Pretty sure this is Knightmare's (aka Chris Doerre) comments on ESPN re: first round talent:

1. Jai Culley

An overage forward and midfielder, the 193cm Culley has a case for being this draft's best kick, with his penetration, precision kick placement, vision, and the composure he shows with ball in hand. Culley is a weapon who takes strong contested marks, hits the scoreboard heavily, moves well, finds a lot of the football, and plays a high impact per possession game. Culley performed strongly in his first two rounds for Dandenong and was the standout in the Young Guns vs. Vic Metro game, kicking four first half goals, while managing game-highs of four score assists and two contested marks. If there were no mid-season draft, Culley would be worth a first-round selection at season's end.

(it won't let me post the link - google 'AFL Draft: Mid-season Draft top 10 Power Rankings' if interested)
He's best kick in the MSD with vision and composure (i.e. decision making skills).

They're the type of players we should be drafting.

So we've spoken to him twice and now Simmo will see him in person either tonight or tomorrow. Rival clubs believe we'll grab him. He's definitely more than a chance to be grabbed by us, gonna be some serious melts on Wednesday if we grab someone else.
Probably trying to talk him into moving west

Say Culley is otherwise worth pick 16, which seems more than fair given the Knightmate write up and the general discussion around him.

Go to the draft with picks 1/2, having already grabbed essentially pick 16, then 19/20 as our second rounder plus Port’s top 30 pick.

Gee. Is it time to become one of these losers who cares about the draft? We’ve got a great hand to play.

It sounds like it would be dreadful for the club’s future, but I would argue it’s borderline worth it for the melts.

Given we've rarely had top draft picks, largely because we regularly make grand finals, I have to assume our drafting overall has gone alright.
If I'd thought about it for more than 3 seconds I might agree with you but seeing as I wasn't really being serious I didn't.

One of our issue is our mid's and backline are mainly right foot dominant, easy picking for opposition and completely predicable when moving ball from Half back. Ever wonder why we stop a lot at RHB, player is a right foot kick. Draft inside and outside left footers until we have 50/50 balance. We are less predictable exiting traffic and stoppages, can center ball from HBF with more precision and they are generally better kicks anyway.

Jai Culley perfect start
I’ll go one more than that and say most of our players are very one sided with their hands and movement, not only their kicks, and are only good in straight lines. West probably isnt good enough disposal wise to get a game in a good side, but against Melbourne where he was dancing around everyone it was a breathe of fresh air. I can’t remember the last time I saw any of our players be nimble enough to attempt that. Also, can’t remember the last time I saw someone left hand handball out of traffic either. Far to predictable with our movement in traffic and it’s most of the problem with our contested ball

Can you imagine if the team drafts a player that this board wanted?
Nah this is going too well. Suspiciously so. Fully expect the entire recruiting team to be on board with Culley before being overruled by O’Brien in favour of some skinny kid with a clean haircut

Surely we’ve learned our lessons with the Burrows, Gorter et al type picks?

Rather than overthink things and try and find a hidden gem, go for the obvious pick, being Culley in this case.

I can just imagine O’Brien strutting in on Wednesday night and calling some random HBF’s name at pick one and trolling us all.

Melts will be nuclear.

To be fair we have first choice so thats a crazy first.

Im now getting excited.

Unless Simo turns up with O'Brien and Culley's cat attacks Simo and Culley's mum serves vegan party pies with sault free tomato sause ......well........looks like Culley is our guy!

:rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :eek::$:$

Well apparently Culley's Mum didn't serve anything - Simmo's polite high tea invite to the Culley clan was met with a very impolite text message back saying "not interested in the bbqs and being mates, just want to play football, and good football at that. Want to win this club their next premiership. Hit me back up once you get over your beach dog races and Harry Potter movie marathons and want to get serious about this football business. Regards, Cull "

Haven't heard word back yet from my insider on how Simmo took the letter. Monday night is the inner cliques mixed husband and wife touch rugby night - I might hear something back after that.

And the very next game he was demoted and sent to the HFF to die a slow death.

He clearly should be under the rucks nose as our number 1 ball winning mid . 6 years of going undrafted is a sure sign of how talented he is
In the one quarter he played on the ball (think it was his first game with us) he looked better than most of the rest of our midfielders have looked all year. So yes he should be played under the rucks nose.
