I am sorry, but that is absolutely false

As someone with contacts out that way at Woodville West Torrens (Phillipous club), he is VERY much on the Adelaide teams radar. If Port hadn't been so desperate to get JHF, he almost certainly would have been their first pick at 8

They have been into him for a long time

Ummm I think they were into Dunkley with Pick 8 ..

Seems relevant: in the board’s mock draft I’m picking for WCE and I took Phillipou (over Ginbey and McKenzie) and then Hewett. Here’s my reasoning:

West Coast - Pick 9 - Mattaes Phillipou - South Australia/Woodville-West Torrens - mid/forward - 192cm/89kg

Description from Rookieme: “A well-rounded forward/midfielder in the mould of Nat Fyfe and Patrick Dangerfield, Mattaes Phillipou’s aerial ability and scoreboard impact make him South Australia’s highest rated draft prospect."

He was seeming like a chance to be this year's bolter but had back issues and an ankle injury during the championships, although there was a suggestion that one or both of the SA clubs were trying to hide him. At 192cm with agility and athleticism he could be the Bontempelli or Fyfe, making him potentially the BBIMWBLF.

West Coast - Pick 13 - Elijah Hewett - Western Australia/Swan Districts - midfielder - 185cm/84kg

Description from Knightmare: "Hewett is a strong contested ball-winning mid whose power when exiting stoppages is notable".

He was seeming like a top-5 pick earlier but some quiet games during the Championships and in the seniors with Swan Districts lowered his stock a bit. Reportedly he had Covid and some lingering effects. That aside, he appeals as a ready-made midfielder who could play AFL straight away.

My strategy with these picks, after the club split 2, was to take one safe choice and one risk. Phillipou was the most enticing of the risky picks, he could definitely be a Bontempelli and give us the top-five AFL midfielder we haven't had for years, and I was pretty sure he wouldn't be around at my second pick. Whereas I was confident that Hewett and/or Ginbey would still be there. If they'd both been there it would have been a tough decision. Hewett is a low-risk pick who I liken to Sheed, not so much in playing style but in the fact that he can come straight in and contribute and will probably end up a 200-game player.

I can't remember who asked, I did consider McKenzie over Phillipou but ultimately I thought Phillipou's ceiling was higher.

Then I took Darcy Jones and Ed Allan.

Great WA draft. I'd have found it very hard to pass up the ultra-safe pick in Cam MacKenzie, but I take your point about there being good safe options at 13, so worth a swing at Phillipou.

This is also part of my thinking. We're a conservative club, I daresay, especially at this stage of our rebuild, we'll go for the safest pick.

If Mackenzie slips to 8 we should take him.
I think Mackenzie would complement Culley well. Is a balanced midfielder who wins his own contested ball however is better at receiving and delivering the ball. Culley dishes to Mackenzie who then hits Allen on the tit.
Then take a punt at 12 on Poo / Ginbey if still there IMO

Both SA teams aren’t interested in the local Poo boy and you would think they would know if he’s the Future Bont ..

Not at all.
I know BOTH SA teams rated him highly, but had better targets in Rankine and Sooky.
ALWAYS go a sure proven player at AFL than a kid…. That’s just common sense.

Phillipou is rated around the 8- 15 mark on most Clubs boards.

All this “dissing on him” is starting to give me the shits.
Sure he isn’t top 2, but he is very much in top ten contention.

For what it’s worth I don’t think he willl be like Bont …. For me if it all clicks, for him… then more like Fyfe … if he gets to be 80 % of where I think he can be then P Cripps not as good at contested possession but will kick a heap more goals.
One from the past I see him playing ( once he stops growing and matures at 24 / 25 ish. )….. then like Jobe Watson.

Please note player referenced above are : PLAYS LIKE not AS GOOD AS.
If the good as, did eventuate then , it’s beers 🍻 all round.

Nah, the fact they prioritized getting last year’s pick 1 and the pick 3 from a couple of years before that is proof they clearly don’t rate him.

Well said Monocle!

I think lots of people, including me early days see the name linked to the player and then expect them to turn out like that players. Where in fact, its more they play like or have traits like x player.

I'm hoping we take Phillipou, at 8 he could end up being an absolute steal in years to come.

Exact type of player we need, dangerous on the inside and out, go forward and kick goals and heaps of potential growth left.

Anybody can turn out to be a gun but I think picking people with elite skills is a better start.Isn’t Busslinger very much like Basso??
I think we would pick Phillipou if he’s there. WC like talent above all else. Grunt is good but it’s my belief that it’s easier to add grunt to a skilful player than it is to add skill to a grunt.

So we having discussions with GWS about trading ports future second for either 15, 18 or 19 this year if they player we want is sitting there?

Surely gws would love to push one of their million picks this year to next. Moving off port (maybe pick 27 off next year) for a player who we want this year makes sense.

Really hope we are. Some nice players around those picks. :thumbsu: :)

Really? Poulter delisted. Wow.

That is a shock.

Wonder what we don't know?
From what I gathered from the pies board it sounds like he is a bit like brander .

Tall but timid , not that good overhead for a tall mid , poor kick turns it over lots . Not good up forward.

Also something about being an instgram figjam who is in love with himself

I don't have insta so no idea what he posts

Pies traded their future 1st which ended up pick 2 to get him and other picks so to refuse to play him all year and then flick him there must be a problem .

Maybe going home to SA and getting a chance at the power or crows may get him to pull his finger out .

Alec Waterman delisted at Essendon, no surprises there.

No the Eagles shouldn't pick him up, we already have one Waterman who struggles to make an impact at AFL level as a forward and we don't need a spare.

Phillipou and Culley, two 190cm+ bulls who can hit the scoreboard. I like it

Throw in Gibney or Hustwaite and I will be really excited

I just feel The Poo is massively overrated on this board (flavour of the month) and if he was as good as everyone is suggesting (THE BONT!), then he'd be a Pick 1 contender, rather than a potential at 8 or even 12.
But the Bont was considered a Pick 1 contender in his draft year either

Monocle WCE_phil what are your thoughts on Hewitt? To me (and I am no expert) spending picks 8 or 12 on him seems like a reach

Hewett is a top 10 talent who has had some issues this year. Mind you if he was playing WAFL colts all season he would have been absolutely dominant.

Didn't interview great at the combine and is definitely down on fitness/application this year imo. He gets marked down by a lot because of his dominance last year yet it didn't seem to translate to the higher level as much as expected.

There are also rumours of outside issues however I have no proof of this and he interviewed well. Did give body impressions and slight reads about wanting to stay in WA when I was in the interview. It's why I think he potentially drops. I don't think GWS draft him and think one of Sydney's picks is locked in for Hustwaite so he could genuinely get past the first round. Sydney really have no fear of player retention mind you. If Sydney take someone other than Hustwaite with their first I think he's safe for our 3rd pick.

Also will say it again but don't rate Ginbey. That athletic profile combined with low production says to me low footy IQ and it's hard to build. He could be a tagger and defensive mid in the middle for a few years and build it, like yeo but it's a big question mark on him for me. Otherwise i'd be happy with him. He's not in my 5 picks for either 8 or 12.

If Busslinger gets past Geelong and Mackenzie is Taken I would go Busslinger, Philippou and then Hewett at 20.

Yeah, they generally weren't at all upset about him going.
