If Ashcroft doesnt nominate Brisbane, wouldnt we seriously look at him?

Really cant wait to see what happens at Champs this year, along with the feedback from our draft watchers....

Ashcroft, Wardlaw, Sheezel, Tsatas, Lemmey, Sculley
I hope we stay the hell away from Sculley. I can see a team jumping early cos of lack of talls, Think Amiss last year but with horrible kicking skills.
Could end up like a poor mans Kurt Tippett except he cant ruck at this point in time.

I think Culley will be a great pick up in the long run.

Some of the best picks have been those that show rapid improvement in their draft year, like Oliver, Bont et al.

Culley may not of done that last year, but certainly has this year when he was moved into the midfield.

A goal kicking mid, decent speed, great long and accurate kick, with his size.. onto a winner I feel.

Culley showed enough given his trajectory. I would atleast give him a pre season (with a senior team) before judging him against draftees.

I wouldn’t mind us taking Toby McQuilkin in the rookie draft. Trained with us in the preseason and has had a consistent year off of half back for south freo averaging mid 20 touches with a career high 42 today against east Perth. Is still only 21. Anyone know anything more about him?

Ashcroft is our man if he doesn't nominate Brisbane. But likely will.

Was very impressive in last years grand final.

One for you to watch for next year.

Ah yes Nick "The Wizard" Watson as Twomey has been pushing for him to be called. Ripper skills no doubt.

I still think Culley was the better pick but Josh Carmichael is making an impact straight away at VFL level for the Pies. Still will be interesting to compare their career trajectories I think both clubs made good calls.

D'Ambrossio also had a good game on the weekend, different role to Culley as a rebounding defender though

I haven't seen much of Ashcroft. We know he's going to be a solid 300 game player averaging 25+ possession but would you agree War lord has a higher ceiling?

I've looked at warlords highlights his desperation is reminiscent of Willie Rioli/Rioli. The way he keeps tackling, presenting, going at it is really inspiring. Plays like a natural born leader. I'm just hyped thinking about him.

I think with Wardlaw even if he get's 15 possessions a game at worst he will be as good as willie rioli mid. He seems like a high impact player and I'll be honest if his worst is willie rioli level then is that really that bad for pick 1? If willie doesn't annoy us I 100% doubt war lord will.

Nisbett was quoted in yesterday’s West as saying that everyone thought it was a great trade at that time 🤷🏻‍♂️
Well he actually went a step further than that, saying "It was lauded as one of the best trading deals in the history of the game".
Totally delusional. And extremely concerning that they held that opinion. Literally nobody said that. Everyone thought we paid overs. They're obviously in their little cocoon patting each other on the back. I wasn't necessarily on the remove-Nissy bandwagon, but now I'm up front cracking the whip on those ponies. Combined with the appointment of his son into the recruiting team, him overseeing the current debacle plus obviously the mid-00's sheetshow, and his insistence that O'Brien Simpson et al are welcome for as long as they want to stay, I think it's well and truly curtains.

What would have been a better trade was our first pick and Brander the year before. At the time Brander was off the table? Then we gave him away for free a few years later and paid way more for Kelly anyway.

I keep saying this but Geelong wouldn't have traded Kelly that year no matter what we offered. When they asked for Brander it was the third demand they'd made after we agreed to the two previous. They kept shifting the goalposts. They wanted to keep him to his (cheap) contract. If we'd given them Brander they'd have asked for something else again until we either gave up or time ran out.

Looking at Culley on Saturday, I see him as a 2023 early pick. Don’t forget he joined the captain’s run in Adelaide on Saturday and was probably in at the club on Monday meaning a 19 year old is needing time to settle.

Let’s see in a month what he is like.

What I did like was us picking (a) the best genuine balanced midfielder available and (b) someone considered to have a decent ceiling.

