If you’re going to grant them a PP, make it for the 2023 draft and force them to trade it to the highest bidder (like the mini draft for 17 year olds).

Therefore you’re not disadvantaging those that also suck (I.e. us!!), giving them the benefit of other clubs offering as much as they are willing to give and most importantly, everyone knows the rules heading into 2023.

Personally, I’ll scrap PP altogether and give them an extra mill in the soft cap to spend on development coaches or better recruiters.

Thought I'd revise my draft ranking half way through the champs, as there has been significant change. Champs always allow the best to go head to head and does really help separate the players.

Big Movers:
  • Cam MacKenzie was been one that has impressed me the most, and he's shifted from the teens to top 6.
  • Keeler is the second best KPP for mine, very durable and agile for 200cm.
  • Hayes, has gone from looking pretty good to second best KPD in this crop for mine. Quick, agile and good skills for a tall defender.
  • Verrall, half back but really does midfield potential. Great decision maker.

Sliders:
  • Lemmey, has been so poor at the champs that he's slipped out of the top 30. Does have the potential and could still end up top 5 if he finds his form again, 6 on the weekend in the SANFL will help.
  • Broadbent, almost non existent at the champs and for his sake I hope he's carrying an injury and not just the others catching up to him. Again slipped out of top 30.
  • Scully, started the year on fire but can't even get a game at the champs.

Desperately unlucky:
  • Jaspa Fletcher, really wanted to find a spot for him in the top 30 but couldn't drop anyone out, although he is top 30 talent. Figure that one out.
  • Phoenix Foster, kid has really impressed me as a ruck/fwd.
  • Coby Burgiel, half back for Vic Country who's been very impressive with ball use, run and carry and footy smarts.
  • Josh Weddle, mid sized defender who does everything really well. Behind others at Vic Metro who have just shown a bit more at this stage.
  • Got another 4 (Cleaver, Walker, Drury, Rowe) who just behind these guys.

For those who might be thinking Cowan, he's shown a lot through the champs that I really like but he turns it over by foot way too often for me to consider him top 35.

Your assuming Sheezel will be the next Chris Judd and or remain injury free
I think a good comparison for Sheezel is Connor Rozee - and we already have a decent preview of what he'll look like when he moves into the midfield. Draft Sheezel in 2022, and by mid-2026 you'd be hoping for him to be doing what Rozee is currently doing. That's top-20 in the league standard. To me, Sheezel looks to have the highest potential of this year's crop.

LDU getting more over-rated in this thread than he does on the North board.
They've been disappointed in him. They say his too much inside and not enough outside.

But he's a big strong contested beast and it was only a matter of time before he's in the top group.

Great observation and post, really good comparison in CR.

I think he's good without being great - but I can't see him taking his game to the next level. But in saying that I thought the same from Petracca's early years too. Not sure if he fits your "2 A+ grade mids to build around" status.

It's a time thing and he's playing in a shit team so will take longer. Other players get to blend and work themselves up the pecking order. He has to pretty much wait until he's good to stamp his authority (on the opposition) without those support systems.

And yes - I think he mirrors Petracca.

Who knows, but my gut he is one of those A+. Is he Jack Ziebell? Or is he Petracca? We'll know over the next 2 seasons.

Wasn’t Rozee also considered a flight risk?

From memory the flight risk was thought to be more so Izak Rankine, who GC did eventually end up taking.

Mind you, when that draft occurred, every single player that was drafted to Gold Coast was a potential flight risk, as players were leaving a sinking ship en mass.

I don't remember. If he was, it wasn't to the same extent as Bailey Smith. And I don't think you could say that he slipped due to a go-home factor - the clubs above Port would absolutely have been picking Walsh, Lukosius, Rankine and Max King regardless. But I bet Port were very happy to pick him at 5.

Hollands would be a good selection for a second rounder imo. Reminds me of Florent, seems like he's got a good all round game and a bit of leg speed. Will never be a superstar but would help rejuvenate our midfield and could play first year by the looks of it.

Might be able to convince his brother to move to Perth to join him as well

Rozee slid in some draft calculation due to the fact that he had a pretty ordinary championships ( well compared anyway, to his bottom age year ).
However he went back to North Adelaide after the championships and worked his way into the league team, he remained in the league team for the last month of the season where he played very well and he was a very solid contributor in The Roosters finals campaign and eventual Premiership.

I’m liking where these rankings sit in relation to our picks right now.

Wardlaw, Ginbey, Barnett

Yes please

I could very well be getting confused with Rankine and/or Smith.

TBH we should probably keep quiet about Priority Picks, given our fantastic history with them.

Judd
Shuey
Darling

They are 3 of our best-ever 22, all from priority picks (only one of those at the top of the draft though).

Start of 1st round priority picks should be very, very rare. Mid-1st-round I don't mind, and end-of-1st-round should be more common (to the point that if we were to win less than 5 games in 2023 I would argue we should get an end of 1st round PP).

Nth this year should get pick 11. A lot of their issues are self-inflicted, so that can't be encouraged by offering up picks 1 (earned) and 2 (PP).
I like Shuey but he would struggle to make the bench of our best ever 22 unless you're parking him on a forward flank.

Cousins, Judd, Kerr, Kemp. Shuey is not getting a gig.
Plus one Peter Matera. That's the five midfielders you need, so unless you're parking Kerr or Shuey on a flank (and they have to compete with dedicated forwards like Heady and Lewis), then the bench is the only chance, competing with the likes of Embley and Mainwaring.

Prime Yeo at his peak has to at least be in the conversation too. It's a shame injury has cut him down just as the rest of the AFL world were beginning to realise just how damn good he was - I recall Gary Lyon declared him the best mid in the game due to his two way running - it's like acknowledgement from GL instead of disdain somehow caused our current curse. Either that or the new club song (likely the club song).

I wonder instead of the HFF if Prime Shuey would be shoehorned into a running half back position (if we were trying to find an all-time B22 position for him), kinda like what we're doing with Jones atm. He would break lines and deliver a mean precision kick imo.

Port Adelaide warned Gold Coast publicly that if they drafted the S.A talent, namely Rankine and Lukosious that they would just get them back in a few years. I couldn't believe it at the time, especially considering the AFL didn't step in and slap them with a warning or fine for Draft collusion. Same thing happened with Ben King and St Kilda from memory.

If you did that kind of thing in the NBA you'd be expecting a 6 figure fine in the mail.
