I feel cox is being groomed as next after Horse.

Don Pyke has been great, so would not be surprised if he gets poached

Grooming Cox

Sounds iffy

But on brand for Sydney (the city not the club)

When I worked for 1 year at the club it was as a part time scout specifically for the SW of WA and that has been where my primary focus was. When you know the area well and have contacts in the area it is not just going to see games and taking scouting notes of the players. I can't speak for others only myself but I also focussed on the relationships of those players, how other people saw them, the good and the bad and that was a key part of my analysis.

Last year working for a different club as previously stated my role was completely different. Whilst I did end up having a key input on the final draft board of the club and that ended up in 3 of the players I was keen on for those positions (the club had parameters of the player types they wanted) my role was almost purely focussed on reasons not to draft players. So working as a scout but primarily to counterbalance how some scouts only see what they want to see in the positives and while i spent 6 weeks in Victoria plus the academy game and the draft half my time was spent watching videos of games and videos of interviews. It is probably best to think of it as a behaviour analysis role. Players, their families and coaches give up a lot of non verbal tells when they are talked to. So a lot was about sifting through what was being said and measuring it against their personality and what their eyes, body and those around them were doing. In regards to the draft board there were a lot of other people involved and a couple of times even without my input what was a reasonably numbered board ended up with names that just had lines put through them. Getting to the draft there were only 20 odd names left on the board for the club. (plus positions to bid if a player was still there)

I was offered a much more senior role in Melbourne but the money wasn't worth it and it didn't suit my current or future lifestyle. Then more recently another more senior role was offered to me but again it meant a lot more scrutiny, partially leading a team and huge hours. With the way the soft cap is now even list managers and head recruiters aren't paid anywhere near as much as people think. There is just not enough money to go round after coaching, S&C and medical departments are checked off first.

The other big thing and this is part of the reason why I think people find it so hard and are very hard judges on recruiting teams is you can't take into account what the AFL are going to do in regards to rules. When you draft a player you aren't drafting them for right then unless it's a mature age player and even then it's very 50/50 even highly regarded ones like Isaac Smith or Tim Kelly. You are drafting for 3-5-8 years into the future. With the AFL constantly changing the rules you could draft perfectly for the way the club wants to play and how they see the game going in the future but with the AFL making such significant and key changes to the rules the roles you are looking to fill can change significantly and the players you select for those roles even if developed perfectly are no longer suitable. They may still make it in modified roles or in different positions but you really are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Just because a player may be able to come in and play a role in their first year, it is not expected for it to be a key role and for them to win that key role against men. Now I haven't been involved in the recruiting of top 3 picks where things are different and expectations are different but it's my opinion and I think it's widely held that even with those top 3 picks, even outstanding guys like Harley Reid or Nick Daicos you aren't expecting them to come in and be stars from day 1.

I am not scouting this year and don't think i'll have a role in footy again as I likely won't be in the country all that much longer but even now whether im watching live, replay or tape im still watching 20 odd hours of junior footy as well as at least 4-5 AFL games a week. Over a 50/50 split of the weekend and first few days each week.

Lastly with the extra 2 teams in the league plus 'homesickness', academies and FS what was potentially a 3 year rebuild plus filling in the gaps as the team builds is IMO a 5 year rebuild. It is what it is.

What looks like a super draft 12-18 months out can become a dud if the players don't continue to develop.

Very well explained.

This kid Joel Freijah could go top 5 if he plays a handful of games like this. Is a big sized midfielder who booted 6 from playing in the centre square and off the wing. Good decision maker who uses the ball well in general play. First real big mover up the rankings.

Thought under ager Harvey Langford was very impressive and will be spoken about a lot next year.

Stingrays had a couple of other players who stood out in Billy Wilson who dominated off half back. Really nice disposal/decision maker runs and Carry’s the ball. Only made a couple of mistakes late in the game raking up 25 disposals and a goal. The other was Kade De La Rue who is a midfielder who has good pace and bit of class about him. Will see more of him and Joel Freijah for Vic Country.
How did Frangalas look? Half forward, winger who can find it but his kicking is a bit rushed.

