AFL retirements and delistings

Latest news and rumours:

  • Zane Trew, Jamaine Jones and Jordyn Baker delisted

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Sept 11 Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

He is an idiot. I have a player who wants to leave then I should be able to get his value back.
But that just makes it harder again for rebuilding teams, who get their picks pushed back further(like us) because a player wanted to move.

Realistically, they need to take control back from the players and simply let the clubs trade against their consent so they can fob them off a year early if they won't resign past FA.

All theyve gotta do it adjust the FA compo on a year to year basis. Clearly Battle is a band2/3 player, so they should take what Battles contract is, at 850k over however many years, and make that equal band 2/3 whichever.

There will be a geniune A-grader moving club at some point who will fetch the same compo as a solid B grader like Battle or Perryman

Having a set formula doesnt work, needs some subjectivity on a year to year basis imo

I like an open system. If we have a player who is at FA then we decide the price not the AFL. If we have Harley Reid wanting to leave then we should be able to say we want 2 picks in the top 10 and he has our blessing. But he ain’t just going because he is a FA and we get screwed all the time we have put into him.

My boy Will Hayes showed out today if we can pick him up around 61 will be very happy

One of the very best kicks in the draft I actually rate his kicking better than Berry's

He and Hamish would be a great combination

Claremont trio Will Hayes, Cody Angove, Hamish Davis impress in 2km time trial at AFL Draft Combine

Claremont wingman Will Hayes has impressed in the 2km time trial, finishing equal third in a strong start to the AFL Draft Combine in Melbourne.

Hayes registered a time of 6min. 18sec. alongside South Australian defender Angus Clarke, with Sydney Academy prospect Joel Cochran first with a good time of 6:05 at Collingwood’s AIA Centre.

Bendigo Pioneers star Tobie Travaglia was second with 6:13 to boost his chances of being one of the first names called out this year.

Hayes’ Tigers teammate Hamish Davis also put in a strong effort to finish, while fellow Claremont premiership star Cody Angove ran it in 6:28 to round out the best of the West Australians.

A total of 10 West Australian AFL draft hopefuls flew to Melbourne on Thursday to be put through the three-days of testing and interviews ahead of the draft in November.

Claremont defender Clancy Dennis was the only one who will not do any of the physical testing because of a foot injury he picked up in the colts grand final late last month.

More interviews with clubs will be held on Saturday before the vertical jump, running vertical jump, 20m sprint and agility test take place on Sunday.

Hayes and Angove as well as South Fremantle’s Jaxon Artemis will also be looking to impress in the 20m sprint later this weekend.

It comes as West Coast next generation academy product Malakai Champion revealed he was yet to be told by the Eagles if they would be drafting him.

Changes to the rules mean the Eagles can match bids on Champion at any time in this year’s draft rather than only after pick No.40 — a rule which had them miss out on Lance Collard last year after he was selected by the Saints with pick No.28.

Champion, who kicked three goals on WAFL league debut for Subiaco against West Coast, said he was unsure if he would be at Mineral Resources Park next year despite the club having first access.

“No indication from West Coast at all. I met with them early in the year,” Champion told AFL.com.au.

“I met with eight clubs during the speed dates with the academy.

“We had another speed date at WA where I met with another three. I met with three other clubs after, so it’s about 14 clubs total now.”

I don't mind if the AFL set the price HOWEVER the price needs to be met by the Club that the FA goes to, NOT by the AFL throwing in another pick.

Such as Battle being deemed by the AFL as pick 8 then the Hawks have to pony up the draft capital to get him.
With a caveat on any first round grade placed on a player the the Receiving Club has to either have a first rounder themselves OR have to trade for one, after the first round, then any picks can be forfeited from any place in the draft order.

That way the receiving Club doesn't get a free hit and compromise the draft order as much as it happens now.

But if I have a superstar who is a FA then my club should be able to demand what he is worth. If that’s pick 1 then so be it.
Currently the AFL are saying that superstar is not worth much. They should have no say.

Well then the Clubs wont get many trades done so the AFLPA, will bitch and moan and the AFL will get involved.

I am not saying that I agree with it but you need to look just why the AFL agreed to FA in the first place, its was an ALFPA initiative to allow player to leave to go to their Club of choice as a reward for services rendered.

Yes I know, so I think then just give them the choice to play for who you want right at the start.

Oh then thats a completely different topic.... but as a Western Australian who follows West Coast I do love that idea :yellowheart::blueheart:

I think you nominate for the draft and you say my preference is to play for West Coast and my second preference is to play for Essendon.
If neither of those clubs want you then you have to go where you get chosen.

I wouldn't care tbh, the sooner they make it a level playing field the better. I'd get rid of the FS rule and NGA tomorrow if I could too
NGA is another system brought in with great intention that works about as well as my dad's back in the cold.

IE - It doesn't.

Looks like the saints are getting overcompensated. The club of the departing player should only get the same number pick
that was used to draft that player originally.
