I wouldve thought sam powell pepper always has been a much more damaging footballer than venebles, from tackles ,to possessions to goals he can actually do it all. Might not be the tidiest but much more impactful

The guy at that pick that we were linked to and I thought would’ve been a great fit was Berry.

Correct and in a recent interview Berry said that he thought he was going to be drafted by us .

So obviously we had put some time into him if he thought as much .

Spot on there - I was ready to celebrate picking up Berry. I was criticised by posters that he was a half back flank. Yes - that is where he played in his bottom age year for Vic Country but he had played TAC as a mid and he demonstrated loads of midfield attributes that would in my mind be ideal at the senior level.

Alas, it was not to be.

I thought Venables was a good player and filled one need but I did not go with the consensus that he was the next Shuey (only in facial looks)

I always though he was going to end up on the HBF. I didn't think he was going to make it as a mid.

the kid played an injury ravaged 21 games until he was finally KO'd - He showed definite glimpses of line breaking speed, goal sense and ability to win the football - to write him off as not a chance in hell of being a midfielder after 20 games and 20 years old, seems somewhat premature...

Alas, we will never know... we move on

I didn't say that. I think you were meant to quote the invisible man but accidentally quoted me.

Any chance we can get Josh Kennedy into some coaching gig for 2023.

He has a great ability for it. Would love to see him in our coaching squad next year in some position.

It's going to be sad this week. A Josh Kennedy less Eagles. Feel like I'm grieving. Just want the season over. Been a Loooooong season .

AFAIK moving to Geraldton next year with the mrs and kids as a test for a semi country life. If his wife and kids enjoy it there and are happy for an even quieter lifestyle that will lead them back to Northampton.

Stay classy Gero.

I guess its a perfect example of getting cute with draft picks. You need mids, draft mids..
Its not like venebles had shown he had immense midfield capabilities. The opposite in fact
Anyway he's gone now. I daresay his premature retirement is the only thing fueling the midfield debate

2018 - O’Neill (pick 28), Foley (31), Williams (35), Cameron (39-gone)
2019 - Jamieson (49), Johnson (58-gone)
2020 - Edwards (52), Winder (57)
2021 - Chesser (14), Hough (31), Bazzo (37), Williams (57)

Only Foley, Williams and Hough have played the minimum 11 games to be eligible

So a combination of no early draft picks (due to ladder position and the Kelly trade) and injury means there’s not much to go with

If we don’t have any in 2 years time then it’s time to panic

Also 7 other clubs had only one - Essendon, GWS, Geelong, Hawthorn, Richmond, North and St Kilda. Some of those clubs have been using more early draft picks than us over the same period

But don’t let any of that stop you melting

Not melting, just a reflection of where our lists at.

Hopefully next year we can get a few
