Players don't generally play football with their nickname.

Pav's nickname on here is bignose, for instance. Don't ever remember him using his nose to play the game.

How else do you think he kicked goals?

Ryan's an absolute gun - AA player and premiership player. Marketable too.

Yes he's coming back from a serious injury, but I don't see any reason to muck around when it comes to A graders that are under 30 (lord we don't have many right now). Very fine with a 2 year extension.

Was a gun for a period of time , was an Aa player and has never looked like meeting that mark in the numerous seasons since and he isn’t marketable at all. The odd high mark which will be becoming less and less does not make your marketable.

Nor does performing trick shots before the game for the eagles instagram crowd and not getting a kick in the game or missing straight forward kicks on goals.

He was statistically better in 2021 than his AA year but missed a few games. 2022 was ok not great but the team was shite. 2023 he barely played due to his torn hammy. Probably not as bad as you make out. Its really the injuries that have set him back more than his abillity.

If you’ve ever seen him at a junior footy club, all the kids love him and he is great with them. He’s very marketable,

Turns 28 this year, 3 Hammy Tendon surgeries, Yea, Nah.. He done lads, Even Kerry said he was never the same player once he tore the hammy tendon and Kerr was an onballer who didnt focus his game around flying high and explosive jumping. Liam Ryan may have a couple yrs left maybe, He started late, he will finish early like Cyril Rioli. Don't think Willie Rioli will be around in another 2 or 3 yrs. Know what you are looking at lads. Be realistic now. This is same time Yeo started getting Groin troubles, has he got back yet 🤣 i hope 2024 we get to see Yeo play more than three quarters of the year.

More than likely he'll just have to evolve and be less of a zippy flying forward and more of a role player who uses his smarts to get into the right place. He won't be the same but can still be a dangerous forward. Long isn't fast nor does he take screamers yet everyone loves him.

It's not like Ryans goal sense is going to disappear, just his leap and pace.

Agreed - I’d add that he’s an excellent field kick too. He adds a lot to the team even without the hangers.

He would use it to protect the area the ball was dropping into

The afl tried to legislate against it but it was considered nasist

Have been lucky enough to have conversations with people who are very close to both Liam Baker and Chad Warner in the last 2 weeks. I wouldn’t be surprised if both ended up at the Eagles in 2025 (Baker) and 2026 (Warner).

Baker is a free agent at the end of this year and pretty much said he is keen to come back to WA. Richmond are in an interesting time in their rebuild. Freo won’t be able to get close to what we can offer for a player of his ability. Would be just the type of player who we need to recruit in my opinion. Tough, uncompromising and been part of a successful club and culture + can play any position from half back to half forward.

Warner has already met with Don Pyke twice this off season, once to play golf and then another time at the family home. Obvious connection through Sydney. Still 2 seasons to play out on his contract so one to watch, but a player worth spending up on. Would compliment our young midfield so nicely, whilst still being young himself.

You sure about Baker being a FA?

It seems he will have played 7 years which means he won’t qualify for free agency (8 years). I wouldn’t trade for him given his age if this is the case, although would be happy to take him in the PSD in the unlikely event it became an option.

If he is wanting to head home west, being a dual premiership player may buy some goodwill with the releasing club.
Richmond may not extract full value in order to accommodate his wishes.

I would love a Baker, at 27 we would get a solid 4 - 6 years from a very good but underrated player. He'd maybe still be around when our current promising crop are in contention.

My view for 25+ y.o. for a team in our situation would be FA only, would be a good addition if it cost nothing trade wise. If you’re in the window and have identified a player to help win a flag then great, make the trade. I can’t see Baker being part of a flag at West Coast at his age. I’d much rather use draft capital on young players or to facilitate a trade for a player like Busslinger or Logan McDonald who will be in the perfect age bracket when we are challenging. I do take your point with bringing in players coming from success and/or a good culture, the club might lean towards you view rather than mine. I’d expect Richmond to want our 2R pick which I’d want to use on Busslinger.

I'm hearing Liam Baker to Freo for 2025, fwiw.

Looks like he is, after this season is complete he would have been listed for 7 years and entering his 8th season.

There’s mixed and at times hypocritical reporting on his FA status. For example in that article, there is a picture of him and they mention him at the start yet under the Richmond section he is not listed as a free agent. My reading of FA (in Baker’s case) is that you must have completed 8 seasons before you are eligible and in Baker’s case he will have done 7.

Very happy for Freo to trade for him if the above is the case but would be a good FA pick up on a fair contract in the event that it’s not. Let’s not discount him signing another year for Richmond to take him to FA in 2025 if the above is correct.

Don Pyke and his relationship to Swans players has me excited about what we could potentially bring in over the next 2 to 3 years.

Must stay the course and hit the draft with those early picks again this year. Pick up a FA or two. Then from 2025 on consider trades for key players.

End of 2024 and 2025 we will have some serious cap space to spend attracting players.

Swans have Warner × 2, McDonald, and Sheldrick.
