AFL injury list: Latest news on injuries and selection ahead of Round 4

One of the game’s best captains will be given a breather, while a debutant is in the mix for the Roos. Find out who is returning and sidelined. INJURY LIST

NORTH MELBOURNE

Ben Cunnington Testicular cancer - Indefinite

Luke Davies-Uniacke - Concussion - Test

Will Phillips - Glandular fever - 1-2 weeks

Phoenix Spicer - Hamstring - 1-2 weeks

Tarryn Thomas - Internal bruising - 3-7 weeks

The midfield unit is set for a boost with Luke Davies-Uniacke returning from the mandatory 12-day concussion break, while first-year chance Miller Bergman is in the mix along with Atu Bosenavulagi and Flynn Perez. But Noble, who has received angry emails from fans this week, reaffirmed wholesale changes were not a viable way forward for a club committed to a long rebuild. “I’ve had a few emails from our fans and we understand their sentiment, but we’re here to get work done and we’ve got to get that mentality right so it’s there every week,” the Roos coach said.

This is exactly what I pointed out and got ripped by a couple of posters for it last week. Well now the King has said it perfectly.

The culture even among some supporters has changed to that of one that accepts mediocrity.

It was like celebrating beating up a disabled kid. And sure enough, we were predictably destroyed when finally facing quality opposition.

Hopefully these comments from past players fire us up, but they shouldn't have to.
He’s wrong. West Coast were certainly undermanned but they still had plenty of good AFL players - including premiership players on every line - under a premiership coach. Nothing wrong with a kid getting his first AFL win, or guys getting their first wins with a new club, or players who just won a wooden spoon and haven’t won much in the past few years, singing the song and enjoying it. Every club sings the song after a win, no-one pretends they didn’t like winning, no matter how crap their opposition is - I have no idea why a few people think this North team should be the exception.

As a supporter I also enjoy watching a win more than watching a loss. And anyone who thinks what any of us say on Bigfooty affects the club‘s or players’ standards (this ”tolerance of mediocrity” line) needs to get over themselves.

Meh doesn't bother me, it's his job. I'd rather have us in the spotlight being talked about and being held accountable.

There is something oddly ironic and fundamentally wrong about a broadcast media leech such as Matthew Lloyd saying that a club is irrelevant. The very fact that he feels the need to discuss the club means that it is relevant. If he suggested in the production meeting that he wanted to discuss something that was truly irrelevant, then his executive producer would send him out of the room and continue the meeting without him.

Comes with the territory of being garbage in a real build

Melbourne- good grief remember Lyon having the pi$$ taken out of him on the FS?

Carlton and *… do I need say more

Fremantle

Lions- I remember an interview on radio with Fagan that blistered him but he’s still there

It doesn’t matter. They laud No 1 and moan about 18th

We need to be patient and buy that Membership

The cooking time little overdone with the basting underdone giving it a gamey texture on the palette..

A bit like his footy atm..

Bang on, H2H.

Imagine the crap we'd have copped if JHF's first ever win was greeted with something like this....

It was our first win in front of home fans for 3 years, first win for 2022, first win for JHF, Greenwood and Corr.
You’ve still got to celebrate and have fun in what is an overly serious environment at times.

As long as they don’t take the pi$$ out of the opposition I couldn’t care how the celebrate.

Matthew Lloyd just dug the boots in on CH9 - absolute dog

Has never got over Mickey Martyn dragging him along the ground, face down, for ten metres. He’d still have grazes on his knob from that day. Hates North. That’s ok Lloyds, we think you are a s**tstain anyway mate.

Boomer provides some insight from the 1 minute mark...

"and our training's OK"

Not a ringing endorsement. Makes me think of the comment tazza said in the Phillips thread "In light of how terrible Saturday night was they’re actually training and listening to the coaches."

Jonathan Brown just displayed the most introspection he's ever been able to muster by mumbling out "maybe we overreacted to North's loss to Brisbane last week" during the half time show on Fox

After the game when asked; "Does this say more about North or Sydney?" - He said, " I think it says more about Brisbane, they were huge last week and this week , we might have overreacted a bit with North"

Something like that.

Time will tell.

The Early Tackle: Round 4 AFL and AFLW Grand Final talking points

The Bulldogs’ top-four hopes are slipping away fast – and there’s one big reason why. Sam Landsberger looks at the club’s issues and all the big Round 4 talking points.

Shinboner spirit

Atu Bosenavulagi’s turnover in the final minute when he should’ve pumped it inside 50m will get replayed over and over. But before that there were countless reference points for what North Melbourne must stand for this season.

In the last quarter, Jaidyn Stephenson chased down Justin McInerney, Luke Davies-Uniacke chased down Errol Gulden, Bailey Scott executed a defensive spoil in a two-on-one and Cameron Zurhaar fearlessly crashed into Paddy McCartin.

Throw in Aiden Corr’s goalkeeper efforts to stop a Chad Warner snap, Ben McKay’s concentration to get a finger on Lance Franklin’s snap and Jason Horne-Francis’ first half – he had 16 disposals, five clearances, four tackles and almost a hanger – and there was plenty of Shinboner spirit.

Not since Chris Judd, and perhaps Matt Rowell, has a draftee arrived so ready and with a man’s body.

Jack Ziebell looked grumpy in an undersized Round 1 duel against Jack Gunston. On Saturday, he kicked five goals and gave away perhaps the assist of the year to Kayne Turner.

The Roos were desperate and did everything but bank the points. Importantly, they delivered the turnaround coach David Noble had demanded. Funny what happens when you’re switched on.

Noble has an ace up his sleeve

Eyebrows were raised at the opening bounce of North Melbourne's clash against Sydney with captain Jack Ziebell stationed in the forward line. The veteran had made a successful move to the backline in the past two seasons, but could be a bigger asset for the Roos up forward. The 31-year-old kicked the first goal of the game and finished with a career-high five for the match in a stunning performance that nearly inspired his side to an upset victory. He also brought a hard edge to the Roos' forward set up with his ferocious attack on the ball giving his teammates a real lift. It remains to be seen whether he will continue in his new role, but Saturday's performance at least gives Noble a new weapon up forward if he wants to mix things up. - Ben Sutton
