I have no issue with it but I just want the club losing the player to put the price for the player.
Example is Dangerfield leaving the crows at a young age I think Adelaide should be able to demand a top 5 pick. And make the destination club have to pay for them.

But that just makes it harder again for rebuilding teams, who get their picks pushed back further(like us) because a player wanted to move.

Realistically, they need to take control back from the players and simply let the clubs trade against their consent so they can fob them off a year early if they won't resign past FA.

I like an open system. If we have a player who is at FA then we decide the price not the AFL. If we have Harley Reid wanting to leave then we should be able to say we want 2 picks in the top 10 and he has our blessing. But he ain’t just going because he is a FA and we get screwed all the time we have put into him.

has impressed in the 2km time trial, finishing equal third in a strong start to the AFL Draft Combine in Melbourne.

Hayes registered a time of 6min. 18sec. alongside South Australian defender Angus Clarke, with Sydney Academy prospect Joel Cochran first with a good time of 6:05 at Collingwood’s AIA Centre.

Bendigo Pioneers star Tobie Travaglia was second with 6:13 to boost his chances of being one of the first names called out this year.


Hayes’ Tigers teammate Hamish Davis also put in a strong effort to finish, while fellow Claremont premiership star Cody Angove ran it in 6:28 to round out the best of the West Australians.

A total of 10 West Australian AFL draft hopefuls flew to Melbourne on Thursday to be put through the three-days of testing and interviews ahead of the draft in November.

Claremont defender Clancy Dennis was the only one who will not do any of the physical testing because of a foot injury he picked up in the colts grand final late last month.

More interviews with clubs will be held on Saturday before the vertical jump, running vertical jump, 20m sprint and agility test take place on Sunday.

Hayes and Angove as well as South Fremantle’s Jaxon Artemis will also be looking to impress in the 20m sprint later this weekend.

It comes as West Coast next generation academy product Malakai Champion revealed he was yet to be told by the Eagles if they would be drafting him.

Changes to the rules mean the Eagles can match bids on Champion at any time in this year’s draft rather than only after pick No.40 — a rule which had them miss out on Lance Collard last year after he was selected by the Saints with pick No.28.

Champion, who kicked three goals on WAFL league debut for Subiaco against West Coast, said he was unsure if he would be at Mineral Resources Park next year despite the club having first access.

“No indication from West Coast at all. I met with them early in the year,” Champion told AFL.com.au.

“I met with eight clubs during the speed dates with the academy.

“We had another speed date at WA where I met with another three. I met with three other clubs after, so it’s about 14 clubs total now.”

But if I have a superstar who is a FA then my club should be able to demand what he is worth. If that’s pick 1 then so be it.

I think you nominate for the draft and you say my preference is to play for West Coast and my second preference is to play for Essendon.
If neither of those clubs want you then you have to go where you get chosen.

Looks like the saints are getting overcompensated. The club of the departing player should only get the same number pick
that was used to draft that player originally.

Get rid of compensation for FA. Player has served his time at the club which drafted him and he can now choose where he plays.

Crack down hard on draft tempering. No more "I don't want to leave Vic" shenanigans.

Allow clubs access to NGA talent outside of the draft pool. Something like 1 kid per year can be taken out of a clubs NGA and directly onto an AFL list.
