Hit the nail on the head.
And were does it say that we are paying him +$800k pa? The original offer was $600k pa, front loaded to 800 in year 1. So i doubt very highly we've gone back and added another $200k pa for each of the 4 years. Regardless

It's just guesstimates, but if Freo said they wouldn't match Melbourne's REVISED offer that was put to him after he said "no thanks, I'm going to Freo, it's not about the money", then you'd have to think they upped the $$$ value to something he couldn't refuse.

Good on him.

And I'm not sure how we could have offered a higher pick than 16, when that was as high as we had... We offered the best we had, so those saying we didn't want to deal are a little off the mark it seems...

Great pick up for the Demons IMO, doesn't really matter what he's being paid they needed a tall forward as bad as anyone in the comp and now they have one.

RE: The Emma Quayle quote about how Freo have conducted themselves this week, I said the same thing yesterday and had Fremantle fans lining up to have a go at me.

Winners are grinners, Voss should be happy but I have the feeling Freo have spent the last few weeks/month burning bridges.

Its great to be ruthless sometimes, but the clubs are interdependent and many have long memories.

Anyways, very happy with the trade considering he was uncontracted and seemed to be definitely gone. Plus with the prospect of getting absolutely shafted by Freo, I can live with pick 12. :thumbsu:

It was reported earlier today that Fremantle had offered pick 16.

Not such a huge difference between picks 12 and 16 in my mind - doesn't this mean that Brisbane are still being slightly screwed by Melbourne for pick 12??

Of course Freo are going to try and save face by saying he's getting paid a ridiculous amount.

There's no way he's on 800+
i think he is on 800k , emma quayle said freo matched melbournes initial offer of 500-550k but couldn't match their second offer. And freo said that new offer would have made him the highest paid player at freo over sandi and pav.

Haha....didn't see that coming. Good luck to both parties. Sounds like he played everyone.

Am very happy we didn't throw big money at him as we have a few guys already taking up alot of cap space. Would hate to get stuck when guys like Barlow, Mora, Balla, Clarke come up for new contracts in the future. Don't think he's worth that sort of money to us as a secondary forward.

Now looking forward to the draft, hopefully we keep our picks in place.

I wonder what changed his mind.
The money or desperation just to get out of lions and could see Freo wasn't going to get a deal done.

It would be the money no doubt. He wanted to be with family, he could just about afford to bring them all over to Melbourne now!

Have we offered a contract too big? not imo. We desperately need another key forward, one who likes to throw his weight around. Plus we have huge cap space after Scully chose to head North.

We will probably front load the hell out of it, make the most of our free cap space, then in a couple of years time when a few of our our kids start to deserve higher $, we will be able to account for that.

A snippet from demonland suggests that he was offered $3.12m over 4 years, or $780,000. So long as we pay most of tat in the first 2 years, we should have no trouble fitting in the younger plays demands when they come up for renewal too.

He's probably on 800k for the first few years of his 4 year contract. Not a bad move considering you've got the cap space. Would be a lot better than upgrading the contracts of players like Brad Green and etc.

well probably the fact that if he went into the national draft he would have ended up at GWS. wouldnt surprise me if he leaves for WA in a couple of seasons.

M Clarke and Tippett in my opinion are similar type of players . They are both pretty versatile big men who both wont excel as forwards but could be at their best as the modern day ruckmen.

But how have they conducted themselves that's so bad? How is it different from how Collingwood conducted themselves with us over Tarrant, or Carlton over Warnock? Serious question.

The first couple of days was spent on the "Jaegar deal" - presumably to get a better pick to offer Brisbane, which the AFL squashed.

Then it was offering up the Palmer priority pick (according to Brisbane officials), which was rejected, so they did the pick swap with GWS to ensure that they kept a first round pick.

So they offered pick 20 - a first round pick like Brisbane had previously requested, which was knocked back.

Then it was pick 16 - the best pick we had, which Brisbane was considering when Clark did his triple backward somersault with twist and pike.

All this has been stated by Brisbane officials that the offer was improved each time.

What else should they have done? And how is it that they have conducted themselves badly, compared to other clubs? Surely this is a better outcome for Freo than what would have happened in the past with a panicked deal involving BOTH our first round picks AND most likely a decent young player.

What should Freo have done differently? Serious question.

Not even Crazy Vossy would do that. Redden > Tippett, there's no way in hell you'd be getting a pick upgrade on top of that.
Which is why Tippett aint going anywhere, as Adelaide will require overs for him if Brisbane desperately want Tippo. But it is for another thread...

Yep no doubt it would be heavily front loaded, Melbourne has previously come out and said that we would be front loading our contracts and paying as close to 100% of the cap as possible this year so we have room in the future.

Melbourne had a hole out of that salary cap for the next few years or so now that scully left.
They threw the kitchen sink at Clark and payed overs because he was available and they can afford it.
Although I do doubt why they didn't do their homework better and pay this amount to a more marquee player.

Freo have been such d heads over this wouldnt surprise me if Mitch had enough of them

Melb act professionally & Freo were the opposite and he has gone to the Dees.......

Sure the was a great offer but seeing how both clubs acted may of been the clincher

The Dockers drove a hard bargain with Griffin last year and came out well in front, can't help but think they assumed it would happen again.

How do people know Clark is getting 800k a year, has that been said anywhere can anyone provide an accurate source for this. Because in the west australian and on the afl site it has said 500-550k a year for 4 years. Thats not over paying.

GWS would have picked M.Clark up in the PSD but Brisbane would have still got a compo pick so Brisbane were happy with that and so would have been GWS. M.Clark would have been the only one not happy, and it must have been clear fremantle were not prepared to give up enough for him. They must have there eye specifically on someone at 20 id say. Wouldnt surpirse me to see Hill picked up at 20 when draft time comes around. Because i dont understand why they wouldnt give up 16 and 20 and give themselves a clear chance at a flag.

On afl site, expected pick 8 and 12 will be offered for Tippett which will be extremly hard to reject considering Tippett could go for a lot less next year.

OMG

Melb overpaid for Clark - both in draft picks and salary.

Surely Bris won't offer pick 8 and 12 for Tippett.

Couldn't have two dud trades in a day.

We offerred basically the same thing! What is your problem? Trade week is a time for back and forth negotiations it is meant to be slow and painful.
