Would he be worth band 1 compo which is the discussion. No. No way.

The band 1 FA compo is being discussedwith players who just are not the top level. Is he a Buddy Franklin level?

If that’s your cutoff then there’s probably been about two players worth Band 1 compo in the last decade.

If you look at who’s actually received Band 1 compo over the years, Wilkie would sit comfortably on that list. Moreso than Battle, and moreso than McKay last year (based on his North career, albeit he’s been very good since joining Essendon)

AFL Salary Cap -
2023: $15.02m
2024: $15.79m
2025: $17.76m
2026: $18.29m
2027: $18.44m

So clubs have an extra $2m per year to spend in 2025, $2.5m in 2026 and $2.65m in 2027 over current spending

That’s a lot of extra coin for clubs to throw around, especially for free agents who don’t cost any draft capital
Last year was just AFL inept with those increases not included in the FA compensation calculation so pretty much all of the clubs that lost players were getting overcompensated including Flynn, a late 2nd round to GWS

Last year it was the absurdity of North getting pick 3 for McKay

This year it could be St Kilda getting pick 5 (on current ladder position) for Josh Battle

I hope that part of this competitive balance review the AFL is doing focuses on FA compensation. Clubs receiving top 5 draft picks for middling players is insanity

If this is what the formula spits out, it needs to be changed and/or change the bands such that band 1 is an end of first round pick

Band 1 should change to mid first round after the non finalists have picked .

It works both ways so top teams don't lose lance franklin types for pick 19-20 and bottom 10 teams are more likely to match

And with Ross going full whinge on equalisation and the Saints getting no help. Whats the chance the Saints are trying to get some of that secret herbs and spices to gift them pick 5 compo as a bit of a backhouse deal?

Band 2 end of 1st is what Battle is worth and that is all. Everyone knows it and its just common sense.
The saints secret herbs and spices should include sacking RTB

Davis has been a consistent performer for WA across their four champs games and signed off with probably his best, booting three goals in a valiant effort against Vic Country. He was increasingly dangerous as the contest wore on, showcasing his versatile skill set and athletic profile, able to impact in the air and on the ground.

Well just more proof the system is broken.

Actually it isnt as the AFL can do whatever they want to and no-one knows what is going on.......which is exactly how the AFL operate.

Yes, the system is deeply flawed, but I don’t think adding “is Obeanie aware of the existence of this All-Australian player” as one of the criteria is the way to fix it.

Very underrated player.

I’ll mention one and it will set a few off due to we would be his 4th club.

Will Setterfield. Decent start to the year and got a knee injury and struggling to get back in as Dons try and go explosive midfield.

Would come very cheap if we could get him on board.
