In regards to the Elsternwick v Hawks 2's game on the weekend:

As noted already here the umpiring from the Hawks' umpire was fair and even handed, and well done to him particularly for umpiring the first half of the game on his own. It is a tough gig to be a 2's umpire and they should all be given a lot of credit just for getting out there each week, more often than not copping flak from both sides. It is nice to see this issue has been put to rest (for the time being at least)

In regards to the Hawks player who went off following an epileptic fit, all reports are that he is doing fine.

In regards to 'Wheels' going off in an ambulance - It is fair to say that no player or supporter of any football ever wants to see someone have to be taken from the ground in an ambulance.
In this case there must have been some head contact, that is evidenced by the presence of his injuries. At the time, however, no free kick was paid, and no players from either team seemed upset at the contact.

I speak for myself and I'm sure all my team when I say that I hope Wheels is alright and will be back on the park soon. As I said, it is a sobering thing to see someone get injured in footy, especially when that injury is to the head, neck or back.

It is disappointing to see accusations fly around after the event.
To label this a "Cowardly act from a cowardly football club" is to generalise to extremes. It is a shame to see people paint an entire club with a brush tainted by one incident which, as I said, no-one viewed as improper at the time. That being said, everyone is entitled to their opinions, and it is these opinions and passion which makes this forum interesting to read.

How does everyone think they're travelling so far this season now that we are into the Mid Season (1 game short) break?

"By car generally?

:p"
That's what you get for trying to inject some levity into this forum, Coach !

How does everyone think they're travelling so far this season now that we are into the Mid Season (1 game short) break?

Instead of continually fishing from other clubs ....... why not try and start with how the "shells on their backs" are going themselves!!!!! How our the turtles currently cockroach??
:(

Well we caught a bus last weekend to Doveton btown.

I'll put in my my review of all the clubs tomorrow, maybe Thursday as i'm working on it now.
The Turtles are rapt with their start to 08, wouldn't you be at 6-2????

Not being associated with D3, was a fly on the wall at the Tribunal last night, Pace 2 weeks. Beware D3 and all other grades, because we now must be following the AFL in consistently changing the game. Be it known that wrestling and jumper pulling is now an uduly rough play charge worthy of three weeks. Two players last night were outed for three weeks for what all and sundry had stated was purely a bit of male push and shove. I know that one of the guys, there from one club, who also umpires was livid, not only about the report, but the fact he was excluded as a witness. What is this league coming too, maybe the decision to suspend the players was justified, because the umpire told the tribunal he was pissed off that he had to cancel appointments to attend the hearing ( as both players refused to accept the set penalty). I also overheard the excluded witness talking on his mobile, stating that both players stat dec,s were excluded from evidence. Maybe if his name had of been skippy , he would have been included in the kangaroo court.

What a joke. The VAFA appear to be trying to corner players into taking the prescribed penalty regardless of their innocence - it's just not worth the risk of arguing your case, you'll end up being slapped with an extra couple of weeks.

6 - 2 is a super start. You must be so proud to be doing better than your nemesis club, UHS-VU. Still can't see you troubling Willy in August/September though, they are one slick unit (or perhaps a group of slick units - either way they are cruising at the moment).

unduly rough contact apparently means something worth reporting that doesn't fit under a certain charge. Or that is the umpires interpretation. What a joke for a bit of wrestling you can get rubbed out for more than striking a player

Best thing about Willy's early season form is that they have used over 40 players in both sides and still winning..

have to agree with the Rotational Hyphonator ... there is a lot of upside with Willy and it will be interesting to see whether it goes up a notch after a weeks rest and anything up to 8 senior players back

looking forward to the Turtles away in a couple weeks

Speaking of 6 – 2, hawthorn is continuing to win by huge margins each week, without anyone tipping them? They beat St Johns by 100 points, and it was simply said, “St Johns put in a poor effort”. They dismantled the wicks away by another lazy 100 points, and the only issue that could be focused on was that someone was, sadly, seriously injured in the 2’s game, and the opportunity was taken to pull out the “cowardly club” label.
It seems pretty obvious that either no one is watching them, or everyone is clouded by some kind of prejudice towards them.
I think its time credit was paid to what this club is actually accomplishing each week, and all the regular contributors to this forum should consider shelving their pet hatred and pay them some credit.
Willy’s have depth and class, but the hawks are steadily building each week, and are still waiting for Dan Lauletta to return.

Here’s hoping everyone’s bodies enjoy the break.

White Lightning, your joking right.... steadily building? They got pumped by Willy, who by all accounts played rather average at Hawthorns ground and Eltham will have no worries either......!
Get serious, Hawthorn are OK but, like the canteen food...... merely average.

oh ho! more classic dee three canteen food humour, please stop my sides are bursting. yes they got beaten by willy, and as i've said willy is one very smooth side, but the point i was trying to make is hawthorn, who have a very new and young list, really are coming together well and it's showing on the scoreboard in the last few weeks. So they deserve to be treated with some respect in my opinion.

But of course, eltham, and then willy again in the next few rounds will be the litmus test.

Hey... Any news on the injured Elsternwick player? I hope he's ok. We had a player break 3 bones in his lower back in a preseason game this year who was "lucky" and is starting to run again now thank god, but wont be playing footy again. I hope the same will be said for the Elsternwick Player (as far as him being fine that is).

bigwaz.

The season so far in 2008.....

