Yep, assuming we have pick 1 we bid on Ashcroft (surely Brisbane match, but may as well still bid as he is the best player in a position of need for us), then Wardlaw.

Obviously champs may change this a little - but generally it solidifies it more than changes it.

I'm never clear on this, what do we get out of bidding for Ashcroft and making Brisbane match?

We take Brisbanes pick out of the equation. Brisbane could still use there 1st pick on a player we like and then just have to use points from later picks to match a bid afterwards.

Per PerthNow:

"West Coast coach Adam Simpson has not ruled out dropping out-of-form senior players, including Jack Darling, but claims his hands are tied with the Eagles’ nest currently empty."

This is the first time i can remember hearing such a narrative come from Simpson, i am guessing the internal pressure and fan backlash are starting to mount. Its still talk and no action, but its a tiny step in the right direction

Forces them to use picks of equivalent value to pick 1 (minus discounts) instead of pick 2 (minus discounts). Weakens their draft hand a little, forces them to pay the maximum for who is already dubbed the best kid in the draft

Easy to say you'd drop people when you can't though.

I agree. That's why at the moment its still just talk

Next year will be Simpsons chance to demonstrate these things. He will be given next year to see if he can steady the ship per se, but if he offers up more of the same and its still the "credits in the bank" selection policy............his papers will surely be marked

Is the thinking we get something from Brisbane if we don't bid? e.g. one of their lower picks?

It could help us in another trade (ie a promise not to bid at pick 1).

Another big advantage is that our draftee avoids all the psychological baggage of being pick 1 and everyone expecting them to be Chris Judd.

Brisbanes First this year, second this year, first from next year and Robertson for pick 1 and our second next year?

I'm not saying it's the best option but for Brisbane it gives the opportunity to pickup Ashcroft and Wardlaw.

They’d really struggle to get points for Ashcroft if they trade their first two picks this year.

#17, #35, #22(2019), #15(2023)
Why we helping Brisbane out for?

Simpson lacks integrity at selection. The week we brought in Yeo, Kelly and Shuey (all under done), he dropped XON and Hough after a gutsy win. XON had 24 disposals and was one of his better games and Hough had 15 disposals off the half back line (and these were not padded with cheap chip and kicks like Witherden and Hurn.

If he wants to drop Darling, then bring in J Williams. He may of only had 6 disposals and a goal but this was on only 28 inside 50. I don't care at this point if our season if this weakens us - it starts to set standards.

And if you drop them, make them play WAFL. Why was Yeo on the plane to Sydney and not playing WAFL?

Thing is he still actually could drop Darling if he wanted to..
He could move barass or mcgovern forward and have played Bazzo down back… he could have played hough for the full game.. he could have had Dixon play his role and had a smaller forward line..

Theres options if he actually wanted to do it.

Yeo at least played a 1/2 of WAFL game the prior week.

Dont we want Wardlaw? Why we helping Brisbane get the two top talents in the draft??

He can just put a witches hat at CHF. It won't kick a goal in the 4th quarter but when you're being done by 10 it doesn't really matter anyway.

We could say we will take Ashcroft and see what sweeteners Brissy has to persuade us to not call Ashcroft s name out with Pick 1 ..

I'm never clear on this, what do we get out of bidding for Ashcroft and making Brisbane match?

There are 3 potential outcomes:

We bid, they match, we then take the next best player.

We bid, they don't match

We don't bid (likely because of a deal - i.e. a trade and handshake agreement)

He's meant to be the best player in the pool, so even if there is a 0.0000001% chance they don't match, we should bid as he is exactly what we need. The question is not what do we get from bidding, but how would we feel if the team after us bid and it isn't matched (it will be, but still).

If he can’t drop Darling put him in defence and make him chase and tackle .. Send Gov fwd for the whole game ..

We’re most likely going to have a pick between 15 and 18. There’s no way in the known universe that we’ll get to use our first round pick if Ashcroft nominates us.

Matching both Ashcroft and Fletcher will wipe us completely out of the draft, and most likely see us carry a deficit in to next year’s draft.

See my answer above.

If that was genuinely on the table, I’d do it in a second. Only I’d be asking for your third round pick in this year’s draft as well.
