Reid is a power player like JHF, maybe not as strong in the upper body but a better kick and decision maker with a lot more positional flexibility, core strength and reading of the play.

He will still take 2 years and 3 preseasons of development to become a midfield force imo at AFL level. I think his weakness is his lack of endurance and if someone can match him for strength but is larger and just as athletic I worry about his ability to break a tag. He is a genuine high impact player so even if tagged and he had 15 disposals for the match I would say those 15 disposals would be worth a lot more than most others.

Not sure why some of you are getting so upset about someone wary of the hype around Reid.
I think everyone is wary as we see it a lot - #1 not the best player, or #1 pick ends up and average player at best.

And we all know the March #1 doesn't always end up Nov #1, or that other equivalent options emerge.

But right now he is streeting them.

There's rare players that are elite at all ages and all comps. This is what you're hoping for if you draft Reid - the guy who in 2 to 3 seasons is firmly lodged in the top 5 of the AFL.

There's more than a reasonable chance that he is this guy.

I'd take the AIS exhibition matches with a pinch of salt. It's less important than both the under 18 championships and NAB League or Colts.

Given the depth of outside and key position talent in the 2023 draft It's unlikely that Reid doesn't go number one unless one of those key forwards stands up and dominates.

If we unfortunately finish last, then trading or not trading pick one comes down to how closely we rate the next few players in the draft and how much other clubs are willing to give up.

One can imagine a cohort of three or four players rising up the ranks to make a top clear top five. If we could land two of those top five players and something else then the trade looks viable on paper.

I understand everything you've said, but people can believe otherwise.

I don't see the comparison.

JHF is a heavy set through the legs and has poor lateral movement. He's all about either standing up in a tackle or exiting out the stoppage as quickly as possible.

From what I've seen Reid reminds me of Toby Greene, a little bigger and a little quicker. His dummy step, arch in traffic, ability to body line the ball and then change direction. Uses the ball like him.

He's still crippled them financially for a large portion of that contract and struggled to get on the park for certain periods.

Due to him eating up so much cash and sitting there injured for so long (Hai Nicnat) I'd speculate that prevented them from keeping certain players or landing others due to the obvious financial squeeze.

What's it got them? Zero flags, 1 grand final pantsing. Didn't cost them any picks but it was a biiig decision, with nothing concrete to say it was really justified in retrospect.

No doubt when he hangs the boots up, there will be numerous articles breaking it all down for us.

3 Grand finals 14 16 22

2016 they were robbed by the umps not getting a free kick for 2 quarters of footy

Franklin cost them less per year than McGovern?

Who has it cost them ?

Mitchell, Hewett , Allir Allir .

They probably kept all the guys they wanted .

Dawson was always heading back to SA

As far as long term contracts go its far from a failure

Lol - I didn't even think of Hewett and Allir Allir. From that perspective (adding in Mumford, COLA and the trade ban), Buddy has cost them a packet.

You are right though, they should have won 2016. It was the only time I've ever barracked for them, as I was watching daylight robbery.

At the end of the day, Franklin was recruited to win flags. He failed, so the trade is neutral at best. I wouldn't call it a success.

Chips on shoulders can impact vision, Buddy was a huge win for the Swans on and off the field. He is the only player I have seen who can dominate half a ground and intimidate with mobility, pace and power. Thats pretty good value for money for me. Plugger was a lead an mark player and Carey a high CHF although brilliant he didnt dominate half a ground.

Sydney would 100% call the Buddy trade a success.

Despite no flags he would've raised the profile of Swans and AFL in Sydney massively.

He's still the biggest name in the AFL 10 years after heading there, the amount of money he has helped syd and the afl drag in would be huge.

Not all on field reasons.

Look at NicNat, he would've Been given 2 extra years so we can use him as the poster boy 100%

Be very careful to call a good number 1 pick as a generational player as they are only 18 years old. Future development play a large part in the success.
Some regarded Rowell in 2019 as a generational player. I dont think he has turned into one yet after 4 years.
This is not it though.

No one is saying he is or will be a generational player. People are saying generation players exist and are rare as hens teeth, and this guy is a better chance than usual of being one. That's a fair bit different to what you think people are saying.

So have we reached the point where we've had (inc this year) two absolute crappola years and can ask (and expect to get) compensation picks from the AFL?

Let's do a comparison to Gold Coast and their 2019 compo package.
In 2018 GC finished 17th with 4 wins.
In 2019 they finished 18th with 3 wins and got a compo package.
Compo... In 2019 they got picks 1 and 22 (to go with pick 2. And remember they had picks 2, 3 and 6 in 2018).
In 2020 they got pick 11 and in 2021 pick 19.
Plus Darwin, plus pre-listing of academy players.

Compare.
In 2022 we finished 17th with 2 wins.
In 2023 it looks like 17th or 18th with maybe 3 wins but probably 1 or 2.
In addition we have lost two of our 4 first round draftees of the past 12 years to career ending concussion injuries.

In other words we are noticeably worse than GC were when they got handed the compo package from heaven.

Should we not get a package at least as good?
No.

Reasons.

You’re West Coast, not Gold Coast.

Be nice if 1 or 2 of our other draftees can grab a Rising Star nomination by the end of 2023

They will. The stats of the nominee's usually drop off a fair after the bye.

10 disposal games get you nominated.

Fully expect Long to get one at some point. Hewett will if Simpson plays him a proper full game.

Sydney need razzle dazzle to keep the harbour city entertained.

Being in a GF means a lot so it’s a flag or nothing feels far fetched

If anyone need convincing that those managing the AFL see it as a product, not a sport, and that they will use anything at their disposal to do what's best for marketing that product, they need only watch this match.

Absolute malarkey.
