We won’t bid on Ashcroft with pick 1. Like Diacos/JHF last year the team with the first pick will pick an eligible player. There’s a lot of cachet with pick 1 and having them on your team. Team with pick 2 will bid on him.

We aren't Norf. To the point that we don't even really need any more supporters, as when we are going well they can't get to a home game anyway (we have too many members... most years....).

If Ashcroft is the best player, we should bid. full stop. If Wardlaw is better in our eyes, then take him, but current consensus is Ashcroft is slightly ahead. Why would or should we do anything other than select the best player for us with our pick. If someone has the right to match then so be it - but it's never guaranteed until they do it.

He is a contributing factor though. If he stood up and played well he would be a contributing factor to the rest of the players. He is a very Senior player in the team.
He has to rise above his pre season bullshit and start inspiring those around him.
All our forwards have been getting limited/shit service. Coupled with fact he didn’t do a preseason with the club I didn’t have expecations different to what his actual output

His effort hasn’t been the issue.

And like the year before with JUH/Thilthorpe.

Thing is he still actually could drop Darling if he wanted to..
He could move barass or mcgovern forward and have played Bazzo down back… he could have played hough for the full game.. he could have had Dixon play his role and had a smaller forward line..

Theres options if he actually wanted to do it.
Then you're gifting games to a player who hasn't earned them. Id say equally bad business.
I have no problems with putting your best team on the park this year in particular. Right now even at 50% Darling produces more than J. Williams and will be improving fitness & game reflex each week. Same applies around the ground for most players.

There are 3 potential outcomes:

We bid, they match, we then take the next best player.

We bid, they don't match

We don't bid (likely because of a deal - i.e. a trade and handshake agreement)

He's meant to be the best player in the pool, so even if there is a 0.0000001% chance they don't match, we should bid as he is exactly what we need. The question is not what do we get from bidding, but how would we feel if the team after us bid and it isn't matched (it will be, but still).
If Ashcroft nominates us, there’s no way in the world we aren’t matching.

Well , why is he being mentioned to be dropped if we had availability of players to choose from ?

Form?

He’s putting in, he’s running his arse off, he’s tackling and chasing. He’s getting poor delivery, and he’s getting beaten by his opponents too often.

If we get it wrong it's 10 years in purgatory. Murphy couldn't kick straight, Gibbs was soft as butter, and Kruezer, despite the injuries, you don't pick a ruckman at #1.

I think the recruiters are a bit wiser these days and anyone with a questionable kick or a ruckman doesn't get picked.

There isn’t consensus.

Most of the Rookie Me Central draft watchers have had Wardlaw at 1 since last year.

Ashcroft 2 or 3 depending on who’s list your reading.

I feel like its a bit of a dick move in bidding on ashcroft

We have a very good trading relationship. We got Yeo for a steal. Witherden, let's not go there.

Many other players

Keep the relationship AND / OR or a gentlemans agreement on a future IOU.
Give us Robertson for later picks and we promise not to use pick 1 on him.

They save 386 points if he gets a bid at two, not one.

Give them our third rounder ~480 points. That’s a equivalent of 869 points, or equivalent of pick ~21-22. Win win.

If we'd had pick 1 in 2008, I'd still have picked up NN. never say never.

The point is that brisbane have to match. They can’t get anyone close to his quality with their first rounder otherwise.