Williamstown - 8-0
Flying at 8-0. They have quality all over the park! Lee is obviously their most important player based on his results so far this season but their midfield is just as dangerous with Taylor back to his best, McGuiness & ***** helping out, Wong kicking goals and Elliott, Lishman & Hynes constantly in the best players, they are the team to beat. The depth is also their Key to success and getting them on an off day may be the only way to beat them??? The bad news is that if they can get Wheeler up and fit they'll be even stronger. (Short price premiership favourites so far..!)

Hawthorn - 6-2
At 6-2 and after finishing 2nd after home & away games last season, I can't believe they weren't expected to be a contender?, and after flying under the radar for the first 8 weeks, I think now everyone is starting to consider them as a premiership chance (I am) with the likes of Ogge in career best form, Lauletta to come back and Aitken getting plenty off it in the midfield supported well by a lot of good youngsters their 2nd place at the break is well deserved and they will be right up there come finals if they continue with this form. (Expected Finalists…!)

Eltham - 6-2
Apart from a disappointing 1 point loss at Doveton last week and the only other hiccup being another away loss to the other ExD2 side & short price favourites Williamstown by a couple of goals, I think the start to the season so far for the Turtles could not have been much better? Lots of consistent performers and good depth along with having showed they are good enough in this higher grade so far which will keep them confident for a just as good 2nd half of the season. Must continue to win the home games to confirm as (Hopeful finals contender….!)

St Johns - 5-3
Maybe a season turning victory last week as their captain mentioned in the rooms after the game, may well be quiet disappointed in their results so far after coming down from D2 but buoyed from their Home Ground form and if they were to pinch a few away in the 2nd half then they should still make finals, Some good players in Peake, Mara & Cachia and if they get Arnold back will be there abouts but could also quiet easily start to go backwards with a few key injuries as the depth is not really there to cover it based on the 2's results so far. (Week to week proposition regarding finals…!)

Monash - 4-4
Impressive hard running side which have shown they can mix it with every other team so far this year but at 4-4 they will not be too happy. They have a lot of good kids but rely heavily on their leaders in my opinion, They have some great players in the form of their captain Rutherford and the reliable Wells who has been in great form this season and leads their backline very well. These 2 along with Leeton, who looked like a difficult opponent in the ruck and a few other experienced guys they have, mixed in with plenty of youth they should be there abouts come finals time? May just rely too heavily on those experienced guys a little too much?? (Will be there abouts for finals come Round 18..!)

Powerhouse - 4-4
At 4-4 the jury still out on the House, but they are good enough to make finals still. Anyone who has Edwards in their side will be competitive each week. They do have other quality players such as Sosic & Driessen but they do rely heavily on Edwards. Seem to be going well at home and have been very competitive in all other matches, may have to wait for a few more results to come through from the House before making a decision on their finals hopes (Lets wait and see??...!)

UHS VU - 3-5
Uni High could be the team to watch out for in the 2nd half of the season with the likes of players such as Gorringe in the centre who is their most skilful player and gets the most of the footy for them, Mora who is a handful at half forward is very dangerous & Cracknell who off the half back sets up alot of their play. These guys, along with a good blend of experience and youth and heap of depth to support should put them in good steed for a shot at the finals as some other teams may struggle to cover the losses of key players as the season goes on??? (The sleeping giant so far…..!)

Elsternwick - 2-6
Elsternwick have not had a good start to the season but may well be the team most likely to determine the finals race. At 2-6 they are unlikely to make finals from here but could well decide who does by knocking off a number of the teams fighting for those 2nd, 3rd & 4th spots. Some key players in Hodskiss who is a tough player to man up on and gets alot of the ball, Grace who is by far their most dangerous player and has some of the cleanest hands I've ever seen the way he picked up everything the other week in those terrible conditions & the Mahony brothers who always seem to have one representative in the best players. (Watch out for in the 2nd half of the season to shape the finals….!)

La Trobe - 1-7
La Trobe have been hampered by having a makeshift ground and as always lots players being unavailable here and there. They have some quality players in their coach Sheldrick who sets up alot of their play and has good hands and skills but he can't help them with a broken arm, Staunton obviously seems to be the key for them though with about 24 goals in 4 games and they've been pretty good in those too? Ludeman if he returns would be the other one to look out for, but at 1-7 they are only fighting to avoid relegation each week from here on in. (Relegation battle looming…..!)

Swinburne - 1-7
Similar story to Latrobe here, lost a few older senior players and having to deal with the Uni guys varying commitments each week would be a tough job. Will still be competitive in some matches and could surprise a few teams at home if your not on your game but at 1-7 they are also fighting to hold off relegation. (Relegation battle looming also….!)

Good wrap-up Coach.

White - What do you put down as the reason to the sudden good form of Hawthorn? When Willie played you, you played pretty well, but it only came from a handful of quality players. The fringe players didnt take much of the load. Have you got new players?

First off, it’s actually pretty hard to call hawthorns form ‘sudden’, as the other game we lost apart from willy was to monash, and that was by a solitary point.
As you pointed out however, at the start of the season when we played you there really wasn’t a lot of coherence, and many new players were yet to find their feet. Since then, new players have found confidence, and the team has gelled.
Another factor in the willy game would be that we were missing our B&F fullback, and our 11 times leading goal kicker Dan. Would be interesting to see if the tables were turned next time we played, and you had lost lee to injury? After all he kicked 2/3rds of your score against us.

Might as well point out I’m part of the hawthorn club but have hardly pulled the boots on this season due to injury.

Great wrap up coach.

any news on the gun recruit from wodonga for uni? dominated for the o&m jets last season and even though is a superstar cricketer, has left the game to focus on a footy career. think his surname is kennedy, is he the real deal?
