Wow, just wow didn't think we could sink any lower than we have after our miserable season but hey we managed it. Freo nailed it with Amiss and Erasmus and will get Johnson just to rub it in our face.
It’s absolutely impossible to say anyone “nailed the draft” in the immediate aftermath of a draft, let alone part-way through it.

Whether they nailed it and we stuffed up, or vice versa, won’t be known for years.

Sorry my bad, guess the Eagles listing him as a medium defender on their website really threw me. Among countless other articles.

My bad.

Didn't I also post that? Chesser is a Medium defender / mid.

I can link you to all the other write ups listing him as a medium mid if you like.

You don't agree that teams need players to be able to play more than one position?

And that players when 18yrs old often start off in defense or attack before moving into the midfield. Like say Yeo did? McGrath at Essendon?

2017 Rising Star and pick # 1 Andrew McGrath
"The way I look at it is you get better and better every year until you get a little bit older so I am fitter and stronger than I was last year and hopefully I can have a lot more impact."

The Canadian-born half-back said he expected to spend more time in the midfield in 2018 after he finished the year alternating between playing as a dashing defender and midfield pinch-hitter.

So did Essendon use pick # 1 on a half back in 2017?

The most important facet of any top football team that i have ever seen is contested ball.

Why we would somehow put that at the bottom of our priorities list when recruiting players is beyond me

And if we dont address this with our remaining picks in some form I wont be happy.

Matt Roberts as a bare minimum is needed.

Everyone knows you can only address deficiencies with your first pick in the draft. No one ever picks anyone useful after the top 20.

Yeah the Oscar to the midfield thing was real shortly after the 2017 draft. Funny that it ended up being Brander that we tried to shove in there. This isn't the same thing though IMO. Oscar was clearly a KPP, but I don't see any reason why Chesser can't be a good wingman, which is something we're lacking.

I get that we're missing contested midfielders too, but 1 pick can't solve all our issues. We've tried to address at least one area of concern here while netting an extra pick for next year in the process. From that perspective it's pretty good business, but we will need to address our contested deficiencies soon or else we'll be in a very bleak spot when the older mids start finishing up.

Another thing to consider is that maybe we feel as though someone we like (e.g. a Matty Roberts) will be available at our second pick, and that the inside-outside combination of someone like Roberts paired with Chesser will be stronger than if we had gone for a contested player first and had to try and find outside run with our second.

We've only seen the first piece of the wholistic draft process, so let's buckle up and get ready for another round of melts this evening.

"He has an athletics background"
"Elite runner"
"Time trials! TIME TRIALS!!!!!"

Welcome to the club Chesser, you will fit right in. Never mind that you don't have a contested game and can't tackle, all that matters is that you can run and you are amongst kindred spirits

Got it. You refuse to acknowledge that Chesser can play on the wing as it doesn't suit your argument.

He's described as a medium outside mid / half back. Most players in the modern game need to be versatile and the difference between halfback / wing isn't a lot.

AFL draft 2021: Campbell Chesser huge jumper, reactions, social media, West Coast Eagles Pick 14, bolter (foxsports.com.au)

“He was joint captain with Ben Hobbs of that Victorian Country side. He’s a bit like a Paul Seedsman, he’s an outside runner, whether it’s on the wing or half back, he’ll break the lines over there on that fast track in the west.”

North Melbourne great David King thinks West Coast may have gotten a steal in Chesser.

“Massive penetration with everything this guy does. I think it’s a good selection for Adam Simpson and his crew, they knew he’d still be there, that’s why they slid back to Pick 14,” he said.

“Everything he does has yardage and metreage and that’s what they need.”
Too bad he only averages 16 possessions a game . Not very good for an outside mid

Also elite disposal apparently, but sure let’s focus on what he doesn’t have.

we cautious in using the term we all:

We cannot improve the game plan without speed.
Or better use of speed? We could always use more speed, but have sufficient speed, needs to be reorganised. At the risk of sounding repetitive much of 2021 was patched together due to terrible injury run, no consistency or chemistry, together with an aged game plan. Worth remembering our best midfielders never played a game all together in 2021 (correct me if wrong). You'd think the new coaches will address this and panel beat into shape an improved plan on last season, that addresses the new speed of the game and importantly the run and spread from the centre..
Having said that, bring on our new tall...?
Isn't there talk of Shep being out for all of 2022?
Early retirement due to concussion issues was the buzz...possibly lends some support to Chesser selection?

I'm just concerned we drafted someone with a disjointed knee in the first round:

“The last few years has been a long period of time, especially with my knee it’s been quite disjointed. But I’m lucky to have done enough early to get my name read out.”

What did Lewis Jetta average?

Well look at that shall we!!!!!!!!!!!!!:oops:;)

Highest disposal average was 17.1 in 2014.

Would you describe Jetta as a decent outside mid / creative half back?

LOL and guess when Jetta was drafted?

It was a heavily duplicated post from last night during the server meltdowns

And will now live on this board in perpetuity

Another thing to consider is that maybe we feel as though someone we like (e.g. a Matty Roberts) will be available at our second pick, and that the inside-outside combination of someone like Roberts paired with Chesser will be stronger than if we had gone for a contested player first and had to try and find outside run with our second.

We've only seen the first piece of the wholistic draft process, so let's buckle up and get ready for another round of melts this evening.

This is true and something it took a while to sink in for me following the first round of the draft last night. We still have two decent picks which AsterixTheGaul has listed a number of options that might still be on the board or we “might” be able to trade up for

Probably best to judge our off season in its entirety once tonight’s picks (and perhaps the rookie draft as well) are locked in.

And will a single first round pick solve ALL those issues you raised above?

No they wont.

It will take several picks over several drafts to solve all those issues.

Chesser ticks the boxes to address our speed and ball movement from defense into attack.

As for an analogy closer to the facts:

Buying a top shelf heavy duty 4WD to tow the boat is what my wife and I agreed was our priority.

Sorry honey, I just brought a fast, sexy SUV fo around town instead but with the money saved we can STILL buy a tough 4WD but a Hilux not a 200 series Landcruiser.

Or Sorry honey i bought a isuzu 2wd ute that can tow a trailer but isn't rated to tow up to 3500kg which is needed for the boat.

I'm not sure on Chesser, my main issue is that by all reports we could have picked him up later in the draft, if that's who we wanted we should have more aggressively traded back. Could have ended up with another pick that might have picked u MJ now he's slid as well.

Can anyone who watches a bit of WAFL give me a rundown of Rogers vs Clark? is there a reason why we seem to be more linked to Clark even though Rogers won the sandover and kicked twice as many goals, what other attributes does he bring?

Also elite disposal apparently, but sure let’s focus on what he doesn’t have.
Go and have a look at his interview by Rookie Me Central - his development area told to him by his coach was to clean up his kicking and be more consistent. Sarah Jones from Fox was the only one saying elite kicking - the others said long and penetrating.

What is not questionable is that he offers is outstanding run and carry with both pace and endurance.

I was just going off Knightmare who said that one of his strengths was finding targets by foot.
