The slide is from 1 to 2, or potentially even 3.

Then pick 19, which was worth a fair bit mind you, now also slides 2 spots to pick 21 potentially further to 22 depending on FA compo and worth very little. That pick is also now behind the Dockers first selection, so any highly rated WA talent which slips through... like Edwards or Tholstrop for example, now has to get past them as well.

We've also lost the ability to threaten to walk players to the PSD now we are no longer at the bottom, so that ace is gone from any trade talks too.

^ That's the full picture. All from one late win. For mine that pick 19 slide is a punch in the chad.
Honestly I can deal with missing out on Tholstrop. Not necessarily somebody I'd even consider if he wasn't "local".

And this is partly why Gold Coast have never amounted to anything and GWS have fallen short of maximising their talent
There's a difference in winning a close elimination final, and an insignificant regular season match. Not to mention 5 or years before you actually seriously take on a GF run. Likely with only a handful of the same players participating.
Expansion club problems were that 19 yr olds are dickheads to deal with and they put 30 of them together and gave them lots of money. Pretty simple really.

Me too, to be honest.

Don't rate him as highly as others do, but he's still highly regarded. Twomeys got him at 23 in his most recent phantom, and of course, he's from WA.

Even if GC accepted an offer of what’s currently 21,35,40 for their R1 is that worthwhile since it probably gets us Duursma at 4 or ??? at 5

I’d rather use the 3 picks before throwing everything at one player who doesn’t particularly fill a need anyway
A tall, fast, extremely skilful goal kicking half forward is exactly what we need dont you think?

I have a counter argument to the argument being pushed on this thread that this win has magical properties attached to it in terms of inspiring the players on our list for years to come and that supersedes the loss of draft position in importance. I think that an additional big negative from todays win, in addition to the loss of draft position, is that it is going to provide ammunition to the people running the club to argue for continuing on with their minimal change agenda and will likely result in us spinning our wheels in the mud for another 12 months with only superficial changes being made at the club and only for the sake of optics, i.e. assistant coaches and and the fitness coach.

Nisbett and co seem to believe in an inevitable magical reversion to the mean. That we will become strong, successfull and perennially competitive again because that is what we have been for most of our existence. They are ignoring the reality that a lot of the advantages that we used to have such as having more money to spend on the best quality staff/systems and more staff are now gone due to the soft cap. We were able to defy gravity in the past and be successfull despite not having access to high draft picks because of these advantages. Thats now gone. But they have not processed that yet.

They are also in denial and still believing their own bull**** about how bad the state of our list is, how bad their drafting has been, how bad the list management has been with ridiculous contracts being given out, how bad our high performance department has been. Watch them carefully and what they say. It is very clear that they still think everybody else is wrong and they are right. They are not going to publicly argue their case on that because the results are so awful that they would be laughed out of town if they tried. And they know that. But they definately do not accept the consensus and almost unanimous industry opinion about how incompetent they have been and how far standards have slipped. They really do believe their basket of excuses including Covid and injuries. I think if the Nisbett faction wins the day the only changes will be cosmetic and will only be being made for the purposes of looking like they are doing something and trying to deflect some of the criticism. And this win today greatly helps the Nisbett faction remain in control for another 12 months.

In many ways we are like an alcaholic waiting to hit rock bottom before he accepts reality and changes his ways. Todays win might be like a trampoline that prevents us from hitting rock bottom for another 12 months.

Could use that argument for every interstate kid.

There’s a good chance we don’t get either.
*Every interstate kid that has reportedly informed us that he does not want to move interstate and with an uncle that (apparently) manages him who has also said this publicly.

Sure that might all be fluff, but imo where there's smoke there's fire.

Also no chance norf get pick 2 as compo

Lol when has Reid ever informed us of that? That was shut down by US, Reid’s management and Reid’s coach.

Absolutely i'd have thought. Would even throw in something else if i had to.

Top 10 in this draft looks good.

