I went to a school reunion recently - "kids" I taught decades ago - one kid greeted me saying "you treated us better than we treated you" - - not my recollection - I thought they were a great group

I was never a great disciplinarian. I am sure I treated students better than they treated me. But I was also able to handle students that other teachers didn't waste a second removing from their classrooms. If you are going to exercise lax discipline, you have to find a way to restrict the misbehaviour of your most destructive disruptors, so my energies were channelled into seeking ways to get them onside.
