You do not force the current and former captains into retirement.
They've both earned the right to make the call on their future. It's a Premiership captain and Norm Smith medallist we're talking about.

It needs to be a mature discussion about where they sit in relation to the club’s direction not just for next year but beyond

They’ve earned the right to have input on that discussion in regards to what they can offer but ultimately it needs to be based on what’s best for the club

It’s not a clear cut decision either way and they need to make the case for continuing if that’s what they want to do whilst accepting there’s an alternative view

But we're also 2nd last with a crap midfield....shouldn't we want better midfielders than what we're currently trotting out, not more of the same?
I didn't say I want him, just that he ain't no orphan when it comes to poor disposal.

I'm all for whoever is available out of Phillipou and Wardlaw, with the preference being Phillipou. As far as I see it our 1st 3 picks should be mids with a Ruck towards our later picks. I think there are a lot of aging rucks in the system with a lot of young rucks, but very few in between or at the breakout age category that we could trade for. Statistically we've always done well with our ruck picks and I think this has been our downfall when going to the draft. I doubt either of the Williams boys will make it and Jamieson will have at least 3 years to get to a level good enough to take the role.

For those of us jumping on the Phillipou train here is an interview:

Good listen.

Kids very honest and I did love the sound of "The Eagles " that came out of his mouth.
I knew his day played for them, but I wasn't aware that his grandfather Peter also played over 200 games for them.

Also liked that he gave a shout out to Phoenix Foster, who is one of my favourites for a latter pick, our third rounder would be about where he comes into play, IMO , in the draft.

Port supporter but said, would be happy to go anywhere to pursue his dreams and isn't phased by going inter state.

I will be tracking his progression and development in the last part of the season for Woodville West Torrens.

He speaks well and there is an inner strength and confidence that comes through. :thumbsu:

Has the same confidence as Chesser and Culley. I think he will fit in nicely as part of the nucleus of the next Premiership.

That he does. :thumbsu:

Sees himself as a midfielder, try's to model his game on - the Bont, Fyfe and Pendels ....... got to love his confidence.
Also sees himself as being able to play as a forward too and values the dual role function, but he says he ultimately see himself as a mid at the next level.

Lot to like about this kid.

No one said they have to retire… if they want to play on it wont be with us..
Theres nothing to gain by keeping them, it just delays someone taking their over there gig another year.
And if the answer is leadership then it doesn’t say much for the other experienced players in the squad.

Bontempelli
Fyfe
Pendlebury

Two of these players are much better kicks than the other.

And the odd man out, is the same person that just so happens to be a narcissist.

One solution to the old guys and carrying them into next year is to have them act as development coaches/players for the Beagles.
Split their time so every few games they go back and work with the kids coming through in the 2nds, gives opportunity to the youth in the best 22.
If shuey/redden/hurn in particular are playing 23 games in the AFL next year we 100% are doing it wrong.

And thats why we need to keep Yeo and Shuey on the list for 2023. Chesser and Phillipou can rest forward and back with Yeo and Shuey giving them a chop out in the midfield. I think Hough moves to a wing. Be interesting to see how Simmo handles the transition from the credits in the bank crowd to the new order. Is it to late to throw our hat into the get Clarko ring?

People get too fixated on the older players in shit teams.

Does it really matter if we have 8 players over 30 in our best 22 next year?

For every one of Gaff, Cripps, McGovern, Darling, Naitanui, Shuey, Redden, Hurn you chop, you either bring in another late pick or keep someone on the list under 30.

We're not axing Kelly, Yeo, Ryan, Rioli, Duggan, Sheed, Barrass. Are we better off keeping Langdon, Nelson, Clark, SPS etc. over Redden or Shuey because they fit the age profile?

