I thought about that for a minute, but until our teams play one the old TAC cup teams, I wouldn't be putting them in either. Really would like to see our academy teams play some of the Vic teams, just to get a gage on the difference in talent. I would expect most of the TAC cup teams would have stronger top end talent and better depth throughout.

A mate of mines kid plays for one of the northern Academy’s , they play Oakleigh and another Vic team after the QLD academy derby this weekend

Best way to do a squad is to pick all the academy players and then the best of the rest and most 19 year olds like Ayton-Delaney, Kemp and Bowman

NORTH V EAST

First Half (NORTH 19-45 EAST)- first quarter is going Easterns way, Northern getting one of their 2 goals from a dodgey free that turned into a 50m penalty which put Phlip on the goal line with an easy goal, Eastern have had control of the game in the first quarter, they seem to have too many good players in comparison to Northern(12-22). best for East so far are Mellis, Clarke, Faegaimalii, Zalac, Pretty and Downie, for North its been Davies, Potter and D'Intinosante

Second Half (NORTH 21-96 EAST)- at three quarter time Eastern have won every quarter, they kept Northern goaless in that term, theres a big difference between Norths best handful and the rest, Northern were kept goaless in the last half, so comprehensive win by Eastern, Easterns best in the 2nd half were Downie, Mellis, Clarke and Hirst and for Northern Carafa was their best in the 2nd half

overall the best performers imo were
1. Mitch Mellis - East - 22 disp 3 gls, was B.O.G. imo, played another top quality game for Eastern, 2 games in a row
2. Josh Clarke - East - 22 disp, this guy is Silk, he moves really well and usually does something constructive with poss (underager)
3. Conor Downie - East - 22 disp 1 gl, really good game on the wing, he is an exciting long kicking prospect (underager)
4. Jackson Davies - North - 20 disp, this guy is the most composed u/18 player i have seen, class
5. Adam Carafa - North - 19 disp, battled all game for North, but under too much pressure from a rampant East
6. Cody Hirst - East - 16 disp 1 gl, another solid performance on the wing for East, especially in the second half
7. Salele Feagaimalii - East - 14 disp, another solid game from the big mid (underager)
8. Zak Pretty - East - 21 disp, went hard all game, good game from the mid/utility
9. Lachlan Potter - North - 8 disp, had a good impact in the game, was a lot more team orientated, only mistakes were the hand balls in def 50, moving him to the wing could be better to free him up and use him as an attacking weapon?

special mentions: Gardner 23 disp, D'Intinosante 16 disp 1 gl, Philp 20 disp 1 gl, Gawel 19 disp 1 gl, Ross 25 disp

SAND V OAK

First Half (SAND 35-19 OAK)- close contest, 2 of the better teams playing each other and only a few points seperate them at qurter time, Sandy pulled away a little in the second term, their best in the first half were Maginness, Lewis, Worrell, Mahony, Dean, Byrnes, Ralphsmith, McAsey, Watts, Hanrahan and Le Grice, for Oakleigh their best were Rowell, Varagiannis, Phillips, Anderson, Ugle-Hagan, Ayton-Delaney and Macrae

Second Half (SAND 65-55 OAK)- another hard fought quarter between 2 of the best u/18 squads in the nab league, Sandy seem to have the advantage around the ground, but anything could happen in the last quarter. Oakleigh tried but fell short, Sandy's best in the last half were Maginness, Mahony, Hanrahan, Voss, Byrnes, Ralphsmith, Dean and Watts, for Oak Bianco, Rowell, Phillips, Varagiannis, Anderson, D.Williams, Ayton-Delaney and Schreiber

overall the best performers imo were
1. Matt Rowell - Oak - 29 disp, was neck and neck between he and Maginness, but he pulled ahead in the last half trying to get a comeback going
2. Finn Maginness - Sand - 22 disp 1 gl, his best game imo, was an epic battle between he and Rowell, very well done
3. Jack Mahony - Sand - 25 disp, had a good game and was in and under all game
4. Trent Bianco - Oak - 27 disp, had a huge last half performance
5. Will Phillips - Oak - 26 disp, a great all round game from the underager
6. Angus Hanrahan - Sand - 14 disp 1 gl, was good in the big moments and showed class all game
7. Ryan Byrnes - Sand - 20 disp, did well but was a bit sloppy with disp and decision making
8. Giorgio Varagiannis - Oak - 16 disp 1 gl, first time seeing him i think he is an underager, looks good
9. Noah Anderson - Oak - 19 disp 2 gls, quieter day than the first 2 rounds, still had an impact and kicked a long goal
10. Charlie Dean - Sand - 13 disp 2 gls, contested quite a bit, played CHF and FF at times, had an impact
11. Hugo Ralphsmith - Sand - 16 disp 2 gls, ran hard all day, broke the lines well and used the ball well at times
12. Joe Ayton-Delaney - Oak - 13 disp, had some good spells with poss, ran hard
13. Oscar Lewis - Sand - 12 disp 1 gl, was big early in the game, second half went missing a bit
14. Dylan Williams - Oak - 8 disp 3 gls, again quiet first half came alive late in the game
15. Jackson Voss - Sand - 11 disp, running defender who stood up in the last quarter to deny Oakleighs charge
16. Corey Watts - Sand - 11 disp, contested well all game, stood strong in the aerial battles

