Berry and Parnell are the 2 that confuse me.
Borlase was always keeping the seat warm for Butts (no pun intended). Berry is not a forward and I cannot see how he can be in the same team as Crouch and Laird. He also hasn’t played since being dropped.
Parnell is just too small.

We need to see what Cook can bring but I feel this was time for a statement from Nicks re Dowling… you play well and you come in, you play poor and you’re out… ie maintaining a standard.

Same old, same old from Nicks, the underperforming seniors remain while the kids chop in and out.

Boring game plan, vanilla midfield, odd unbalanced selection policy. The squad peaked under him last year and we are now in freefall without a competent pilot at the helm. It’s going to get ugly.

Really Murphys role was to apply forward tackle pressure. Berry will probably take that role instead of a midfield one. Parnell to the wing for Sholl, Cook forward for Peds and Nank HBF for Milera.

Feel it will be a very similar game to the Geelong one,

Will have some 'glimpses' of OK play but ultimately look that slightly inferior team.

Frustratingly a somewhat 'gallant' close-ish loss will be the worst case scenario as will give some more false hope to Nicks and he can wheel out that cliche "Not far off, shown we are competitive against the best" etc etc. :embarrassedv1:

Three unforced changes is a statement of sorts, I guess.

Matching up the ins and outs, I guess it's something like:

Borlase -> Butts (obvious)
Milera/Sholl -> Nankervis/Parnell
Murphy/Pedlar -> Berry/Cook

Presumably the replacements for Murphy and Milera will be in for some time, but it's not clear to me which two players they are. Is Nankervis taking a rebounding defender role or a wing role? Is Berry going to spend much time up forward or just play in the guts? Hard to say.

Anyway, time for our annual "least watchable game of the season" loss to Melbourne :(
3 changes isn't a statement. Its what every other club does every week.

Not from how they trained last night.
Parnell hbf
Nank wing
Berry mid

You seem overly optimistic. They've had 5 years to see we need a new midfield and they've recruited flankers and keys. Our recruiting team won't be watching this game.
Agree.. the recruiting has been a massive let down and need to be accountable. I think its time for Reid, Ogilvy and Co to be shown the door.

I am concerned we dont have the cattle.

Just want a good game tonight, pumped af for Gather Round in general and can’t wait to see our city pumping! Heading in for the Rush Hour collab at the District pre game, so could be a few beers in by game time haha

Usually when this board hits a super depressing state and media all write us off we jag a win against the odds, so fingers crossed we start off Gather Round with a bang!

Which will be bloody useless unless they go on the rest of the year like that.
Don’t give me a one off win.

Of course, but a win on a big stage like tonight should give them a fair bit of confidence, which should correlate with better ball movement and scoring like 2023.

Dawson is currently rated one of the worst kicks in the AFL this year, that’s not just on the midfield mix, it’s a guy down on confidence and form (he didn’t have any issues playing in the same setup end of 2023). I think that changes tonight, a bit like his dominant Gather Round performance last year.

The only thing giving me hope is remembering that "ring the bell" match a couple years ago when absolutely nobody thought we could beat them and we got over the line by a point or something, with Murray (or was it Doedee?) getting away with the most obvious deliberate you've ever seen in your life in the last few seconds.
TBF, they had a golden run of frees to get them over the line at the MCG last year (and non-frees to us). Another of those close ones we should've won.

Why would they still care? They won the flag that year and it was 3 years ago. If they are holding onto that loss they are mentally weak as piss

They were caught off guard and wouldn't have forgotten about it a few years later

Our only chance of victory is if Melbourne decide not to show up and play like shit
