2nds Crows in SANFL season 2017

I am really interested to see Greenwood take giant leaps this season. The first steps will need to be made in the SANFL. I hope to see some dominant midfield displays that lead to him being upgraded and force his way into our undefeated AFL side. :)

But it will be interesting, especially early. I have the impression that Siggy is perhaps not ready to have an impact. But I can't wait to watch him and all the other recruits play. I am really looking forward to seeing Jars play when he is ready. I hope he gets a game this season.
If Jarman plays this season we will be miles away from the pointy end

lese than 2% chance he debuts this year

Its gonna be like CEY all over again. Project player picked up in the 60s that has some nice traits to him but needs a lot of work in other areas and is a good 2-3+ years away from getting anywhere near AFL standard. Let the raging debate of will he/won't he on this board begin.

Hehehe. Well the debate on CEY is not over. He is looking fit and motivated. I dont see it personally, but it could happen.

But I think these type of sub plots are a massive part of the fun. The Siggy chapter is something that I will enjoy reading about and occassionally having my say on for the next couple of years. At the moment I am finding the Greenwood sub plot very interesting and hoping that will become notable in 2017.

You mean SANFL right? I dont care really. I want us to win a SANFL flag, but more importantly I want to develop every player on our list as fast as possible. I would have thought Jars would be up for games in the SANFL.

Will BJ be good enough to earn a place in the SANFL side in 2017? He didn't even play reserves in 2016, or played a handful of games at best. Could he follow Doedee's path, from early 2016, not playing SANFL until the coaches determined that he was up to it? Doedee was far more advanced than BJ is, at the equivalent time, so BJ could be waiting a lot longer before making his SANFL debut.

Wonder when the captain will be announced. Hopefullly Thommo so he can take the youngsters under his wing. Kinda like Podsys role in his last year.

Thommo won't be captain, he'll be focussing on himself and working his ass off to play 1's. No different to VB last year. Accepting captaincy is giving up, that will not be happening.

Woah hold up here, Doedee played every game in the SANFL when fit. I believe he had a slight injury concern at the start of the year that held him back a few matches.

Jarman will absolutely will play SANFL when available and fit.

Probably not. But if we want him to develop we need to play him. Which is why I said, I would rather us focus on developing our players than have a win at all costs attitude and only play our best in the SANFL. I think we should take a similar approach in the AFL in the games against the bottom 6 or so sides. There is little point winning by 10 goals when that type of performance will have little to no effect when we come up against Sydney in a final. I would rather we give 2, 3 or even 4 developing players that are not best 22 a game against your bottom sides like Brisbane and back that team to still take the points. If they are not best 22, then I would like to see us give games to Doedee, Kelly, CEY, upgrade and play Greenwood or Keath, Gallucci, Poholke, possibly even Himmelberg. This will weaken our side and cost us percentage and even risk top 4 if we drop points. But if it is measured the benefits will outweigh the risks in my opinion.

Personally, I think hammering a weak side does more damage than good. It gives a false sense of superiority, causes complacency and papers over any cracks that might exist.

Why not give the captain to an emerging player that is fighting to play AFL. Like Kelly? Keath seems to be a leader. Or we could try the Tex approach with Dear. I didn't see Tex as a leader until he was one.

Doedee was off knee tendinitis though wasn't he?

It kind of pigeon holes the player as an SANFL player. I would have thought VB or Otten would have been ideal SANFL captains but the club preferred a top up player to be the teams ultimate 'leader'.

I dont see why it has to though. It should develop their leadership skills. But if it doesnt enhance their development, then dont do it. Some players take it to the next level when given captaincy. It enhances them as a player. All any player that plays in our SANFL side can do is play good footy, so if being skipper can improve somebody then he is closer to playing AFL.

Captian of the SANFL, They should go with a leadership type group and pick one that playing SANFL to be the captain on the Day. It would save Rucci from writing an article when they are forced to drop the captain like last year.
As it stands the SANFL Captian for the Crows was only for SANFL promotional shots. On-field leadership came from a different source, ie Ottens, VB, Grigg, Beech.

So we have a precedent... Back to the original question. Will BJ play from R1, or will he be held back until he reaches SANFL standard?

I don't think that was anybody's question. Question was will BJ play SANFL this season. I think he will and I am hoping he thrives under the expectation.

I'd be surprised if Jarman was held back even if he wasn't really ready. Keath, not having played AFL for years, is an exception due to his different circumstances

Allow me to rephrase... will BJ play SANFL from R1, or will his entry into the SANFL be delayed until the coaches think he's ready to play at that level?

Keath definitely had a unique set of circumstances - partly because he was out of the game for so long, partly because he spent much of the pre-season playing cricket.

However, I can't think of too many draftees in recent years who have been less developed than BJ when they arrived at the club. The scum who defected to the bottom of the harbour team is probably one - but he was far more advanced physically, even if he'd only played a handful of games in his entire life.

I don't disagree, but the club made a fair statement by appointing a part-timer as captain ahead of many professional footballers. Having an ammo as captain ahead of the greatest ever captain of the club suggests to me that no listed player wants the 'honour' or the distraction. They're all hell bent on concentrating on their own game and what's needed to get into the 1's. Only declining/mediocre experienced players get or stay in courtesy of leadership. Kids need talent and SANFL runs on the board. Captaincy of the 2's is the furthest thing from their mind.

Apparently. I thought (mistakenly) that they gave him a couple of weeks of extra training before bringing him in. Turns out I was wrong.
Might be Keath you're thinking of. He came in late cause of his cricket commitments so spent the first 3-4 weeks of the year doing a mini pre-season before he played SANFL games.