Adding 2 of McKercher/Curtin/Dursma/O'Sullivan would be a good bit of business, however i think it's fairly unlikely to happen with what we've got to offer.

All i know is i'm well and truly open to trading our 2nd (Ports too) now it's no longer the first pick of night 2.

I get the point you're trying to make..

However I don't think you can compare an elimination final played as underdogs at a hostile opposition home ground, in a dire affair which went to extra time and us winning legit after the siren... An actual TOUGH game..

To a simple round 23 home and away game following a record 100+pt drubbing in a Derby the week before by the very same players.

Absolutely nothing was riding on this game, other than our draft hand. If this win had of come any time before say, round 20 I'd have been happy enough. Why couldn't the players have done it then? Why didn't they show how much they "care for Simmo' in the majority of the past 22 games before this?

At this point of the year, all it's done is have a serious negative impact on our draft. Couldn't have just waited one more game until the season wraps up could we. Nope.

And no I don't think you ever tell players to not win... But there's not a single person on this planet that would say Oscar Allen doesn't need a rest. His season should have been put on ice weeks ago and a young player should've come in and given it 110%, with the class of the Bulldogs inevitably coming up Trump's today.

It's a big price to pay for a dopamine hit. Winning is good, I'm all for winning... But not in the 2nd last game of the year in a season finishing now 2nd last labelled as the worse AFL team of all time.

If today was so important to the young players, I'd hate to see what the 5 hundred point drubbings have done for them this year. Cheers for those Simpson and seniors 👍
Really blame the Dogs for this TBH. What were the odds for us to win before the game? 17/1 or something stupid? Dogs playing for finals and us coming off a hundred point thumping. No one thought we would win this game. Once the momentum started the Dogs should have been able to stop it, they didn’t.
At that point you can’t tell players to stop. So the Dogs are shit and we get the pick we get.

If Suns get pick 2, they get ahead of the Walter bid.

So pick 2, then Walter, Read and Rogers. Worth them cashing pushing their future first round pick in to this year, and taking a deficit in to next year’s draft.
They will likely get a second rounder for Hollands and possibly other players so deficit won’t be much

It's another concern for Yeo. Did a hammy on the weekend. Unbelievably injury prone.

Seems we going for some more deja vu with our older players. Gov just got through by the thinnest of margins. Looked hurt on multiple occasions.
Reckon the way Yeo is going next season will be his last too.

Look i have had a night of sleep to calm down and think the win through. I've been through anger , sadness and now I'm at acceptance.

I accept that our club is so ****ing stupid what the **** were they thinking . Who cares about the spoon finishing last could have absolutely turbo charged our rebuild in both quality and quantity of high end talent that we needed .

****ing morons

I'm really shocked at the number of "supporters" that are angry... not just disappointed... but angry at winning.

Losing is a cancer. It gets into a club, permeates everything and takes for ever to clean out. Wanting to lose in order to get pick 1 is like wanting the cancer to spread so you can get access to the best medicine. Prevention is the best cure.

So Harley Reid is a "generational talent"? So was Gary Ablett -- how'd he go at Gold Coast? How many premierships did Chris Judd help Carlton win?

We will achieve way, way more by cultivating a winning culture than any pick 1 can help.

Now North have pick #1 I reckon the AFL will see it differently and late first round compensation ....sounds dodgy but the AFL system is a little dodgy at times but NM have a generational player don't need the extras .

They also used a 1st last year on a player with an acl.

Hopefully the AFL doesnt keep rewarding clubs who plan to lose for benefit.

Don’t forget the only reason we’re above north is cause they went over the interchange cap against Sydney which cost them the game

Libba was a big out as he would have shut down the effect Kelly had and the Dogs didn’t have anyone to play that role..

People have a right to be angry that our big prize for sitting through this s*t could end up being Zane ****** Duursma.
Not suggesting he’ll be any good, but threads like this will be funny to return to in a few years if someone like Duursma becomes the best in the league while Reid amounts to little. The last few days of posts will be good to look back on either way