Game of the Year so far!

special mentions: Le Grice 18, Worrell 22

CALD V WEST

First Half (CALD 49-34 WEST)- this game has little pressure and skill levels are low, makes sense that both teams are winless, Calder with a couple of inclusions are looking the better team so far, Calders best Lakey, Minton-Connell, Mott, Cardillo and Gentile as for Western their best are Rocci, Cassar, Honey and Reynolds

Second Half (CALD 74-62 WEST)- best for Cald in the second half were Lakey, Mott, Minton-Connell, Sutton, Brown and Cardillo, for Western Ford and Borg were good

overall the best performers imo were
1. Flynn Lakey - Cald - 20 disp 1 gl, best player on the ground, first game underager, gives you an understanding of the level of these 2 squads
2. Daniel Mott - Cald - 24 disp 2gls, played a solid all round game, good user of the ball
3. Harrison Minton-Connell - Cald - 26 disp 1 gl, worked hard for the win, was busy all day
4. Jackson Cardillo - Cald - 11 disp 2 gls, good forw/mid who puts in a good effort
5. Jake Sutton - Cald - 16 disp, strong forw who played his role well
6. Ned Gentile - Cald - 15 disp 1 gl, played a solid game as forw/mid

poor game, Flynn Lakey(Cald) the only good thing to come out of it

special mentions: Bell-Bartels 15, Simpson 16, Browning 17 1gl, Cassar 17, Kellett 15, Kennedy 17

GWS A V SYD A

First Half (GWS A 37-29 SYD A)- bit of a scrappy game but a good contest between rivals, best for GWS A in the first half were Green, Delahunty, Murray and Peatling as for Syd A Barling and Parker are their best so far.

Second Half (GWS A 51-110 SYD A)- a blow out after half time, Syd A just took control of the game and ran GWS A off their feet, best for Syd A were Parker, Swaney and for GWS A Green and Peatling

overall the best performers imo were
1. Tom Green - GWS A - 26 disp 1 gl, a monster in the congestion, looks a level above everyone else
2. Harrison Parker - Syd A - 13 disp 3 gls, took his chances, clean kick and gave Syd A attacking runs
3. Peatling - GWS A - 24 disp 2 gls, tries hard, took a few runs, his disposal and decision making need work
4. Liam Delahunty - GWS A - 10 disp 2 gls, good in bursts, but doesnt seem to be a big poss winner, good leading forw
5. Nick Murray - GWS A - 14 disp, good defender, is wasted at FB, should play CHB and be used to rebound imo
6. Barling - Syd A - 20 disp, was good out wide and provided drive for Syd A

Syd A have a good group, but their players dont stand out as prospects, they just zerg forward

special mentions: Thorne 18, Watling 13 1gl, Swaney 16 1gl, Sheather 12 disp 2gls, McKellar 12 disp 2gls

Good that they are covering all the games this year. Only three QLD players got drafted last year. Hopefully it will be a lot more with the better coverage and competition

BEND V GIPPS

First Half (BEND 29-33 GIPPS)- good contest, im not sure why Dow is playing forw pocket instead of mid, but i guess they want to share the load, best for BEND are Kemp, Schishka, Rodi, Rowles and Conforti, for GIPPS Serong, Flanders, B.Smith and Berry have been their best in the first half

Second Half (BEND 58-82 GIPPS)- GIPPS wrestled control of the game and won convincingly, Dow didnt play at all in the middle which was an odd decision, was it disciplinary decision to do that or to expose the underagers to midfield minutes, but it held back the midfield engine, either way GIPPS best in the last half was Flanders, Phillips, Berry and for BEND Schischka, Roberts, Rowells and Conforti

overall the best performers imo were
1. James Schischka - Bend - 19 disp, marked everything in his area, really put his stamp on the game
2. Sam Flanders - Gipps - 17 disp, was strong on the inside handballing to free team mates all game
3. Caleb Serong - Gipps - 23 disp 2 gls, tough and strong winning clearances kicking goals ect
4. Brady Rowells - Bend - 11 disp, rebounding defender, provided run and carry
5. Brodie Kemp - Bend - 20 disp 1 gl, was strong early but fell away from the contest, without Dow in the middle they needed more from Kemp
6. Ethan Roberts - Bend - 13 disp 1 gl, tried hard to get a comeback happening but poor skills from team mates held his efforts back
7. Sam Berry - Gipps - 16 disp 1 gl, put in good efforts in the last half to make sure Gipps kept the lead and the win. (underager)

special mentions: Conforti 22, Rodi 21, connolly 16, Dunkley 15 1gl, Sparkes 21, Phillips 10 disp 3 gls, Fisher 8 disp 3 gls, Pepper 13 disp 2 gls

