I hope NM can win one of their two remaining games so we are a Monty for Wardlaw. Desperately need some midfield grunt and class.
Surely north go Sheezle.

He gives them much needed half forward class - a bloke who can hit Larkey and Zurhaar while getting up the ground and giving plenty. Even more so if they lose T Thomas. Feels like he’s some much needed outside class for them which fits a need more so that a Wardlaw type

This is some depressing reading, and its justified too

This is fox sports best 22 under 22 squad of 40 before the cut off

The only team not to have a single nominee? Us

Our list is in very bad shape because we legitimately don't any kids banging down the door in the WAFL, and our selection policy means that our senior players will always be given selection precedence irrespective of how they play

We are in for some pain, particularly give how many quality young players Sydney and Fremantle have on their books for comparison

Warlord is my preference too, but there are still other quality midfield options like Phillipou and Cheezles.

Split the pick and grab two mids.

This kid I really like the sound of. Bolded in red.

DANDENONG STINGRAYS| INSIDE MIDFIELDER
Height:186cm
Weight:84kg
D.O.B:09-01-2004

THE WORKHORSE
A clean inside midfielder who is described as an animal on the training track, Szybkowski has worked hard to get the best out of himself this season. The Dandenong Stingrays and Caulfield Grammar standout is a beast at the stoppages and looks like one of the best exponents of the handball in this year’s crop. He links well with others and can rack up plenty of the ball himself, putting his side on the front foot as the source of many a stoppage exit. Able to make others shine by doing the hard yards, Szybkowski is the type of player who sets standards.
JUNE RANKING:
#8

LAST MONTH:
Szybkowski is incredibly unlucky to find himself sliding out of the top 10, having not done much wrong over the last month. In fact, he has done plenty right as one of Vic Country’s mainstay midfielders, waxing well with skipper Clark to win well over 20 touches across the two games. He has begun to showcase his running capacity a touch more on the outside, accumulating possessions both at and away from the contest. While not as flashy or damaging as others around him, he gets plenty of points for how dependable he is.

We don't need flashy, soft types and 1 single mid simply will not solve our problems. Setting high standards sounds exactly what we need. Split 1 or 2 and we can land a Busslinger / Hewett or even a sliding Phillapou. THEN we also grab a Szybklowski. Trade out one of this years 2nds (Ports) and a future 2nd for Lions pick 14 and land Hotton.

Darcy Jones later and a project ruck. 4 picks in the top 30.

Have West Coast ever had a Number 1 draft pick?
The draft was instigated in 1981.
As has been pointed out we have had two #1 picks. Not that bad really.

Adelaide have had 0 (according to some places Port are the only team not to have had a #1 pick. I cannot find any for Adelaide either))
Brisbane have had 4 (5 but traded 1990 to Geelong),
Carlton 5 (6 but lost one due salary cap breaches)
Collingwood 1
Essendon 1
Freo 2 (3 but traded 2001 for Croad)
Geelong 1 (and that was via trade from Bne)
GCS 2
GWS 3
Hawks 2 (actually earned - zero, 1 was traded from Freo, the other from St Kilda)
Melbourne 4
North 1
Richmond 3
St Kilda 3 (they got the 2002 Carlton salary cap breach bonus and previously traded the 1988 #1 to Hawthorn)
Sydney 1 (2 but traded 1992 to WC)
WCE 2 (both via trades)
W Bulldogs 3 (one as Footscray)

Port are the only club to never had earned or traded for a #1 pick.

I'd be really angry/disappointed if Rioli left after how the club stuck by him.
I would be too, but at the same time I can kind of understand if he wants a fresh start near some family members.
If he does leave I would hope he does his best to make sure we get fair compensation from the team he goes to.

Not surprised @ Richmond though, They seem to want our players with checkered pasts.

I am not sure that splitting the early pick is the way to go. We have split picks before and it hasn’t gone that well. We pick swapped down for Sheed and a later pick in the early thirties which was Karpany who was a bust. We split a pick to pick up two later picks who were O’Neil and Foley. Foley is looking like a bust and O’Neill is borderline after four years.
We need elite talent and the chance of getting that is much higher at the pointy end of the draft.

"Mitch Szybkowski" is a name that has 'cop in an 80s drama' written all over it. One who gets results, Chief.

We need LOTS of talent period.

And all we keep hearing is this draft is very speculative on elite talent.

That's been discussed over and over.

Sheed was a good split as wegot our main target just didnt nail the pick in the 30's.

The other you mentioned also late picks in the 2nd round.

We could still split and land a top 5 pick plus another 1st round selection. Totally different scenario to your examples.

North take Wardlaw, Lions get Ashcroft and Sheezel a flight risk. Phillapou with back problems already.

Who's left?

Lots of risk doing what you suggest. Lots.
Sheezel being a flight risk has been made up by people on here, haven't seen anything to suggest he actually is a flight risk.
Plus North might still take him.
Everyone is always saying the reason we don't have good young midfielders is because we never have high picks and the first time we get one you want to trade down.
Plus realistically who is actually going to trade us a highish first round pick and then another first round pick just for the third best player in a draft that is as you said earlier, speculative?

If Willie does go (hope he doesn't) i'd be asking for that pick 19. He's a premiership player with years left to go.
Hell, just having the Rioli name should incur a tax.
Or how about Rioli & Ports 2nd rounder for 19 and 29. Pushes it a bit further Richmonds way if they're reluctant to give up 19 straight up for Rioli

Id take that Rioli deal, also think splitting our pick is a good option. Think “elite mids only come at the top” is a huge overstatement.
