THE Western Bulldogs have suffered an injury blow, with Daniel Giansiracusa facing six weeks on the sidelines.

Arthrosopic surgery yesterday revealed Giansiracusa suffered cartilage damage in the win against North Melbourne.
A tear was repaired and a piece of floating cartilate removed, ensuring a far longer absence than expected.
Giansiracusa, arguably in the best form of his career, left the ground in the first term on Sunday after the knee joint locked.
After receiving treatment in a lengthy visit to the rooms and going through a series of run-throughs on the boundary to test the knee, Giansiracusa returned to play a key role in the shaking off the Kangaroos.
The 27-year-old kicked two goals in the final term and set up another in a stunning finish to a day that seemed over before quarter-time.
Speaking after the game, Giansiracusa told the Herald Sun: "It will be pretty sore tomorrow".
Giansiracusa would prove to be spot on and scans confirmed he could no longer carry the problem, which has dogged him at times this year.
He narrowly avoided a reconstruction on the same knee in the lead-up to last season, when he tweaked his anterior cruciate ligament.
Although it does not appear the latest setback is related, floating cartilage has caused problems.
"The knee sort of locked and wouldn't go back to normal. It's happened a couple of times during the year," Giansiracusa said after the 22-point win against the Roos.
"The docs worked some magic underneath (the stands) and it was good I could contribute in the end."
After a slow start, Giansiracusa's season had gained considerable momentum.
His ability to find space and finish cleanly on the forward line has been a key factor in the Dogs' good mid-season form.
Now, it appears certain he will have to return three to four weeks before the finals and regain touch and match fitness.

williams has no chance of getting in. If you watched the press conference after the game Eade was scathing of his inability to put consistent performances together and basically guaranteed he wont be seen in the dogs line up within the next month. Reid was really good last week so expect him to come in or maybe TIMMY!

all i can say is...

*UCK!!!!!!!

really enjoyed watching him lately and he has had a huge impact on the scoreboard in assits and goals this year. Makes the game against the Hawks look alot harder

Two things:

1) I haven't heard it confirmed yet, so hopefully he won't miss six weeks. Remember last year when it was reported he would require a knee reconstruction, and only missed a few weeks of the pre-season?

2) I recorded the Williamstown game on Saturday and watched the first half on Sunday morning. When I went to watch the second half earlier, I noticed it has been deleted from IQ... Arghh, I'm scathing. So if anyone has it recorded, can you please send me a PM so I can see what was so impressive about Reid's last quarter?

Thanks.

Towards the end of the article it sugested 3-4 weeks off, and another couple to regain match fitness, so yeah, they might be tempted to play him after 3 weeks as basically a permanent forward for a couple of weeks.

For the Gia knockers out there it will be interesting to see how the forward line functions without his assists.

It also shows how hard he is, reported the knee has been giving him issues all during this season.

He has and continues to be a terrific footballer for the Dogs.

couldnt agree more! You dont know what u got until its gone.. People who knock him dont know what he brings to the table. On the weekend he and eagleton were the only ones using the ball well by foot. And aker's goal from 50 off 1 step on the left wasnt bad either

Shame about Gia but hopefully he's the type of player we can cover. I'm hoping Stack might come in or Okeefe for his first game, however I have a feeling they might try Everitt as a back-up tall for the backline.

Actually just had a thought. The most likely replacement is Callan. He has solid form and could allow Harbrow to slip into midfield/forward role.

****. Oh well, the important thing is getting him primed for the finals. Well Williams spot just opened up, or maybe even Reid

Gia right for the finals? Bulldogs will be lucky to make the finals. Heres why:

They sit 9-4 in third position, right?

Here are the facts:
- They've beaten one team in the top eight as of Round 13.
- They've been smacked by Carlton and West Coast earlier ithis year
- They're run home is: HAW, COLL, ESS, ST K, FRE, WCE, BL, GEE, COLL.

ESS, BL and COLL are very dangerous coming into the last half of the season, WCE have already beaten them and the rest speak for themselves. Worse case scenario is ESS and WCE win (although unlikely) meaning they’ll finish 10-12 and out of the finals. Best case scenario is finishing 12-10 in fifth (provided % doesn't drop).

With Gia out and a tough run home, the Bulldogs are a real possibility of missing the finals. Buckle your seatbelt Bulldog fans, its going to be an unfinished rollercoaster (again).

You missed the bit where we were beaten by Geelong (who will probably just make the bottom four) by a massive 2 POINTS! :D

Back to Bay 13 creature of the dark!

So you have us in 9th then, and Geelong in 8th? After all you did beat us (luckily) by a whopping two points!

After you guys choke again this year, you will go down has the greatest chokers in the History of the AFL. To drop maybe 3-5 games in a 3 year period and only win 1 flag would be great to see. So don't worry your pretty little handbag about us and just figure out how not to choke again

He's right. We won't make the eight now Gian is out. May as well blood young players to prepare for 2010.

On a more serious note, which players must step up in Gian's absence? I think the two most crucial players are Aker and Eagleton. Both are usually pretty good delivering the ball and setting up goals, but not as consistently as Gian does. These two stepping up another level will basically make it appear as though we haven't even lost anything. Make no mistake, it's a fairly massive loss that most other footy fans won't be able to comprehend, but as long as other players step up it's all good.

Don't be throwing that garbage around too freely...remember our lot have won one less flag than them and played in two less grand finals in the same three year period - keep it in perspective. The North Melbourne win didn't inspire confidence, nor does the loss of Giansiracusa. Hawthorn are playing shit but Franklin/Roughead will probably snag 10 between them so everyone needs to lift to ensure they don't get the supply.

The "one game at a time" cliche has never been more apt than now. The next two are an absolute must if the club wants to be seen as "legit".

Based on the VFL game you would think Reid would get a game. But I saw a bigger up side to playing Stack as a Gia type mid size forward.

If Stack does get a game I hope the coaching staff hammer home the importance of not falling over. From the limited times I have seen him play in the VFL he seems to slip over a lot.

Gia going down is disappointing but murph, aker, griffen and to a lesser extent Coony have been well below their best and I have no doubt that at least one of this group will start to turn it on in the coming weeks and more than cover for Gia. These players win matches off their own boot and they have all had a quiet month. Look for them to step up
