My thoughts on this draft.

I'd say this was a great draft from ROB. I have a feeling he saw what we suggested on BF and saw we were (rightfully) melting at the fact he usually takes KPPs or HBF with midfield potential and not what we actually needed.

The club started to decline around mid 2021 and the 2021 issues continued onto 2022 with injuries and COVID making it worse that I correctly predicted that the club would finish 2-20 for 2022 and only second last due to Norf being worst lol.

With the 2021 Mid Season draft the club should've never taken Will Collins with it's first pick, probably better off using it on West which we took with the second pick. I think West is a serviceable mid and could play a great game if he's full time inside but at this stage he's depth and would be great for the Beagles line up. Regarding taking Collins, it should've never happened in the first place as he's too short to be a KPP, doesn't seem to have pace and doesn't accumulate much footy as a HBF.

2021 was the start of the rebuild we need.
  • Chesser definitely was a very ROB pick, touted as a typical HBF with midfield potential but in reality is a good inside mid (if he did play there for Sandringham) who can win his own ball. Sad to see him get injured this year but hopefully he has an injury free 2023. I can't wait to see him bring, great balanced mid we need for the future if he can stay healthy. Can also provide the pace we need for rebounding.
  • Hough looks great playing for us and he uses the ball nicely and is pretty consistent this year. Would be a great long term replacement for Gaff and can rotate through the flanks.
  • J.Williams: Clearly not ready when sent out against Norf when the team was hammered by injuries and COVID compounded with the 2021 issues following them. However the Beagles were a basketcase side that he didn't even get much opportunities and he also chopped out in the ruck. Would like to see him this year as more of a stay at home forward while Barnett and Jamieson/Williams do all the ruck duties.
  • G.Clark: Great WAFL player but been played out of position for the year like cmon, Gaff on the inside and Clark on the wing??? Still back him though as long the club plays him in the inside but he maybe too slow though. Great depth for the club.
  • H.Dixon, Naish, Strnadica and Joyce were useful SSP depth for 2021 but they can easily be replaced with younger players who have a higher ceiling and potential.
Now to 2022.
  • With the 2022 mid season draft and the club performing soo badly that we got the number one pick and we wisely used it on Culley something the other Vic clubs such as Norf or Essendon weren't happy about. Culley looks great from the limited matches his played in and he's willing to hurt players and stick his tackles. That big bodied mid we needed.
  • The club was always going to take Ginbey although if we were desperate which we don't seem to be then if Gold Coast or Hawthorn really wanted Ginbey but we were desperate for him then there's a possibility the club may trade up which wouldn't make sense in the first place considering that we traded pick 2 down for 8 and 12 and if that happened then me and everyone on BF would be melting hard. My personal preference was Poo that I wanted Gold Coast or Hawthorn to take him so we could have Poo available.
  • However I see Ginbey becoming a gun player for us and could potentially turn into a Danger, Dusty or Cripps type if he works hard and he hasn't reached his ceiling yet or at worst may become an upgraded version of SPP.
  • Hewitt thankfully we got, I wouldn't be happy nor disappointed (leaning more towards disappointed but not melting) if we took Allan. I'd say he maybe a huge steal and I can see him winning a Brownlow or two. I have a feeling we ruined Sydney's plans when we took him because I have a feeling they wanted this guy and saw through him "underperforming".
  • Barnett with Nic Nat nearing the end and Williams and Jamo looks to be under notice. He could be a long term replacement for Nic Nat and his ceiling seems to be higher than Williams or Jamo. Currently listed at 202 cm as I wrote this and I can see growing to 205 - 207 cms. We may have a Dean Cox type if he develops a link up game and improves in his endurance more along with his strength to win hitouts. (I see B.Williams at his best becoming a downgraded version of Tim English, does well around the ground but gets smashed in hitouts something I have a feeling won't happen with Barnett combined with the around the ground game).
  • Burgiel is what we need since he has pace which the club lacks and he's just as quick as Petch. He's the line breaker the club desperately needs and would be a great wing with Chesser and Hough rotating in the future.
  • Long I didn't expect the club to pick him up tbh and I'm sure no one on the Eagles board expected us to pick him up. Some Blues and Cats fans are not happy that we took him. He shows he has class with his ball use and he's clean on ground level. Something gives me Lachie Neale vibes with this guy. How was he able to slide is beyond me some Vic fans have him in the 20 - 40 range. Would be the great crumber we need since Junior left and may become even better than what Junior is to us.
  • Dewar has a high potential but will need time in the Beagles (hopefully the Beagles are better next year). Dude seems like a good lead up forward.
  • Baker seems like a tacking machine, don't know much about him but I have faith he'll be a solid b grade player in the future.
  • Trew and Winder: They showed promise in 2022 but it's clear that they have one more year to stay fit and show they deserve a list spot at the club otherwise they'll be delisted for new players who have a higher ceiling and a higher floor than them.
2023 AFL draft.

