Just a question Mr Monocle.
If we get Dewar and Baker as Cat B's we can't actually play them until they are on the rookie or main list right? Or did that restraint get removed?

No restraint anymore. If they’re good enough they can play

Suns probably won't be using Pick 45 this year. Next year we should have 2 picks in the 40's. I'm hoping Rohan will pull the trigger and trade our latter pick in 2023 40s if someone like Kaleb Smith happens to slip through. Might get to our rookie draft but might not.
We could've just held onto our original 3rd round pick which was higher at pick 40.
IIRC trading 3rds with Port had nothing to do with the trade of 2 for 8 & 12, and trading Willie to Port for their future 2nd.
Imo we should've gotten Port's future 3rd without having to give up pick 40 as a sweetener to only receiving 8 & 12 for pick 2.
So we would be trading it for a lower pick than we originally had (not that it matters much since there's only 5 picks difference).
Surely reversing the decision to bank our 3rd rounder would only be worth it to snap up a slider.
Either way I don't think we should be reaching for players that we originally rated as only worth a rookie pick.

Just read your question and Keys has answered it in a post above.

Thanks Keys for the clarification. :thumbsu:

One of our posters Dylan82 has some connections with some Brisbane Lions people. It's regarding the 2021 draft.
I'll copy and paste his post from last December.

"Sorry, I missed this one earlier.

Actually had a catch-up on the morning of the rookie draft. Its purpose was primarily to get numbers for scraping together a couple of groups for the Alpine Classic in January (not really keen on spending 9-10 hours on a bike for 250km with over 5000m of climbing involved to be honest), but obviously with the timing some football banter was had as well.

Didn't stay too long as I had to keep up the illusion to my employer that I was actually working remotely, but some points that may be of interest are the following:
  • If Chesser were available at 16, Brisbane would have taken him.
  • Brisbane tried to trade up their pick 20 for Sydney's 18 in order to get ahead of Melbourne as they wanted Van Rooyen, but Swans were not convinced that Melbourne would leave Sheldrick if he were available. Appeared to be some salt at the Swans that it may have been pre-agreed but not honoured on the night.
  • Lions see Chesser as a ready-made draftee that could take a first-team place off half-back in his first year before taking on greater midfield responsibilities after that.
  • Brisbane tried to upgrade their pick 41 for one of Richmond's 28, 29, 30 specifically to get ahead of West Coast at 31, who they (correctly) expected would be after Hough, a player they had flagged. Tigers demanded a future first round pick, so the deal never happened. Lions see potential for Hough to become a Stringer / DeGoey type.
  • The consensus was that West Coast absolutely smoked the draft this year.

Expectation is that season 2022 will see improvement from both Richmond and West Coast after having a full offseason in adapting their defences to counter the change to the on the mark rule. Also expected that 2022 will be a very even and cut-throat season, with few clubs on the wane, but many on the rise.

I got the impression that West Coast (and similarly with Richmond) are seen as a dark horse - not considered in the contending group, but nobody wants to be up against them if they have a full list and rediscover their mojo.

More specifically, some early calls for 2022 were the following:
  • Melbourne was unanimously picked to finish the season on top of the ladder.
  • Bontempelli was favourite for the Brownlow, followed closely by Walsh.
  • Daicos a clear favourite for the Rising Star.
  • Carlton to be the surprise of the season and finish inside the top 8."
Hough becoming a stringer/degoey type? I don't see that at all.

It does look like we may have done well from 2021 draft. If Chesser, Hough and Bazzo become B22 then that's a great strike rate. Still have to see what Williams can do.

So according to Twomey’s phantom draft Busslinger and Hollands will be gone by our second. Assuming we know we will get Hewett at our third (a big if I know), is there anyone else we would want other than Allan or Jefferson?

I’d just take Hewett. He will not get through to our 2nd imo

We’d be better off taking Hewett with our 2nd pick.
George at our 3rd and finish with Burgiel

Agree I don’t think there’s a huge benefit in leaving Hewett unless we have huge belief in Allan or Jefferson. Other guys around the mark like Weddle, Konstanty, Cowan wouldn’t be that much better than the talent available in the 20s. Plus they dont fill a strong list need.

I am far from convinced that Jones ( 175 cm 63 kg ) will make it, if his size doesn't worry you.... it should.
He is s very speculative pick and I would only be "semi OK ish" with taking him at 26... IF.... we had already nailed the previous three selections.
Just cant see the featherweight making it as a midfielder ... quick yes he is..... but the kids just so light, he maybe has some small forward application.

However with Dewar ( 185 cm 70 kg ) as a likely NGA pick up I see Jones as a bit of duplication for a small forward role as I cant see him playing as a mid at that weight. Dewar is a much more productive small forward.

Also Baker ( 185 cm 72 kg ) another NGA pick up as an outside mid.

Would love Jones to prove me wrong, BUT I just don't think we are at that point in our rebuild that we can afford to blow a decent pick on such a speculative player.

Agree. Really like Jones for what he has produced so far but can that translate into the big league?

GWS reportedly interested so I am hoping any temptation for us is taken away by another side picking him up.

And yes, both those Cat B guys can play his role.

If Hotton is there at 29 and we dont take him I'll be pretty annoyed. I'd be annoyed if we went Kaleb Smith at 29 TBH.

Szybkowski, Burgiel, J Ryan or K Ryan at 29 I'd be rapt with.

Yikes, you know we're all cooked when we're discussing who Brisbane, not even our own team, MIGHT have taken in last year's draft.

Hardly call our 2022 cooked. I mean, this is exactly what happened:

Expectation is that season 2022 will see improvement from both Richmond and West Coast after having a full offseason in adapting their defences to counter the change to the on the mark rule. Also expected that 2022 will be a very even and cut-throat season, with few clubs on the wane, but many on the rise.

We traded UP to get pick 8 yeah?

It also means most of their work this year will be at the top end, although there is a chance they activate their last selection and use it on night two under the right circumstances. Midfielder Steely Green could be an option and still on the board deep, while Kaleb Smith would be a chance later, although he may be gone by then. Young Victorian ruckman Max Knobel, the son of former player Trent, is one the Eagles have looked at, while at the other end of the spectrum is tough small Blake Drury, who is in the mix if their fifth pick is used.

Must say, I’m pretty impressed by Steely Green’s foot skills in that highlights package. Hit some really nice low darts to leading forwards.

Has a 30 disposal League game to his name this season. Wouldn’t mind him with our last ND selection or a rookie pick. Not sure if he goes earlier (pick 40s range) though.

7 spots left in the player sponsor draft (9 if we take 2 Cat B rookies)

Draft will be generated tonight or tomorrow morning so get in if you are interested

There are question marks obviously transitioning from a 175 cm mid to playing a small fwd role or visa versa but Jones has elite leg speed and fast awareness that he can sum up what is around him to make good decisions ..He provides good run and carry and hits the scoreboard ..
I am open to seeing him drafted whether to WCE or someone else ..

Salacious rumours to get him to slide a bit eh ;)

Heard an interview on SEN with Steely and liked this quote
“I like to get hurt and hurt others”

Heard very few mention of Humphrey on here, other than old horse Monocle not rating his kicking. Guessing that's because nobody thinks he'll be available.

Personally I'd be stoked if he made it to pick 8 and Rohan pulled something random and selected him despite us not being linked to him previously. All comes down to what Hawthorn do i think, and Suns with Ginbey.

Humphrey got some campaigner about him, and despite not being a pure midfielder (he spends a bit of time as an explosive forward) he's still impactful and I'd be confident in his selection, particularly if we add another pure mid with one of our other picks.