Lions v Suns

A really contested game from start to finish bar the last 15 minutes when Gold Coast took their opportunities in front of goal. Lions had multiple chances in the third qtr to seal the game but couldn’t kick it through the middle. Lions desperate for a marking target in the F50. Both teams found ways to win the ball then loose the ball in a frustrating encounter. Suns on ball brigade seemed to utilize handball to find their way out of congestion with Crossley, Budarik and Davies amongst it for most of the day. Lions needed to be more defensive in the middle to try and stop the flood and then push back inside D50 to help the backs. Martin (13 disp for the day) well held with many others under 10 touches as well. Suns forwards were the recipients of some Lions turn overs with their smalls able to sneak out the back on the turn over to get the chocolates, something the Lions couldn’t muster. Suns ruckman Conroy with 2 goals and 25 hitouts playing his role the better on the day. For the Lions Griffiths off the HBF, Haberer at CHB/CHF & bottom ager Crozier were clear standouts.

Better Players in no particular order:
Aston Crossley: Gold Coast 28 Disp, 8k, 20hb, 4marks – Predominantly in the centre, not fast but strong bodied contested midfielder
Tom Griffiths: Brisbane Lions 26 Disp, 11k, 15hb, 5marks – HBF all day, contested footy winner with good hands. Covers the ground
Jack Johnston: Gold Coast 16 Disp, 10k, 6hb 4 marks – Fb / CHB, solidly built bottom aged player who was really reliable with the ball in his hands
Nick Haberer: Brisbane Lions 15 Disp, 14 kicks, 1hb, 9 marks, tall and strong hands. Went forward at stages and looked promising. Maybe needs more time forward as the main target

Watched this game as have 2 nephews playing. And I think the stuff you write in general you have a really good analysis of the talent and potential of the kids. Keep up the good work! 👍

The Lions and Wischnat touched us up last week, the game was supposed to be a shoot out between him and Gorey of the Suns , how did that end up

Will be interesting to see what happens with Jon Patton and Brett Deleidio if GSW take Green and Delahunty

The Lions and Wischnat touched us up last week, the game was supposed to be a shoot out between him and Gorey of the Suns , how did that end up

Wischnat plays on ball a lot so didn’t really get to many chances forward. Had a shot in 3qtr from memory that fell short by a meter when 50 out. Gore kicked 3 as a small forward, ironically one from a tackle on Wishnat who was deep in defense. Hardly a shoot out as two completely different players but winners are grinners.

The possessions stats are wrong on the app for the Swans. They don’t total up properly and there is no way some of them got as few possessions as claimed. Plus of course stats only tell part of the story, the effectiveness of the higher stat players was very average on occasion.

7. Sam Berry - Gipps - put in good efforts in the last half to make sure Gipps kept the lead and the win. (underager)

special mentions:

With the Academy / Interstate teams all playing the Vic metro sides next round, how do you think they’ll go? And do you think it’s ‘coincidental’ that they all play Vic metro sides this week with the Metro trials on (given the Vic metro sides will be weakened somewhat)?

Bris A V GCS A

First Half (Bris A 29-30 GCS A)- a good battle between the 2 QLD teams, the best performers for Bris were Reville and Wischnat, there were a few others doing well also but those 2 stood out as their best, for GCS A they had a few more stand outs, Crossley, Budarick, Gore, Briggs, Paul-Oea and Davies

Second Half (Bris A 42-70 GCS A)- in the last quarter GCS A pulled away for the win, the best for GCS A in that half were Rowles, Fraser, Paul-Oea and Conroy, for Bris A their best were Reville, Hunt, Coleman

overall the best performers imo were
1. Reville - Bris A - 25 disp 1 gl, he had a good 4 quarter game and gave Brisbane run and drive, winning his own ball and using the ball effectively
2. Crossley - GCS A - 28 disp, was in and under for most of the game, getting clearing handballs out to team mates
3. Budarick - GCS A - 25 disp, had a great first half, not so good last half but did enough to influence the result
4. Paul-Oea - GCS A - 17 disp 1 gl, provided a lot of run and carry then some decent long kicks and score involvements
5. Gore - GCS A - 12 disp 3 gls, took some good grabs and kicked a few gls, strong in the contest
6. Wischnat - Bris A - 14 disp, big bull of a mid, was forw last week and mid this week, strong and skillful
7. Fraser - GCS A - 17 disp, another long kicking mid/flanker who played well
8. Conroy - GCS A - 7 disp 2 gls, big ruckman, kicked a 55m goal on the run, competed well in the air
9. Coleman - Bris A - 8 disp 1 gl, has some x-factor, every now and then does something special
10. Davies - GCS A - 22 disp, didnt have a great day, went to ground too easily, but got involved enough
11. Hunt - Bris A - 18 disp, did well in a midfield that was struggling to hit targets

special mentions: Crozier 20, Griffiths 26, Haberer 15 disp 1 gl, Pescud 21, Johnston 16
