The offer would need to put McKay in the top 5% of the league for salary (with a few additional considerations for age, length of contract etc) to trigger Band 1 compo.

Surely that's not a foregone conclusion?
I hope not but all reports lately have said it will be band 1 compo.

I agree with what you are saying.

It just doesn't make sense.
We have so many holes and with BW dramatically improving in 2023 and Barnett progressing as you'd hope a project ruck would, ruck is one of the smallest holes we have. By the time we are competitive or contending Barnett will either be a first ruck with BW as the forward ruck, or BW will be the mobile ruck who goes forward.

Why would we offer a $Mill a year for English? He's a good ruck, but he's not a million dollar game influencer.

The word throughout the year was that salary cap was tight and that was the reason we only took one pick to the mid season draft. There were 4 or 5 players we could have put on the LTI list, but there was no point as we couldn't pay for a second MSD player.

What does our salary cap position in 2023 have to do with long term deals that you can back end and would start in 2024?

Not to mention CBA which is yet to be finalised that will increase the salary cap from 2024 onwards?

Is Curtin really expected to go top 2 or is it mainly based on the Eagles' supposed interest in him?
Nobody really knows but Rawlings said they need to draft a tall and Curtin was mentioned. So personally, i will be looking at who is expected to be around pick 3, like McKercher or Duursma and any other bolters.

Hope you are correct but most reports are saying band 1 compo.

They don’t know anything. “Rival clubs” are the ones saying it. They wouldn’t actually know.

See what happens. It’s possible, but even the AFL, the most incompetent organisation on planet earth, can see how ridiculous it would be.

There’s also the mechanism to overturn the result if the formula spits out an anomalous outcome

If, and it’s a mighty big if, the AFL has any integrity they’ll acknowledge that pick 2 for McKay is well over his value and adjust it accordingly

Given that North may well be given the ability to match any bid for Sanders, maybe even prelist him, then they shouldn’t have any complaints on a band 2 compo for McKay

Yeah, but then the secret sauce gets added and hey presto... James Frawley gets you band 1 compo.

All this talk about Naughton is getting me randy. But IMO there is no way in a million years dogs would do 2 for Naughton and 10. 2 straight up for Naughton would be more along what the Dogs would expect you’d imagine
2 for 10 + Naughton values Naughton at roughly pick 15 according to the draft pick calculator.

Given the current system overvalues lower picks, that's more like pick 20.

Not a chance the Dogs take that one.

I have been told incessantly around here that 195cm is not tall enough for a modern KPP

I don’t see a team giving up anything worth more than 2, even if they have to give something back and the Dogs first might have to be moved anyway if they want to get ahead of a Croft bid.

But I agree, I don’t think they’ll deal Naughton this off season.

At least Frawley was a former All Australian.
Plus the $650-odd grand he got back in 2014 would have put him pretty close to the top 5%.

I get the sense the AFL have floated the prospect of North receiving Band 1 for McKay through their various vessel journos to gauge the response. The overwhelming response has been that it would be an absolute disgrace if North walked with picks 1 and 2, particularly if already receiving assistance for Sanders (which is ridiculous in and of itself, allowing a player to retrospectively join your academy, and then waiving the usual rule preventing bids in top 30).

For all their faults, I can't see the AFL doing it.

I believe the media is conditioning the public to accept pick 2 as fait accompli

Another example

The Tim Kelly trade in hindsight wasn't that bad when looking at what players were taken and where the picks were taken in the end.

The main components being

2020 Draft - Pick 18 R Angwin

2019 Draft - Pick 16 C Stephens
2019 Draft - Pick 27 J Sharp
2019 Draft - Pick 38 N Bryan

It's pretty simplistic to suggest they were the exact players we gave up.

2019 - Pick 16 - Georgiades De Koning and Roberston were in that mix
2019 - Pick 27 - Maginess, Jones, Comben
2019 - Pick 38 - Warner

2020 Draft - Pick 18 - Holmes, O'Driscoll
