Not true. Show me a team that won a flag without a top 4 midfield. Off the top of my head I can show you 3 teams that won flag with only 1 or even 0 top tier KPFs. West Coast 92, 94 (Sumich and Langdon) and 06 (Lynch and Hansen).

We do need a dominant KPF to partner OA but why would you spend a top 2 pick? Have you not seen the numbers, or do you think we won't have other top 5 pick over the next 2 years?

Also consider the u18s game against Collingwood. Neither Lemmy or Scully dominated. That's a concern. I suspect they'll be dom in u18s carnival but against bigger bodies they couldn't do it. Why wouldn't you wait another year and see if there is that out and out superstar who can play against men next year?

As much as I'd love to take a mid (as our young mid stocks are horrible), if it happens that the clear best available is a tall - i think we have to go there. We can't overlook a generational key forward just because he's not a mid. Its abit worrying that there do not appear to be clear top mids this year (ie in that big and fast mode like most are now) - Wardlaw looks close but he's quite short and not really that new age size. I'm not saying he's a dud, but might be a good chance a Max King type forward is a better option.

I listened to a podcast recently and the Tiges took Tambling as they thought they needed his type more than Buddy...

Woosh took Ablett in 94 Sorry.

Brennan wasnt ever chf unless he played a mini cameo at some point

I was at the game and quite surprised at the time. Google wce 1992 premiership team.
Ablett played HFF and Worsfold played on him and it was Ablett that opened up his eye. The ginger headed forward and Brownless played key forward positions with Jacko and McIntosh picking them up.

Is there a generational key forward in this draft?

I don’t think the Tambling comparison is a good one. Wardlaw is a far more influential and well credentialed player than Tambling. The Tambling selection is one of the all time great draft blunders, I don’t see choosing Wardlaw falling into that categpry.

Still reckon that 92 GF was an under rated beauty.

Comebacks, great goals, big hits, stars playing well

As Dwayne says "Thats All time!"

100%

Matera's game was next level. Peter Wilson and Tony Evans playing important cameos, Malthouse shifting Heady from the forward line to the midfield. Don Pyke elbowed in the head by that dirty prick Ablett and Woosha and Langdon letting him know he was a marked man. Mainy jumping up and down on a proper ****ed ankle on the final siren.

Suma booting 6 went under the radar too, with Matera's game.

So good.

Do any of the talls actually look like a generational talent? (Never overlook a generational talent - Agreed)

Wardlaw is a little short for a modern mid but not that small. 182cm and 81kgs is not too bad for an 18yr old. He may grow a touch more and has a frame that look like it will bulk out in an AFL environment nicely.

As primarily inside mid, he's already taller than Parish, Miller, Laird, M.Crouch, Viney, Serong, Neale, Rowell, Ch Warner.
Heavier than the majority of them too.

"Generational key forward" huh?

If there was some sort of guarantee, I'd be all for it. Not only worth their weight in gold, be we do need to find this player. But the cold hard fact are, if you pick a KPF with a top 2 pick there is roughly a 75% chance of getting a dud. That's not an opinion, that's a fact.

Generally the "generational key forward" are super dominant and can play against men from the get go. Lemmy and Scully - didn't hear a peep out of either of them again Collingwood 2's. That doesn't mean they won't necessarily turn into "generational key forwards", but the percentages say choosing a KPF with a top 2 pick is a dumb idea.

We will have top 10 picks over the next few years. We need to wait. We need to play the percentages.

Yeah I’m not saying I know but some just want us to blindly pick the best mid, which I don’t believe in. If the tall is clearly the best pick, I think we have to do it.

Malthouse chucking Heady in the middle swayed things. Simpson just doesnt do these things

I’m not writing wardlaw off at all - it would have been great to get more of a beast you can build a midfield around (don’t think the guys you listed fall within that category)- like a Horne Francis - but not sure he’s in this years draft.

If the best tall is the next Buddy and the best mid is the next Masten then yes you would have to go tall.
Buy low, sell high!

We don't have a crystal ball unfortunately. Warlord may end up a dud and Lemmey the next Buddy. We just don't know though. The only thing we do know is the success rate of picking a mid with a top 2 pick is higher. Way higher.

Based on historical data from the last 20 years. You based yours off a sample size of 1 (the Tambling draft year).

Also, what's wrong with waiting until next year? That KPF who is more likely to be a generational player may appear.

Are the kpf’s this year generational talents?

WCE need a new generation of talented midfielders more than kpf’s.

And he plays a lot taller than he is. He came second in the vertical jump test and takes pack marks.
