A deal I’d do with North

Big bid for Josh Rotham which nets us pick 5.
Eagles trade pick picks 13,26,30 for Zac Fisher (Barass compo plus 26)
North trade pick 13,26,30 for Houston (Port cover some of Houston’s salary)

So deal is

Eagles get pick 5 and Zac Fisher for 13,26,30
North get Houston and Rotham for Zac Fisher
Port get 13,26,30 for Houston

North giving up 2 mill on salary space over 5 years basically to get Houston for cheap . Eagles take on Zac Fisher plus dump a ton of picks to get pick 5 as Thanks . Port gets picks to get trades done.

Fisher would be a good pickup for us to fill a need. I’d trade future 2nd to get back in then 30s also

How does Port get our pick 30 :D

Big hole in that
Two holes actually. Pick 30 from the Barrass trade and something else in the Baker trade, seeing as this suggestion would effectively be 13 for Baker + Port's F4.

The Age rankings/mock draft (https://archive.md/uM2zx) make for interesting reading, esp given they say they've spoken to 12 recruiters or list managers this week. West Coast preferences are mentioned a few times (draper, TT, hynes) so I presume we are one of the 12.
If we are heavily into draper as reported and he's expected to make it to 6-7ish, certainly wouldn't surprise to see us trade back even if it only nets us a late 1st rounder or early second. Late first rounder could be used on Baker & retain 14.
Also it says a lot of clubs rate Murphy Reid only mid to late first-round
Draper at 10, they correctly pointed out his skills and decision making as below the other contenders. That combined with his small stature and back makes me want WC to steer well clear

People suggesting band 1 compo for Rotham.

So ESPN saying Langford finished equal with FOS and Jagga in the 2km at 6:25. That is an incredible effort from him and he obviously worked very hard on his tank this year. Just went up in my book.

eaglespremiers can you confirm that report is correct?
Yep, if my stopwatch was accurate.
And for those who want to know about the other Bendigo boys.
Archer Day-Wicks took out his heat in 6 minutes and 33 seconds, Jobe Shanahan ran 6 minutes and 40 seconds (which I think was basically what Jack Whitlock ran) and James Barrat ran 6 minutes and 53 seconds.

Not sure on what grounds the AFL could step in tbh
Not like they can say "Sorry, that's too much to pay for Graham, he's shit, no deal"
And if they object to us walking baker to the psd, then they're effectively saying the psd shouldn't exist. Except it does.....
Paying Graham enough for band 1 is not enough for us to get Baker for free .

Pick 2 for Graham and Baker?

**** that its not let's all bend over backwards to help Richmond month

Why are we trying to appease Richmond? Graham sucks, Baker should be pick 26 + one of culley or chesser take it or leave it. Tigers won 3 flags in 4 years they don't need a leg up.

Rotham deserves to be delisted not exploited for band 1 compo ffs.

How much attention do the clubs really pay to the draft combine?

Quite a lot actually.

In an even year such as this one, combine results can become what steers final decisions in the make up of club draft boards.

They are a valuable piece of data in assessing potential ceiling, based off various biometric models.

They can also provide some evidence of the work ethic of the prospect - high endurance results, or indeed large improvements from previous tests, are indicative of hard work that entails a high degree of dedication that should transfer well into a professional environment.

Further to this, but just as importantly, the combine provides a valuable insight into the psychology of prospects - their competitiveness, demeanour when placed outside of comfort zones, how they handle all the egos and cameras.

Clubs aren't able to conduct their own physical testing (officially, they aren't even allowed to ask about weight anymore), so the combine becomes an important piece of evidentiary information to backup or counter opinions that have been formed through match-watching and interviews.

It's no more idiotic than paying band 1 salary to Graham
Norf got pick 3 as compensation for that spud Mackay last year. He'd never won a F&B in all the years he was the there.
He got a deal that was hugely front ended to make him look like a huge loss to Norf.
Why shouldn't we get similar compensation for a package that includes Rotham and Witherden

How much attention do the clubs really pay to the draft combine?
Depends if a player is a fringe option or not.
For Bendigo I don't think it will matter for Travaglia, Shanahan and Barrat who are now all well entrenched options.
And Day-Wicks running a 6 minute and 33 second 2 km trial is great because he should excel at the sprint, agility and vertical and running jump. So he may be pushed up draft calculations slightly but we're talking a few spots, not whole rounds.

Saints have a big whinge and are stuck in mediocrity so the AFL decided to gift them pick 8. Now they have to give everyone else band 1 or 2 that are comparable.
Amateur hour. Should be no compo picks before end of round 2. First two rounds should be protected. Draft is meant to be an equalisation method but it's broken at this point.

I liked someone else’s suggestion of getting to prelist one academy/FS player a year and the rest are free game. If teams want more then one of their academy prospects then DRAFT them.
Protect the first two rounds of the draft from academy and compo picks.

West Coast clearly have to improve their team defence. It looks like steps are being taken to improve the midfield structure bringing in more defensive minded mids. But if McQualter wants pressure across the field he will need at least 3 aggressive small fwds to do this, because if the opponent can get easy rebound off half back the whole defensive system falls apart. The problem is outside of Long, the West Coast forwards are incapable of putting that pressure on consistently throughout a game.

So for the 3 small fwd spots they are picking from - Long, Cripps, Brockman, Petch, Rawlinson and maybe Champion. That group will struggle to defend the forward 50. Mids like Kelly, Reid, Hewett will spend time fwd but there is no defence with them. And there will be one spot for a midsized forward which Dewar, Hutchinson and Ryan will be competing for alongside the 3 talls.

Trading Ryan out is the way to go. Last year Carlton offered a pick that would of given West Coast Cooper Simpson. This is the option West Coast need to go for this year. Trade Ryan and use the pick on a quick aggressive hard working small fwd. Make defence a non-negotiable and mold young forwards into a competitive unit.

You would also look at the fact that Ryan putting up some awful efforts at the end of the season under Schofield someone he has a past relationship with. So if he won't compete for Schofield what chance has McQualter got of getting anything out of him.
