We steak knived ourselves in the foot this year by coughing up #3. Had we taken FOS/Draper and gone into next year with Harley and FOS/Draper, coughing up our first would have been palatable. Now we could go 2 years without grabbing a top 5 selection. That's a concern.
If the word that the draft isnt that top heavy anyway this year is correct, we probably were better off splitting 3 regardless.
Shame its 12 instead of 6-8 but splitting is probably the right choice.
Next year is probably the year to use a top 5 pick, but we will be chasing Warner, whether we like it not its happening.
No point keeping a top pick that will have to go to Sydney anyway

Sucks but it is what it is now

They do realise those premierships were because of Dusty, Reiwoldt, Lynch and Rance right?
Clarke actually doesn't. After those dudes and Bolton, there were an awful lot of late picks and rookie picks. You can build aside with this - as long as you have Dusty, Cotch, Reiwoldt and co. He thinks he can come into the Eagles and build a team by trading in soldiers.

Been here for years and have never seen proof that he works in recruiting, hilarious that everyone goes along with it.

We won't know the end result of the trade week for years, have to just hope that we get a best 22 player at 12, preferably a mid. As a club we're way too nice though, pick 14 for an ooc Baker is definitely overs, I don't care that we made assurances to him, have to look after the club first.

Any desisted free agents we could be after?

Wouldn't mind Jack Carroll but he probably gets another contract with Kennedy going.

Jaxon prior another one I wouldnt mind going after but has been linked to essendon.

DGB?
I reckon you’ll be right with Carroll.

Prior sounds like will get an invite to train with the Bombers. You’d think we would ask the question too.

Parfitt could be one but sounds like Clarke is happy with Graham and Baker additions so not sure he goes down that route.

They probably look for KPD this way. So they’ll ask Trey Ruscue, maybe Baldwin?

He actually wasn’t keen on the Curtin train. Given it was pretty obvious early on that Barrass was going to leave that explains the Busslinger love.
There is no chance that someone has inner sanctum access and is posting here. I can't believe how many people on here are, "what do you think, Phil?". Every year he comes out and say Harley or some other gun isn't very good and we should split so we can get Curtain or Busslinger.

Woww thank **** Sydney lost. There's no way Warner is worth Two firsts, which let's be honest will be top 3 picks and a second rounder?!

****ing Tim Kelly 2.0, but on steroids given we are rising from the bottom of a closet clean..

That's who got us into this mess to begin with.

Had they done at the end of 2021 what the tigers are doing now we would have got draft capital for players. Think about what Cripps, darling, Kennedy, barrass, gaff, Sheed, Duggan, were worth then. I'm not saying we should've got rid of all of them but sure as hell we should've traded a few of them.

I think it’s a quite different situation. A lot of those guys are WA natives and had/have young families here. Very few of them would have wanted to be traded, even if it was the best thing for the club.

. Would've preferred around late teensish but we didn't have that pick and couldn't manufacture a deal to get that, so we paid what we had for reasons mentioned above.

This.

The pick number doesn't matter, it all comes down to what you can actually offer.

And ours was the link via Hawks/Barrass/14.

If Hawks 1st was 10, that would have been the value, if it was 19 then that would have been the number.

It's all well and good valuing a guy you are trading in at a number if you can't actually access that pick.

The trade value of players is meaningless and we have seen this with Rioli -> 6, Baker -> 14, Smith -> 17, none of it makes sense if you look objectively, but you can only trade what you have (or can get easily)

I think there's a gap at about 6/7/8. We need to be inside that. Get Smith/FOS/Draper and we have a high chance of getting a classy A grade player. Then Lalor/Langford/Smillie, slightly less but still a high percentage play. Go much lower than that, then the chance reduce. And I think there's a massive difference between Bo Allen and the first 3 I mentioned. 3 to 6 = not much difference. 3 to 12. Super risky. It's like dropping from 80% chance to 20% chance. You have to find those elite players, and more often than not, they are in the top 5. If we go Warner next year, how many more chances will we get?

Without Phil our only 'insider' is Bond "Much happening in that space - stay tuned..." 007

I couldn't care less if Phil is legit or not (I think he is fwiw) but his posts are like a light at the end of a long dark tunnel full of cyclical arguments, bedwetting and melts.

No way, Phil is LEGIT. This forum will be a far less enjoyable place when he finally decides that being a master drafter and accumulating Bigfooty reactions just isn't worth missing out on Thai MILFs any longer.

We didn't know Barrass was going to leave in the Bussy draft. I wanted to trade him and was disappointed that it looked impossible.

Reflecting on it the Barrass deal is really a pretty good outcome. Next year will be a points-dominated draft (including for us) and on that front what it ended up as is an absolute mile better than an F1 and a F1/F2 swap. It's also clearly better than what was likely to happen before Hawthorn traded 14.

The draft could go a thousand ways but the chances that whoever we get + Baker will be better over the journey are at least okay. It is by no means "worst of all time" territory - it quite possibly won't even be in the ballpark of the Kelly trade. We could have done a little better out of it but the odds of pick 3 in particular transforming our club were very, very low.

Mmm with the benifit of hindsight, I would have the Kelly trade as worse off (we blew 3 picks and a future 1 which has contributed to the mess we are in now).

At least we still have a lot of value next year, and bought in some mature bodies and still have a R1 pick
Nah Kelly is way better than Baker and they were all later 1sts and 2nds .

We traded out pick 3 . ****ING PICK 3 to secure Baker FFS .

Then paid more for Baker than bailey Smith who is twice the player Baker is and 3 years younger .

Total cluster ****

So what is our best 22 for next year?

FB: Duggan, Edwards, Hough
HB: Ginbey, Gov, Baker
C: Hunt, Yeo, Hewett
HF: Graham, Allen, Cripps
FF: Owies, Waterman, Ryan
FOL: Flynn? Kelly, Reid

IC: Long, Cole?, JWilliams, Pick 12

EMG: Hutchinson, HJohnston, Bazzo, Chesser, Maric
FB: Bazzo Edwards Hough
HB: Duggan McGovern Ginbey
C: Hunt Yeo Maric
HF: Hewett Waterman Baker
FF: Long O Allen Ryan
R: B Williams H Reid Kelly
INT: J Williams Graham Dewar Hutchinson Owies
EMG: Cripps Cole Johnston Petruccelle Hall A Reid Chesser Flynn

Playing Bazzo cos we need to develop him in case Gov or Harry goes down.

Clarke on 6PR saying that pick 12 would be equivalent to 7 or 8 in any other draft. Whether that’s an excuse or not gives some context to the thought process

Edit: also means we paid extra overs for baker lol

So pick 3 was equivalent to pick 1 then...

Twice in three years when we've split picks we've had these morons front the media mumbling some shit about the top 20 being all about the same. Have a look at our top five drafting history, its a who's who of club if not AFL legends. It's an absolute cop out and indictment on your ability to identify talent when you spout that crap.
The top 6 or so from this year is significantly better than the next tier. Lalor, Draper, Smith, FOS, Reid, Langford Smillie are leagues ahead of the next tiers. Got to hope like hell that Melbourne and Richmond load up on talls and hope that Lindsay or Tobie are available at 12 massive balls up by list management.

Yet warner will likely place top 5 in the Brownlow and his worth will only go up, not down. 2 first now would've been palatable, next year will be more
