Likely future 4th for Darling.
Not that keen on a future fourth. Much prefer a 2024 R4 which is currently 58.

Gunston was seen as cooked 2 years ago and he had half a decent season at Brisbane (17 games) and was serviceable for the Hawks this year (18 games). Sometimes it just needs a new club and a specific role.

Darling has proven to be physically durable having played over 20 games each year for the last 4. I sense we have not understood the impact of him and JK as a tandem and then with Oscar not on the park for big chunks of the year and limited inside 50's, his output has suffered.

If it is a F4, I would like to see added to it Norf and us swapping R3 - where we give up F3 and get Norf's R3 this year which is currently 40. Surely Norf do not need high volumes of yuff this year!!

GWS also tried him as a key forward and cut their losses after one year with him.

That speaks volumes
Not saying he would have made it as I'm not sure he had the right mentality, he wasn't given the opportunity to develop properly in that role.

He was a mistake, there's no doubt about that. It's had long lasting repercussions.

If we'd come out of that draft with Kelly in his place instead of him, a lot of our future issues would have been resolved.

I'm suprised that Jack wants to take his family over to Melb to play for the Roos. I would have thought the straight bat play of seeing out his last year with us, getting 300 games and retiring next year is a pretty good way to go. He must think he's got a good few years left in himself. I personally think he's cooked.

People need to get over Brander. Sometimes first round picks don't work out. It's not an exact science, no one can tell the future. Move on.

Because paying $200,000 is better than paying $800,000 for a WAFL player.
Don't be surprised if the Allen and Waterman contracts are also very heavily front loaded, leaving more room to give Harley a huge contract extension.
When we are going to have to work hard to even pay our floor, I don’t think the above really turns the needle much.

If that pick 58 turns into a pick 40ish, then we’re cooking

I'll start the negotiations.

Along with Rawlings who should have overruled The Pieman and taken Worpel instead of Ainsworth.

24th November wind back

13 Oscar (who went 1t 21)
21 Kelly (who went at 24)
24 Ryan (who went at 26)
26 Taylor (who went at 28)
32 Worpel (who went at 45) instead of Ainsworth

This was our sliding door moment. Yes we won a flag the following year but Ryan was the only one who was in the GF side.

Wonder what his career would have been like if we'd bulked him up and just played him as a key forward.

With respect to the Sunraysia Football and Netball League, he didn’t have the heart or drive to play football. Thought he’d made it the day he was drafted, didn’t do the work, didn’t have the ticker.

I guess in that hypothetical the question would be who'd Geelong take with the pick they took Kelly with. Ryan is possibility as they took Kelly knowing we were supposedly keen to get him.

Yeah, our development has left a lot to be desired over the years as well.
Would say there was a reason the "best" key position player in the draft slipped to pick 13 though, we just didn't see it and muffed the pick. Can almost guarantee our original plan in that draft was to go Oscar Allen at 13, Tim Kelly at 21 and Ryan next. Could have got Sam Taylor with the pick we ended up taking Ryan at. Shame we didn't stick to that plan.
Not sure Taylor could've contributed to the 2018 flag, Ryan did.

Basically the same with what we did with Petrie and Mitchell, on field leadership and then coaching.

I personally think he'll be good for North and North fans will ultimately be satisfied with it.

It may or may not work out well, but you have to try something when what you are currently doing isn't working.

Massive sliding doors moment but odds are we wouldn't have Harley if it went that way so we just need to hope that he sticks around for the long haul and that the next push is more fruitful

If I were head of drafting I’d simply get all of the late value and nail them with our picks.
