I refuse to believe Naitanui is on a huge deal with us, didn't he last sign on after his second knee injury? Plus he gets the AFL money for being an ambassador.

Agree - Believe it was reported at the time to be much lower than his previous contract (apparently worth ~$700k per year inclusive of ambassador pay)

That said, even if he was on substantial pay, dude's in the best form of his career and just earned B2B AA's

I understand his limitations, but watch our tackling quarter 1 vs Fremantle, Brisbane etc etc. really don’t think this skill and quality can be coached and taught at this stage of players careers (gaff, sheed, Kelly etc etc), so we have to draft this, either with the 18yo’s we bring in, or through trading if we want to to see immediate change. We need physicality, SPS is probably better than anyone we’ve got

I’d rather go with 18 year olds.

SPP butchers the ball worse than priddis. You can’t just bring players in because they can tackle. There is no “designated tackler” position on the ground that he can fill.

From that same article. Cats are going to turn pick 36 who's played 12 games in 4 years into a first rounder apparently
That's a softening up of their usual valuations and hard nosed attitude to trading. Only 1 x 1st rounder.
They're going soft.

At this rate we'll be able to talk them into trading us an out of contract guy who they picked up in the rookie draft for Brander and next years first rounder... but only if we pay his salary for the first 2 years.

"Geelong has had a degree of interest in him since his draft year, but the Cats are not blessed with spare cash either and are focusing on turning possible trade requests from Jordan Clark and Charlie Constable into first-round draft selections."

Clark plus a 2nd rounder 》 pick upgrade to a 1st rounder.

Just don't see it happening. Geelong have 30, 32 and 34.

What team in the back end of the first round would want Clarke enough to drop down? Geelong would need to give up two of those picks at least, and then what is the point?

I'm in the yes camp for SPP if little coat.
We need hardness and some mongrel.

He'd improve out list without a doubt.
He'd improve that group ranked 16 -28 at the club. That's the important thing. Our bottom end once we get a few injuries has been found wanting.

SPP might not be the guy, but we do need to find someone that crash's and bash'es. Really only have Nic Nat and Yeo in the midfield who do that.

Cash strapped yet unable to make finals. What a position we're in.

Rioli changing management to that spiv music promoter is an interesting development too.

Manages a lot of Tigers players (although Chol is leaving Narkle may take his place this offseason as another Tiger on his books).

And yet bizarrely we had some great results when the back up squad had to step in and some incredibly disappointing performances when the a-graders returned.

This would be a case of Eagles demanding it from Rioli

Rioli asked his agent to tell us about his arrest and his agent didnt do so and in that sense was gone in our books

Our A-grader talent is A-grade for a reason, but the issue we had was multiple A-graders returning after missing months of football while clearly underdone. It killed us.

That would depend on where 1st rounder's end up after trades.

The word is Cats would look use Clark in a trade to get back into the first round. On his own that simply won't happen so obviously a pick would need to be added.

Maybe its a future 1st who knows, its Geelong's call. But end of the day no way are the Cats trading Clark on his own for a 1st rounder......maybe pick 20 at a stretch. That's all Im getting at, Clark on his own isn't worth a 1st from what he has shown.

An unfit A grader is not going to perform at A grade level. What you described is a perfect example why a full fit and hungry B+ player can and does out perform an A grader who is not match fit.

Another thing for the coaching and selection staff to accept and act upon.

Not surprised really. Last few years he would have had some blunt conversations with the previous manager, embarrassing conversations VERY embarrassing.

So a fresh start with new management would be attractive to him. Clean air for a new start.

If Willie ever moved clubs it would be to one of Richmond or Gold Coast.

I also remember we offered a 2 year deal and he wanted 3 but a reduced rate .

He could very well be on 800k a year .
Doesn't mean we are paying him 800k probably more like 500k and the afl pay the other 300k

Why would we bother with SPP when we can just use West .
I see them being pretty even in talent and ability .

Save the pick for a draftee .
West is 183cm 80kg, SPP is 187cm 91kg.

Having said that i'm hoping all this talk of getting SPP is based on getting him for "free" that is a fourth/fifth rounder. No one is thinking of giving up actual value (our first rounder / 2 second rounders) for him?

Makes sense though. We've got a number of older players that have gone well into their 30s who would still be commanding a fairly decent salary on top of the inevitable increases from the guys coming through, either off rookie contracts or coming into their prime for a big payday. I'd be expecting it to free up considerably in the next 2-3 years and its up to the older guys, if they want to play on, to not throw the club under the bus and allow for us to pay the next generation fairly.