In terms of mid sized defenders like Rotham, Foley, Witherden, Duggan, and Nelson, I am having real difficulties not knowing whether the current game plan is making them look bog average at the best or whether they are that bad.

Without the ball, we are playing an outdated zone whereby we guard space and these guys appear soft, appear to avoid contact and lack football IQ as they guard space and chase shadows.

With the ball they appear conservative, afraid to take on the game and slow as we chip from one side to another, have the slow build up, tentative and unable to hit fast moving targets.

As a junior, I thought Rotham was going to be a rebounding hbf. He then grew and in WAFL we tried to turn him into a KPD. He now looks lost.

Witherden was brought in as a precise kicking hbf. Since most of his kicks are from deep inside our 50, it’s hard to see why we got him when he is kicking way too often to a contest.

Foley when drafted as an over age made it as a winger with good foot skill and endurance running. I’ve never been a fan but last year thought he had improved by mid season and in the last 12 months has regressed.

Duggan is my most worrisome defender. In 2019 he looked like he was about to go to another level. He has stalled. Good enough to be in our best 22 but he is a long way back from where I thought he’d be as an emerging leader.

When Hough played hbf early this year, he looked fresh and prepared to take the game on. Without a change in strategy, Hough is wasted as a zone chipper.

There were a few instances on Saturday when Bazzo just killed the contest and looked more interested in defending a contest and not He’ll vent on intercept marking that I liked. But most of our WAFL strategy reflected our outdated AFL strategy.

Frustrating times ahead of us. If we cannot start trialling the new game in the second half in this season, it will be a lost opportunity.

Just going to remind you that NGA kids are not club tied in the first 40 picks.

They definitely need to make it the same for all NGA's including the QLD & NSW ones.
How is it fair that these teams can freely draft other teams' in the top 40, but other teams cannot take theirs?
Not gonna happen but maybe to make it more even, perhaps the AFL can restrict these teams from bidding on other teams' NGA players in the top 40?
It's not the other clubs' fault that NSW and QLD are not producing as many AFL players as VIC, SA & WA, so why should the rules be different for these teams?
If they want a place in the competition despite not being traditional aussie rules states, they should be subject to the same rules.
Brisbane Bears/Lions have been around since 1987 while South Melbourne relocated to Sydney in 1983.
It shouldn't necessarily need to impact the development of NSW & QLD players.
Even if these teams are considered to be responsible for their development, all teams should still have access to them if these teams are allowed access to other teams' NGA players.

Look, if it was up to me there wouldn’t be any academy or father son kids.

It would be a single unadulterated draft pool.

And draftee contracts would be 4 year’s minimum for first round picks. 3 years for second round picks, and two years for later picks.

In saying that, I’m pretty confident that Sydney and Gold Coasts academies are doing exactly what the AFL intended, in growing the game in the Northern states.

Gold Coast’s academy does a heap of work in regional towns, and State schools.

You have to remember, before the QLD academies, very few schools in QLD, public or private, played AFL as a school sport.

Public schools play rugby league and private schools play rugby union. School kids as young as 12 are being signed by NRL clubs, and receiving between $5k to $10k a year, plus free medical and dental, free kit and boots, and junior club membership, to join NRL teams development pathways.

Talented Kids here in QLD and NSW make money if the choose rugby league over other sports.

On the other side, the private schools offer scholarships to talented kids to play Union.

I know quite a few kids signed up to rugby league pathways also have scholarships to private schools. So they are getting the best of both sports. They are getting paid, getting a free quality education and get free medical and dental.

Back to AFL. There are a number of public schools in Gold Coasts zones, that now have AFL academy programs, and act as feeder schools to Gold Coasts academy.

Here in Brisbane, private schools started playing AFL two years ago. My old school has strong ties with the Lions, with a couple of the younger Lions players coaching some of the teams (Jaxon Prior is one the coaches).

I can guarantee that without the AFL introducing the academies here, AFL still wouldn’t have a presence at schools in QLD.