Other I like is Shipp, first rounder for mine. Very very good half back.

Shipp was good and has been solid all year. Just thought Billy was better in this match the way he ran the lines at pace and used the ball off half back.

Frangalas was okay to, wouldn’t say he stood out as much as the other guys I mentioned.

One I didn’t mention was another under ager in Cooper Hynes he wasn’t quite as impressive as Langford but still looked good, knew how to find it.

No love for Darcy Jones GWS?

Jack Martin I was thinking could be our next Jetta attacking half back for his last 3 or 4 years.

Moyle is a WA kid? Wow. Would be a good pickup.

Tunstill is another we were keen on I recall.

Good list.
Darcy Jones has done ACL a very bad one that's why i didnt include him

The two ruckman where not WA boys but rucks are more prepared to move than any other player type

We just need to cross fingers and toes for Livingston to slip past pick 40.

Kid is a beast and now recorded at 200cm at 17yrs old.

I know it doesn’t make or break a ruckman, but I like my ruckmen over the 200 cm mark.

Still, a tad undersized for a modern day ruck at this stage, unless he grows some more and/or has a decent leap.

In any case, very promising, hopefully we can grab him!

Jones was top 10 in the B&F last year.
I like Jones, but similar to Barrass I’m not putting much stock in our B&F results for 2022.

Whoever is durable enough to play a full season always stands a good chance of doing well in our B&F.

Not sure how many games Jones played but clearly a big chunk of the side missed a heap of games.

Good player though and will definitely be top 10 again this year unless he has an unlucky collision injury

200cm is the new key position size.

Rucks are almost 204cm minimum!

Livingston falls into an awkward gap, where at AFL level he needs to be more fwd than ruck.

Has he stopped growing is the important factor.

As a min he is projecting as a ruck /forward. I'm sure Waterman will be pleased.

We do need a 200+cm forward to complement Oscar and Waterman.

This post is worthy of post of the year.

As for you, what's the plan? Off to find America's best young prospects and send him our way as a star Cat B? Cayman islands? Canary islands?

FRINGE LION COULD FIND NEW HOME

Brisbane midfielder Dev Robertson might need to move clubs to secure an onball role as rival clubs make plays for the No. 22 pick from the 2019 national draft.

Robertson is from West Australia and last year had some interest from Perth-based clubs but his suitors are believed to include Victorian teams this time around.

He played round 1 and then had only one possession in 52 minutes as the sub in round 2 and one disposal in 11 minutes when subbed on in round 4.

After 16 games in his second season he played only eight last year and Josh Dunkley and Will Ashcroft have pushed him further back this year.

Ashcroft’s brother Levi will arrive at the end of next year and father-son Jaspa Fletcher also arrived with Will Ashcroft in last year’s draft as a midfielder.

It means he will likely have to find a second home to become an established midfielder despite Brisbane’s determination to re-sign him.

If I was Robertson my thinking would be right now I would be guaranteed a game in the seniors every week at WCE.

Prob won't change next year either so that could influence his decision

We chased him Last year under contract and he stayed loyal and didn't request a trade.

Dev would not be happy not getting a look or playing 9 minutes as the sub.

Lions will get another Ashcroft next year and Dunkley and Ashcroft #1 have come in and are playing his roles.

Come on Dev do yourself a favour and give yourself the best opportunity to play every week.

Wonder if the Lions suspect he is going so aren't investing games in him?

Chances are injuries will hit and Dev will get games at some point. Hopefully not enough to change his mind should he be looking West.

Joel Freijah was mentioned in The Age today. Saying he's shot up in to first round calculations now. Some recruiters likening him to Hugh McCluggage. 191cm with the coveted speed/endurance combo.

Article in The Age today saying Ginbey, Long and Hewett are all close to signing (likely two year) extensions.

Need to add Culley to that list.

Also kinda glad there's been no news on Gov and Cripps. Unless they're just keeping it quiet because they signed them on with an extra year before they both broke down.

Lol - imagine if he gets traded to Geelong
