a real damned issue.

If they do give us an honest explanation for it I don't know as that really changes much anyway, it certainly doesn't make us play any better this week. Given everything else I almost think we might as well just play the kids, and use a good ol' one on one style with a few preferred methods of moving the ball if we genuinely can't get whatever this gameplan is to work soon, or if they know it's either no good or we're simply not capable of it.

Really shit situation to be facing.
