Playing deep forward, Harley started this game very well taking marks and kicking goals. Unfortunately his game ended early when he seemed to pick up a knee injury early in the second quarter. Here's hoping its nothing serious.

I’m a horrible person, but I wouldn’t mind a cheeky serious knee injury so North pass on him at 1 and we get him at 2.

I’m sorry. I need to let it go, I know.

It’s not really worth reading the article but this bit was of interest

No idea if this is correct but it’s the first time I’ve seen it spelt out like this

To give you an idea per the AFL’s player payment summary

a total of 51 players earned over $800k with another 32 earning over $700k. You’d expect those numbers to be higher for 2023 and again for 2024 with the salary cap increasing so even $800k for McKay could fall short of what’s needed for Band 1

More likely band 2 (end of first round) which bizarrely is the first pick of night 2 (see 2018 and our Lycett pick) meaning finishing 17th will not have cost us the first pick on night two and the potential trade offers that brings

5% of 720 players is 36. So he wont be in the top 36 players in salary. Great...not teir one.

To get pick 4, we are likely to have to give up our pick 21, next year's R2 (I have assumed as 21) plus picks 40 and 54. It may be higher

That would have us with pick 2, 4 35 and 59 in the draft.

It is costly and it comes with risk that we have to accept one of Curtin or McKercher plus a Watson or Duursma.

It would help if Walter was still on the board at 2 and we promised not to bid right? That would save them some points.

But yeah, I think it’d definitely require our future 2nd, I’d still do it personally.

We could wait until draft night to see who’s available at their pick as well, if McKercher or Curtin aren’t there, I probably wouldn’t do it, unless a team like GWS or the Dogs offered both the 1sts they have for it.
In a competitive world (assuming (Norf do not get band 1 compensation), we have to be ready to pick the second best player in the draft and get Jed back to Perth. At that point, the Suns will need to sell off pick 4.

Now if we do a mates trade, we do not know who will be available at their pick 4 and hence the uncertainty. The big question is what will the Hawks do? If I was them, I would go Watson at 3 with a back up of Duursma. This is more in terms of list balance as I do not think they need McKercher. They probably would like Curtin as Granger Barrass looks a flop. That being the case, we take Curtin at 2 and do the trade for 4 with high expectation for McKercher. The discount for not picking Jed Walter at 2 and he goes at 3 is worth 226 points (incl discount) which is about pick 54.

That said, would the Hawks be listening to 10 and 17 for 3? It might need another sweetener for it to happen but not a big one. Then that throws a spanner in the works.

We cannot guarantee the Suns that Norf will not bid on Walter at 1 (maybe they have they learnt the no bid on Daicos error).

Simple solution to the McKay debacle: Use a points system to determine FA compensation rather than linking it to the recipients ladder position.

If McKay's hypothetical compensation value is 1,400 points, the compensation is pick 10.

Simples.

Even simpler solution: get rid of compo entirely.

Or at least get rid of band 1 and possibly band 2.

AFL doesn’t do simple though. It’s beyond them

I like your Best 22 but Long should be in the seniors. He's more than earn't it this year

Looks good, get rid of Sheed and Brockman replace with Chesser & Long.

I think Robertson stays at Brisbane.

Would like his chances of featuring more prominently in the coming years as the likes Zorko shuffle off. He’s never actually made any noise about leaving either.

Plus once he officially re-signs, we get to finally ban ‘that guy’ from the Eagles board.

So who’s the real winners here?

Hopefully Chesser has a big preseason and is best 22 but not on current form.

Sheed lack of defence could be covered by Ginbey and Dev.

Long and Brockman is line ball atm imo. That’s a fully fit team too which we haven’t had for a long time

Hard to know

It was reported a little while back that he wanted to stay at Brisbane so it seemed that was that

But there’s been no news of him signing a new deal which means either he’s not yet been offered one or hasn’t accepted a new deal yet

Four years gives solid job security, likely on better money and more chance of game time in his preferred position. On the flip side, he’s more likely to win a flag at Brisbane, but only if he can crack the 23 which he’s not regularly doing just yet

And if it is true we’ve offered him 4 years, then we must have had some indication he’s gettable. Or it’s a Hail Mary

I wonder how much of Dev’s decision rests on Brisbanes season.

If he is a premiership player in 6 weeks, but still essentially a fringe player is he more or less likely to leave for more opportunity.

Tom Morris said Brisbane have a 2 year deal in front of Dev.

I think our offer would be very enticing but Dev has stayed there longer than I thought so…

Ashcroft 2.0 is in next year's draft and is also projected to be a jet.

Will further limit his chances

On top of another Ashcroft likely top 10 for next year. Fagin has him pegged as a tagger now anyway.

I suspect Naughton will end up at Fremantle using the draft capital they get from Darcy leaving, either this year or next

That’s my best guess anyway

Personally not that interested in Naughton as he’d cost too much in draft picks when we’re still rebuilding
I hope so, Naughton is a very Freo like pick, I don't think he will improve his game much from here.

Such a mixed emotion day yesterday. Was cheering the boys on and it felt good to win but the ramifications could be huge if North take both Reid and Curtin.

I'm glad the boys got to experiance the win and the boost in morale but can't help but feel that it would've been better from a club perspective if we'd had another honourable loss. Anyway no point dwelling on it. Maybe it will be the spark that starts the turn around. Plus it shows that we have the talent to compete when motivated.

If North don't get the pick 2 comp for McKay then it seems almost certain we take Curtin. It sures up our backline and gives us a distributor off the half back to replace Hurn. Not super excited about a KPD with pick 2 but he does looks the goods.

Curtin to help sure up our defense stocks, Dev to help with some inside grunt in the midfield and Brockman as a small forward with some flair, would be a good start but we really need some top end talent in the midfield. If we can trade back into the 1st round to pick up another mid that could make the offseason a big win.
