Re English lets not get our knickers in knots using pick 1 when we may not need to.

Id swap a 27 year old Barrass for a 25 year old English.
Why? We can get him for free next year.

Oh No Reaction GIF

One bloke makes a solitary throw away comment about being "In the know" and linking us to Tinglish and the next 5 pages is people screeching.

"We're trading pick 1 for English!"
"* this club"
"He's not even that good..."
"Maynard, blocked...."

No wonder this thread moves at Tom Cole pace each day. On what planet, after the club has said time and time again this year (Finally mind you) that we are going to be targetting the draft, would we make a play for Tim English with picks when he's going to cost nothing but cap space next year... coincidently when a bunch of our retiring oldies are no longer around and we're well positioned to offer him decent coin to get him over? Let alone involve the #1 pick in this absurd scenario?
Because making up scenarios where we come out as the losers then getting worked up about that fake scenario before it could even have a chance to happen is a thing some posters love to do on this board.

"Wow x is just the thing we would do too. Then y happens and before you know it we are z. Classic West Coast, we're a laughing stock for doing that - that's so deflating :("

Given the current situation with the club, I reckon people are pretty justified at assuming the worst

Will we?

How about English wants to sign long term with someone NOW while at his peak value and not risk an injury in the next 12 months on the off chance the Dogs don't match.

Why would a player risk hundreds of thousands of dollars just so we might land him for free. Maybe.

His management has likely been fielding calls from us for years. Player wants a secure long term contract this year and will sign one. So put up an offer or he stays where he is long term.

Fair?

If he doesn't want to sign in 12 months then we don't sign him. Seems pretty straight forward.

Because every year we have quality free agents knocking down the door to join us.

Not.

The last 8 years we have been pretty constrained by salary cap. Fair enough too as we had success and some players who had other clubs drive their prices up.

End of 2024 that will have turned significantly, to the point that for pretty much the first time in the free agency era we will have significant cap space.

If we can show improvement (off a super low base) and a newer game style next year - coupled with cap $ plus the history of success at the club, etc etc. we will be a destination club of sorts (don’t want that too much either where players are just seeking a payday).

This is just FOMO.

No it's just a fact.

How often do top shelf players indicate they want to come to us?

Kelly is one. Who else?

It doesn't happen often. We aren't Collingwood or Brisbane.

So on the rare occasion a top shelf player becomes 'gettable' people say. Nah......don't want to use a decent pick to get them.

So turning our backs on a quality player who wants to play for us. Is good management?

Yes, if they're not deemed required.

Why would the club put themselves at a disadvantage just to accommodate a free agent?

This makes no sense.

If the club did it they obvious think it's to our advantage. And disagree with what you and others think.

AKA they understand much better than many on here just how difficult it is to attract top quality players.

We are talking about the 6 or 7 top shelf players every premiership team has. Those 6 or 7 are very, very hard to come across so when one does show interest you do something. You don't freeze with FOMO drafting a player at pick 5.

And if we did trade for English I would hope pick 1 was not involved.

Sure they're hard to come by.

You don't trade for someone just because they're 'gettable' though.

You build your list through the draft and then top it off with trades.

WCE did this for the last 2 flags, after all, and every other club who's been successful over the past decade has done the same.

They all already had nearly their entire current premiership list in place via the draft, before topping off with targeted trades to win flags.

What they didn't do is go and trade for big-name players at the start of their rebuild.

Also, players don't 'announce' they want to go to a club without that club first indicating they want to trade for them, so who knows what WCE's strike rate for attracting players is compared to more active clubs? WCE usually seem to want to attract players from other clubs to fill needs, not to come in as the star player. It's never really been their MO.

Yeah, I get that it's possibly harder to attract players to move west. That doesn't mean you compromise your draft hand for the sole sake of luring one across though. That's Freo levels of list management.

Re English lets not get our knickers in knots using pick 1 when we may not need to.
Did you untie your own knickers in the 18 minutes it took to post this after posting the following.😂
How did English go against Gawn in the 1st three quarters of that GF? English then was 23 v Gawn at 30 years. He did better than break even against the best ruck in the comp. Thats Bailey Williams current age people. Lets just stop and think about that for a moment. Actually lets take two moments to think about that.

How many minutes had a 23 yr old English played against the best ruck in the comp AND beaten Gawn? Versus Jackson at 3/4 time who would have been on low minutes playing forward.

English at 23 yrs of age had beaten Gawn for 3 quarters until a fresh quality 20 year old jumped over him in the final quarter.

He a top 2 ruck in the comp and 25 years old.
Also, regarding this:
Id swap a 27 year old Barrass for a 25 year old English.
Why? I don’t see any connection between the two.

Barrass is signed to 2027 and we should get good value for if he wants to leave. English comes free (if he wants to come) in 12 months time and costs no draft capital. I don’t see the urgency.

The club has openly said before that if a player wants to come we'll do what we can, no doubt we've spoken to English (his management). Simmo only said recently the plan was within two seasons to be the youngest team in the comp so I take that to mean early picks won't be used unless early picks are coming back.

Club is also vocal about Reid, no need to respond to any Reid rumours if we don't plan on drafting him if we have the chance to.

The manager of West Coast vice captain Tom Barrass has not ruled out the star being open to a trade as speculation swirls he could be off to Sydney.
Barrass, 27, has been linked to the Swans this season despite being contracted until the end of 2027.

It is Friday so a good old fashioned multi club trade would normally be on the cards.

Not today. I would be happy taking our picks to the draft and keeping Barrass. Harley at 1 and the other picks we hold will be the third draft in a row where we progress with the rebuild.

For all the other scenarios, I would be open to split pick 1 and lose Barrass IF

1. We got 2 of Curtain, McKercher or Watson
2. We picked up O'Sullivan or Murphy

We still have picks 19 and one of 36 and 38. I am OK in also paying some of Tom's salary if it gives us the better picks.

In terms of how those picks are going to be gained - that is the responsibility on the teams wanting pick 1 and Barrass. It is likely to require picks 2 and 4 to satisfy the first requirement.

Now Melbourne, Sydney and whoever wants to play, it is over to you to get creative.

Meanwhile Curtin not been given a jump up to the WAFL team yet. Listed as a midfielder in colts again, I sense the loss to EP on the weekend and loss of 1st place has got the Tigers in a less experimental mood.
