That's right... because a 2xAA and BnF winner is pretty much just as good as a rookie.

I mean... why the * did we ever draft him the first place?

I can't believe I'm defending Gaff, given that I've never been a huge fan. But * me, some of the stupidity that is being posted here...

Settle down luv.

Gee, absolutely nobody is saying Gaff wasn't a very good player back in the day. If you honestly need that explainied to you, perhaps bigfooty discussions and shitposting isn't your thing

How long do you want to hang onto past achievements for? Sounds eerily similar to Simmos credits doesn't it?

Gaff was once a totally different player to how he is now. Even as recently as 2019 he was in amazing form and one of, if not our beat player. Certainly that finals series.

However, it's been a steady decline since that point, either due to age, injuries, desire, I'm not sure. So we're now at the point where he justifiably gets talked about like this.

If you don't think I know he's already a club great you've got rocks in your head. But my point stands. It'll be an interesting year watching him because his 2022 was eyebrow raisingly bad, and we're about to enter a rebuild, in case you haven't noticed?

We just came off the worst season in club history this year, backing up the worst 2nd half season in club history in 2021. No senior player should be automatically safe from criticism.

It's so frustrating their attitude to him. It feels like he used to do a bit of onball work so they were happy to give him a huge contract as an inside/outside mid. Then they played him there more often, as they were paying him so much.

I really don't think so. List management and contracts are kept separate from the coaches, and for good reason. I'd be surprised if any coach played a player in a particular position because of the money they earn.

Gaff played in the midfield last season because we were ravaged by injuries, and the coaching staff didn't want to throw young kids to the wolves. Maybe they were right and maybe they were wrong. But I'd be almost certain it had nothing to do with the salary Gaff earns.

It was noticeable that as soon as Culley started playing, Gaff rarely attended CBDs.

I cant see yeo lasting till 2024.

Banged up body and all that.

Probably worth a rookie spot.
Included the article below:
A Port Adelaide player touted as a potential West Coast trade target this off-season has been de-listed, and is now a chance to become an Eagle for free.
Martin Frederick, the twin brother of Fremantle speedster Michael, had been linked to the Eagles during the trade period as part of the deal that sent Junior Rioli to Port.
But the 22-year-old can now be snapped up in the rookie draft, should he nominate, with Port electing not to renew his contract.
Frederick played 14 games in two seasons for the Power and was one of only two players culled in the club’s latest round of de-listings.
Dylan Williams was also cut, but the Power have committed to re-drafting him.
The Eagles have pick two in this year’s rookie draft, with only North Melbourne to select ahead of them. They could also offer Frederick a spot as a train-on with an eye to recruiting him through the pre-season supplemental selection period.
The West Australian understands four other clubs have enquired about the dashing half-back’s services.
The Eagles and Power were instead engaged in a high-profile four-way mega trade to get Rioli to Alberton as well as North’s Jason Horne-Francis.
This year’s No.1 pick changed hands and headed to Greater Western Sydney in the same deal.
Power list boss Jason Cripps said Frederick’s inconsistent performances led to him losing his spot on the list.
“Marty is a much loved player at our club who came through our Next Generation Academy program,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we have reached the time of the year where we have to make tough decisions regarding the future of our list.
“After four years on our list, Marty was unable to establish himself as a consistent performer within our AFL team and we have had to make the difficult decision not to offer him a contract moving forward.
“We wish Marty all the best for the future and he will always be welcome here at Port Adelaide.”
Jed McEntee and Trent Dumont have had their contracts renewed for one year at the club.

I think the Freo Freddie is a bit of a headless chook, that does something good 1 out of 4 times. A bit like Petrol.

His brother sounds worse. I'm not keen.

2021 yes. 2022 he was much improved and more consistent.

I was trying to say that it's the perception that money reinforces that's the problem. They paid him big money because they thought he could play onball, then they've been backing that view in to justify the decision.

It was only rumour, but someone on here claimed Knights didn't rate Gaff and wanted him dropped, but Simmo wouldn't allow it. It was interesting to see that they eventually accepted change and started playing him outside in the last third of the season.

I felt a lot of that was more to do with the team improving around him. I didn't watch a lot of Freo games, but he was still doing a few silly things when I saw him. Looks like the type of guy that might give you 2 or 3 goals but also 3 or 4 horrendous turnovers a game as well.

Do I take it we only have 4 list spots available?

* main list
Assuming Hurn had/will sign on for one last rodeo, then it’s either 4 or 5 spots depending on whether Witherden has a contract for next year or not

When he signed on initially it was reported as a 2 year deal (so ending this year) and there’s been no mention since of any extension. Yet, he’s not been delisted and there’s indications in some media he’d still on the list

If he is contracted and we want a 5th list spot there’s more than one candidate to be moved from the main list to the rookie list. We currently have 3 rookie spots open

The futures up Winder, West and Trew remain up in the air