Not the end of the world if the club fails to make finals or finish bottom four as this draft is stronger than 2022's. B.Williams, J.Williams and Jamo will be under notice to show something otherwise they'll be replace by superior talls in that draft. The same is said for Trew and Winder. There maybe a possibility that Nic Nat, Shuey will retire and a near certainty that Hurn will retire.

My final two cents on the nickname s**t and then we’ll move on to more Zane Trew bashing.

Let’s not pretend it was an endearing nickname to begin with. It was critical and mocking of someone deemed to not be doing a good enough job. But you know what, that’s the nature of the beast sometimes, especially in a public industry like this.

You can give your mates stupid nicknames because ultimately there is a mutual respect there, and they’re in a position to defend themselves ie give you a stupid nickname back.

Here, there is no right of reply, except for nailing the draft which he apparently has according to people much more invested in the process than I am.

So we’ve got a fairly mean spirited nickname ‘earned’ through underperformance, and we’ll show him respect when he earns it. He earns it. Ok fine but the nickname stays. Doesn’t add up to me.

Anyway, as Keys said, hardly like I’m going to go around carding people for using it, it’s just all a bit embarrassing to me. Call it kids these days being too soft, I’d just call it being considerate for half a second.

Ultimately, regardless of name, I just hope he can do it again in next year’s Super Draft.

I never liked 'The Pieman' when it was purely derisive. And I think you've got the history right.

And I also think O'Brien is unfairly maligned. When he has been a pro for years. Maybe a few blind spots as a recruiter but he has stepped up as list manager. Certainly the drafting.

I disagree that The Pieman isn't a great nickname.

Sure Anus was always terrible. But The Pieman is an absurd meme derived from a ridiculous photo, at a time of supporter frustration.

It's just a good name. Crazy Vozzo good.

The real question smouldering for a year is:
Hobbs vs Chesser + Burgiel
Depends on what we could have got for Hobbs in a trade next year after he asked to go home to Essendon

Also, people shouldn't forget the actual best recruit we've got this year in Jarrod Schofield.

There's been a hole in our coaching ranks since Mitchell left and hopefully Schofield can fill it. Very highly rated and proven at the level.

Looking forward to the new gameplan being unleashed in 2023, seems it's going to be fast paced and high intensity.

My starting team next year - Probably forgot someone.

Shannon Hurn, Tom Barrass, Tom Cole
Rhett Bazzo, Jeremy McGovern, Elliot Yeo
Brady Hough, Luke Shuey, Jayden Hunt
Jack Petruccelle, Oscar Allen, Elijah Hewett
Liam Ryan, Jack Darling, Jamie Cripps
Nic Naitanui, Tim Kelly, Jai Culley

Liam Duggan, Xavier O'Neill, Callum Jamieson, Jamaine Jones/Campbell Chesser

*Ginbey to start WAFL unless burns up the track pre-season. Then replace LD or XO
*Gaff start WAFL
*I couldn't fit Sheed in the starting side.

*No favourites. Reward WAFL form, even 1st year players. Drop ANY player that deserves it.

Whilst I think Hough and Bazzo will be good players, and Chesser if healthy may join them, let's not go overboard: our 2021 drafting was solid, but not spectacular

2022 was our best draft in over a decade from O'Brien, but lets not go overboard here with our history revision and look at our 2021 crop as a bunch of out and out superstars

Meh, its not like 2x other vics dont have that chance.
Hobbs will be a perennial top 15 brownlow guy like Wines. Feels like a super solid 150-200 gamer compared to a couple of flankers.

Is a super super outside player. Plus we would rather use his pace as a reciever than getting bogged down on ball.

I'd hold off on jerking Rohan until we've actually seen if Chesser is a bust or not.

Jerking?

Is this the part where we start verbally blowing the recruitment team and state that we never once doubted them?
It is. Have you been working on your skiing technique?

Strange comment.

Drafts have to be judged through the prism of the picks available, and reality is we have a 2021 draft crop that looks good (with our highest pick yet to play).

2022 is great on paper (as it should be with high picks after a shocking season), but surely judgement on the outcome needs to at least wait until the first preseason game

Still absolutely zero from our first selection of last year's draft.

I'd hold off on jerking Rohan until we've actually seen if Chesser is a bust or not.

2022 draft on the other hand..
Was just about to post this. Sheesh everyone taking turns to dollop their cream on the pie despite seeing exactly 10 seconds of Chesser playing footy