Collingwood have 5 players over 30 in their team this year and 4 more turning 30 next year. Hasn't stopped them from blooding 10 players born in the 2000s (**** I'm old) in the last two years. Father Time will defeat them soon enough but their young players are playing 10, 20, 50 games with Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Howe, Adams, Crisp etc. who have been part of the team for 5-10 years or more and played big games. Their 23 at the weekend had 8 players turning 29 or older, 7 aged 24-28 and 8 aged 24 or under. That's a reasonable profile to aim for next season.

Regarding moving interstate: "If it's going to be best for my football career then I'll do it"

Tbh it didn’t sound that convincing considering he started of by saying “I think every kid would like to stay in their home state” or something like that lol

1. Minimum number of players under 22 selected each week
That would surely sink the ship. Imagine if you're aged 23, BOG each week in the WAFL but are forced to sit behind players spudding it up and gifted games. B.Williams & Ainsworth ahead of the queue because of a selection policy. Look at South African Cricket, its a shambles.

You can count games as a commodity, so effectively anyone not in our long term future is a net loss of experience. When you look at last years de-listings we have best 22, regularly too good for WAFL and solid depth. Can't fault any games earned here:
Vardy
Sheppard
Venables
Ah Chee
Hutchins

These next list are the ones where we lose out on gameday playing a below average player, and lose list management wise in experience when de-listed:

Ainsworth (14)
Brander(22)
Cameron (12)
Collins (0)
Johnson(0)

After being at a club for two years you can tell if a player is going to be up to make the grade or not. Simply if you are not one of the best in the reserves, how will you be any good at AFL? You can't fault the selection in those first few years as a terrific learning experience at a low cost of a game. Cameron (12), Brander(3), Ainsworth (3).
However after that point you are effectively throwing away games of experience on what equates to a future fringe player or just burning them entirely on a player you cut.

As a strong club with a settled lineup that's only a net loss of 30 games. But heading into a rebuild & to be the best we need to make every post a winner.
Ainsworth never showed anything as a midfielder, likewise Brander as a KPP. If we just admitted they were bad selections and moved on that's 2 extra rookies to look at (sooner or later you'll hit and have 30 odd games into them).

I would be giving Simmo a mixture of KPI's for 2023
2. Contested football differential
3. Inside 50 differential
4. Successful implementation of new game plan (does not have to be perfectly executed yet)
2. I think Simmo doesn't get enough credit here. He knew outside of Priddis that we were dogshit at contested ball. Hence the Web, guarding space and kick mark game style. It worked and we have seen over the last two seasons when we try orthodox things we are quickly dismantled. Obviously going ahead we need new tactics but Ive always been a believer of you coach to your players strengths and not be Ross Lyon.
3. Is it even something you can affect? If you're good you'll naturally have more i50s
4. As in Q2 we need something new, yet we don't know what pieces we have yet. Naturally with a weaker team compared to the rest of the AFL we may have to play ugly footy to keep in games. Once we have our running game going again we can be that high scoring force which is a whole different style of play.
Id be getting on the phone to Pyke.

Something achievable win lose or draw not always match day:

-With just planning and management would be for development of multi positions. Similar to how Hough has played def and wing this year. Culley is a mid yet why not also learn fwd line procedures. He played the entire 2021 season as a fwd so its an opportunity to learn those skills now and be ready for the day we have bulk fwd line injuries or have a surplus of midfielders.

-Wipe the slate clean and have a clear cut selection policy. Just like when a new coach comes in everyone gets worried about their spot. Tell everyone that 1 good game here and there isn't enough. Play a month of footy to bang down the door and earn yourself an AFL spot. Pick your team R1 and stick with it without wholesale changes for a month. Selections like Tom Lamb should never happen.

-Club standards (have they slipped?) Things that filter down to WAFL level like if you give away 50m or get justly suspended you should be hauled in front of the whole playing group, smashed on the track, have to go a few rounds with Hurn, whatever. If Sicily played for us he either learns not to mouth off or he's out the door.

Don't think we have to stress about Shuey playing 23 games at any level tbh.
But you just know that Simmo isn't going to drop any of his older guys. If they're on the list and fit they'll play
