Very dramatic/creative layering in your quoting of me Badger however what i assume you are saying is you don't think Nelson will net us an end of 3rd round or fourth round compo. I wager you think we will get zero compo.
There's no end of 3rd or 4th round compo. 3rd round is the lowest there is and there's no way Nelson would get us that

I don't pay much attention to what Mick says these days. Talks a lot of absolute drivel. And there are countless examples of fringe players becoming good players elsewhere, particularly young ones. We've just done a very bad job of targeting the wrong ones of late (admitedly, most people could see that Langdon and SPS were not going to make much of an impact)
You also have to define a fringe player. Robertson has to overtake some pretty good midfielders to get a game with Brissie. Despite this he has played a few and doesn’t look out of place. In fact he looks good and is pretty tough in the clinches as well. Mick probably wouldn’t have taken Will Brodie either as he couldn’t get a game for the suns but he’s done well for Freo

Let me ask the Watermelon baggers a question:

If we draft Georgeades (who I rate) and next year Georgeades plays 22 games and Watermelon plays 0, how much better are we going to be?

answer: not much.

Waterman is a 3rd tall who is a fringe player. He doesn't really matter in the big scheme of things. Our mid field gets beaten week in, week out. Once we get games into our new midfielders, Waterman either sinks or swims. Maybe even before that. Maybe we draft a 3rd rounder this year who is better?

How good or bad Waterman is, is largely inconsequential to out rebuild
Being a 3rd tall to Kennedy and Darling is tough as well. They have been focal points for so long now a 3rd tall has to be frustrating. Oscar did it because he is a better mark, a bit bigger and reads the play better. Waterman is listed at 193/194 cms so is a decent size and works hard but to me he just stops and is out of the game a fair bit. Could improve with Kennedy gone but if not, possibly see if he can get a decent run in another position

That’s an absolute no brainer.

However it won’t get to that, a deal will be done between Adelaide and Gold Coast.

But if Rankine was available with a pick in the PSD …. you call his name out in a heart beat.

Our recruiters would get tarred and feathered if he was available and they didn’t pick him up.
Worst case scenario, his is pissed at us and won’t play….. so at the end of next year we trade him for a first round pick…alternately…. He plays for us reluctantly…. enjoys playing at a real club , in front of 50K crowds and becomes a 200 game player.

Let’s not fool ourselves, we desperately need an infusion of young talent, and if the opportunity arose as suggested …. You pounce.

Absolutely. Goes without saying...and North would too. Which makes what Rucci is saying a bit odd.

Unless we are doing GC a favour (for whatever reason) by making sure the Crows know they have to cough up

By way of comparison this is the list of last years FA signings and the compensation received :

Jake Kelly - Adelaide to Essendon (3rd round)
Mabior Chol - Richmond to Gold Coast (End of 2nd round)
George Hewett - Sydney to Carlton (End of 2nd round)
Luke Dunstan - St Kilda to Melbourne (No compensation)
Tim O’Brien - Hawthorn to Bulldogs (No compensation)

We aren’t getting any FA compensation for Nelson

This thread moves so fast that if you stop reading it for half a day you miss 5 pages... of majority crap. I wish I could complain with more conviction about it but being a mostly crap contributing poster that'd be a bit hypocritical.

Are we still on Devon Rodman and Wardlaw?
I am reading your post 5 pages behind . Devon Rodman and Warlord was gold . Hoping I find more gold in the next 5 pages . That's why we keep coming back . 🙂 Sorry to everyone else that is up to date that I reply to a 5 page old post . That's why it keeps cycling I guess .

To get no compensation you basically have to get paid in the bottom 30% of your pay bracket. So those guys obviously went for opportunity not money.

Exactly ^

There's "having 30+yr olds in a rebuilding side..."

And then there's "Having 30+ yr olds be the focal point of your rebuilding side playing each week and giving limited opportunities to your young players.." aka not an actual rebuild
You use the word rebuild . If you are going to accept this analogy then you have to accept that buildings have a foundation. Rebuilding a foundation that continually deteriorates is an art . It's also like building on sand because the team ages and changes every year . Someone mentioned more than 5 pages back Melbourne turfed their old players and were in the wilderness for decades . Norf kept their oldies too long I would suggest . It's difficult to say who did it / does it best . Hawthorn? Geelong ? Sydney?

My understanding is compensation based on age and value of new contract. Even if he finds a new club, which I’m not 100% sold on yet, would he be on anything other than a cheap ‘prove it’ deal?

Not sure his deal would be on anything close enough to earn compo. Would take anything we got for Nelson as a massive unexpected bonus.

Edit: Keys is onto it.

I didnt make it to AFL level and I am sure it was all my coaches fault.
One guy, or a whole handful of guys, sure. But the whole team turning up like it did for the last 3 years. Sure buddy, I know what's more likely.

I don't think we're the type of club that would do that..

I can't imagine he gets to the PSD but how does this make sense:

Who’s going to have the number one pick in the pre-season draft? North Melbourne, but you don’t expect them to go down that path

Assuming North don't win this weekend, why on earth would they overlook picking up a player of Rankine's calibre as a literal free hit in the PSD? That would be an insane move.

P.S. A deal will get done whether it's Rankine staying at GC or a trade to Adelaide or Port.

He'll put an 800k price tag on his head, North mustn't be able to fit that in their cap.
